Chapter Three — The Sacrifice
I turned around slowly, and my heart stopped.
He was standing right behind me.
His eyes were glowing in the darkness, and for a moment, I couldn’t move. I knew what he was. I had seen those eyes before. I had seen them the night my brother died.
A werewolf.
He reached for my arm, but I quickly pulled away.
“Don’t touch me.”
He stared at me for a few seconds before a small, arrogant smile appeared on his face.
“Humans are always so loud.”
My father immediately stepped forward, raising the gun he had been holding.
“Stay away from my daughter.”
The werewolf looked at him and laughed.
“You really think that little thing can stop me?”
Before my father could even respond, the werewolf moved so fast that I barely saw him. He grabbed my father and threw him against the wall.
“Dad!”
My mother screamed as my father fell to the floor. I rushed toward him, but another werewolf suddenly came through the broken window and kicked him before I could reach him.
“Stop!”
I tried to get to my father, but the first werewolf grabbed me and pulled me back.
My mother ran toward Dad, but another werewolf caught her before she could reach him.
“Let them go!”
None of them listened.
I looked around the room, desperately trying to understand what they wanted. There were three of them now, and all of them looked completely unbothered by the fear they were causing.
Then one of them looked toward Mia.
“We’re not here for you.”
My heart dropped.
He pointed at my sister.
“We’re here for the girl.”
“No.”
The word came out before I even had time to think.
Mia stepped back, her face filled with fear.
“Brie…”
I moved in front of her.
“You’re not taking her.”
The arrogant werewolf tilted his head.
“Move.”
“No.”
His expression changed.
“I said move.”
“And I said no.”
He took a step toward me, and I could feel the anger coming off him.
“You really don’t know when to stop talking.”
“I don’t care.”
He grabbed me by the arm again, but I fought against him.
“Take your hands off me!”
My father suddenly pushed himself off the floor.
“Leave my daughters alone!”
He tried to attack the werewolf, but he was too weak. The werewolf punched him across the face, sending him back to the floor.
“Dad!”
He punched him again.
And again.
My mother screamed, begging them to stop, but they didn’t care.
I watched helplessly as my father struggled to protect himself. Blood was running down the side of his face, and he could barely stand anymore.
“Please, stop!”
Another punch landed.
Something inside me broke.
I couldn’t watch him die too.
“Stop!”
The werewolf paused and looked at me.
I was shaking so badly that I could barely stand, but I forced myself to look at him.
“Take me instead.”
Everyone went silent.
My mother stared at me in horror.
“Brie, no.”
I swallowed hard and looked at my father. He was still breathing, but barely.
“Just leave him alone.”
The werewolf stared at me.
“You?”
“Yes.”
He glanced toward Mia.
“We came for her.”
“I know.”
I stepped forward.
“But you can take me instead.”
“Brie, don’t do this!” Mia cried.
I looked at her, trying to keep myself from breaking down.
“You’re my little sister. I’m not going to let them take you.”
The werewolf walked toward me slowly.
“And why would we agree to that?”
“Because if you keep hurting my father, you’re going to kill him.”
He looked at my father, then back at me.
For a few seconds, nobody said anything.
Finally, he gave a small nod.
“Fine.”
My heart sank.
“But she comes with us.”
My mother started crying.
“No, please. Take me instead.”
I shook my head.
“Mom, please.”
I walked over to her and hugged her tightly.
“I love you.”
She held onto me like she was afraid that if she let go, I would disappear forever.
“I love you too.”
When I pulled away, I looked at Mia.
She was crying.
“Take care of them for me.”
She shook her head.
“No, Brie. Please don’t go.”
I forced a smile even though I was terrified.
“Everything is going to be okay.”
I didn’t believe those words myself, but I needed her to.
The werewolf grabbed my arm.
I turned back one last time and looked at my family.
My father was still on the floor. My mother was crying beside him, and Mia was staring at me like she was trying to memorize my face.
Then I was pulled outside.
The cold night air hit my face, and I immediately realized how alone I was.
Three werewolves surrounded me as they walked me toward a black car parked a short distance from our house.
I looked back at my home.
I didn’t know if I would ever see it again.
I didn’t know if my family would be safe without me.
And I didn’t know if I was ever coming back.
“Where are you taking me?”
The arrogant werewolf opened the car door.
“You ask too many questions.”
I glared at him.
“And you talk too much.”
He stared at me for a moment before grabbing a black cloth.
“What are you doing?”
“You don’t need to know.”
He covered my eyes with the cloth, tying it tightly behind my head.
My heart started pounding.
I couldn’t see anything anymore.
I heard the car door open, and a second later, I was pushed inside.
I tried to remember every turn, every sound, every movement, but after a while, I couldn’t tell which direction we were going.
All I could think about was my family.
Was my father still alive?
Was my mother okay?
Was Mia safe?
I pressed my hands together, trying to stop them from shaking.
I had given myself up to save my sister.
But now that I was sitting in that car, blindfolded and surrounded by werewolves, I couldn’t stop the fear from taking over.
I had no idea where they were taking me.
And for the first time in my life, I realized that I was completely powerless.
I was no longer in control of my life.
