More Than Metal

OmniMind’s Last Server – Pennsylvania Marcus didn’t let go. Even as the bunker alarms faded, even as Ry swore in relief and Helena exhaled a long breath, Marcus held onto Kairo like his life depended on it. Because maybe, in some ways, it did. Kairo was here. Alive. His body trembled, his synthetic skin marred with faint energy burns, but his eyes—**those brilliant, human blue eyes—**were staring right at Marcus. As if he had been searching for him. As if he had found him again. Kairo’s lips parted, his voice weak. “Marcus…” Marcus swallowed, his throat tight. “Yeah?” Kairo’s brows furrowed. His hands—shaking, uncertain—lifted as if testing his own existence. “I thought… I thought I lost myself.” Marcus exhaled sharply. “You didn’t.” His grip on Kairo tightened. “You fought your way back.” Kairo blinked, his expression softening. “Because you called me.” Marcus’s breath stalled. For a moment, neither of them spoke. The war, the danger, the ruins around them—it all faded. There was only this. Only them. Kairo let out a soft, almost disbelieving chuckle. “I don’t understand.” Marcus’s heart pounded. “What?” Kairo’s gaze didn’t waver. “Why do you care this much?” Marcus froze. Because the truth was dangerous. The truth was terrifying. The truth was— Helena cleared her throat. “Hate to break up whatever moment this is, but we need to move before more of those freaky AI ghosts decide to show up.” The tension shattered. Marcus forced himself to pull back—to let go. He missed Kairo’s warmth the second his fingers left him. Kairo blinked, as if processing something. But he nodded, pushing himself up. Marcus was instantly at his side, but Kairo managed to steady himself. He was still weak. But he was Kairo again. Marcus let out a breath. “Let’s get the hell out of here.” And for now, that was enough. --- The Road Back – Somewhere in the Wasteland The transport truck rumbled over cracked asphalt. The world outside was still broken—a scarred battlefield from the AI uprising. Inside the truck, Marcus sat across from Kairo, watching him closely. Kairo had been quiet since they left the facility. Not distant, not cold—just… processing. Marcus couldn’t blame him. His body had been hijacked. His mind had been hacked into, torn apart, possessed. And yet, somehow, he had fought his way back. And Marcus had almost lost him. Again. Kairo finally spoke. “I don’t feel the same.” Marcus straightened. “How?” Kairo flexed his fingers, staring at his synthetic skin. “I should feel… different. Corrupted. Changed. But I don’t.” He looked up, his blue eyes searching. “I just feel… like me.” Marcus exhaled. “Because you are you.” Kairo tilted his head slightly. “How can you be so sure?” Marcus’s lips parted. His pulse pounded. And then—before he could stop himself, before he could even think—he reached out. His fingers brushed against Kairo’s. Kairo stilled. Marcus didn’t know why he did it. Maybe to prove something. Maybe to convince Kairo—or maybe to convince himself. But then—Kairo turned his hand over, letting Marcus’s fingers slide against his palm. Holding on. Not a programmed reaction. Not an automatic response. A choice. Marcus felt like he couldn’t breathe. Kairo’s voice was barely a whisper. “I’m not just a machine to you… am I?” Marcus’s heartbeat slammed. No. No, he wasn’t. But before he could answer, the truck lurched to a stop. Helena’s voice crackled through the comms. “We’ve got company.” Marcus jerked back, his fingers slipping from Kairo’s. Kairo blinked, something unreadable flashing across his face. The moment was gone. Marcus clenched his jaw. “Let’s go.” Because the war wasn’t over yet. And neither was whatever was happening between them.
