I stood in front of Nicholas's door; it took more than heart to do this. I was breathing out venom just by standing here.
"Rich kids and their whimper; what could have been his medical condition? He seems fine by me," I muttered under by breath.
I couldn't imagine why a grown adult would request a nanny when he was not a vegetable. I settled my thoughts, took one breath at a time, before finally knocking on the door.
"Good morning, M..Mr. Nicholas; I have come for your morning routine," I said just like Madam Lyra Grayson, Nicholas's stepmother had instructed.
"Make sure he takes his medication, always have him eat his breakfast, he only eats in his room. Do not talk too much; only talk when he asks you."
The instructions went on and on; she made sure to bore me with her unending list of what's what and what's not.
After waiting for a response, silent echoed back to me. My curiosity piqued, I stretched my hand to open the door, and the knob twisted open easily. I took a breath and peaked into the vast and immaculate bedroom, but no figure was present.
I instantly stepped in, taking in the beauty of the space.
"Nicholas Grayson, I finally entered your bedroom?" I hummed under my breath. I was bullied by him in high school after he overheard me saying I'd do anything just to touch the bed that hugged him every night. My embarrassment was all over the school like a wild fire, he made me ever regret falling for him back then.
Just that moment, I came across a brown parchment, I became curious. I knew it was wrong to ransack through people's things but my hands were itching, I picked it up and slid my hand in, I dragged the item out, it was some white documents containing Nicholas's medical diagnosis.
My eyes went wide with shock as I took in the unexpected sight before me. Nicholas was suffering from Huntington's Disease and Systemic Lupus Erythematosus, and he had also been diagnosed with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.
"Wha...what!" I exclaimed in disbelief.
Before I could gather my thoughts, the knob of the door twisted open. My heart jumped from its cage as the documents scattered on the floor. I couldn't turn; the fear wouldn't let me. I could feel his eyes piercing through the back of my head. I asked the ground to swallow me whole again and again.
"What are you doing touching my things?" came his voice.
I was sure he should have been angry, but his calm voice threw me into another delirious situation. I turned around slowly, staring back at him as he sat quietly on the bed.
"Do you want me to repeat myself?" he howled this time. I jerked back to reality. I knew he would never change, Nicholas, the most feared scumbag of Hamilton's high school.
I didn't reply; I instead bent down and started picking up the documents.
He snapped, dragging me forcefully towards the wall as he placed me in a difficult trap, his face an inch away from my shocked face.
I could see that anger he usually directed at his victims, that including me back then.
"Why were you rummaging through my things, you hag?" he spat.
My eyes locked onto his in rage; did he just call me a hag? I wasn't about to let that slide. I pushed him hard, causing him to stumble back multiple times before he was able to gain his composure, anger burning within me.
"Did you just call me a hag, you dickhead? I guess you think so highly of yourself that you wreck of polluted empathy. You son of a gun, I hate your guts, here I was trying to reason with a shithead for all your past mistakes, but you turned out to be far from redemption."
I said it...yes..I finally said it; all my pent-up and compressed anger was let loose. I stormed out in annoyance, but as I was leaving, I couldn't help but notice the creepy smile on his face.
The calm breeze alluring from the garden aided my burning anger as it suppressed it. I soon realized I shouldn't have said all that.
"Ugh! Ella, you and your mouth," I blamed myself, but seeing the face of my past bully triggered me.
Just then, Mira, one of the maids walked over to me with her watering can, she was watering the flowers when she saw me.
"You are the new girl chosen by Mr. Nicholas right? You're such a lucky girl. Many of the maids here could kill to serve him, but he specifically chose you. It was his semi-birthday present from his stepmother, so I heard," she said, smiling.
My anger built up again; what was so funny? My hands twitched as I clenched my fists until my knuckles turned white. The anger I was trying to suppress erupted once more.
Mira, who was oblivious to my dilemma, continued with her blabber. I squeezed my knuckles countless times to compress my anger as she spoke about how I was the lucky girl in the whole world. No one actually knew Nicholas, the bully who specifically chose me as his target during high school, and now he still had his strings tied to me, pulling me in every direction he chooses.
"Did you know, despite the trauma he endured after his mother's death, he was strong enough to pull through? That's more reason why every maid wants to love and serve him, unlike his half-brother, Liam, who has always bullied him right from when he was a kid."
I froze in an instant; he had been bullied too, which explained his Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. I didn't know that about him; no one in high school knew about this.
"How bad is Mr. Liam towards him?" I asked curiously, as I really wanted to know the extent of his cruelty toward Nicholas.
Mira suspiciously looked around for anyone in sight, before moving closer to me and whispering.
"I heard he strangled Mrs.Rinnah!"
I hopelessly walked back toward Nicholas's door; my head was screaming with so many things.
I wanted to feel sorry for him; I wanted to strangled him. I longed to wrap my hands around him and pat his back, telling him he had done a great job facing his problems. The other part of me wanted to cut him into millions of pieces.
I was already standing in front of his door once more, and I slowly knocked on the door.
"Who the heck is that?" he growled.
I was supposed to be mad, but some how I didn't. I was already numb from what Mira had told me. I slowly opened the door and walked in.
Nicholas's eyes darted at me like daggers.
"You..you have the nerve to show your ugly face again? After all that scrappy show you displayed, kneel down and apologize to me right now, else you will hate what I will do to you," he commanded.
Nicholas was cold and aloof just like before. He was hoping to see me whine and yell; it was as if he loved the sight of my struggle. But I didn't resist; I obediently knelt down before him. Nicholas looked at me stunned, but he wasn't fazed.
"You will do this everyday for the next week. Failure to comply, and I will make you remember every pain you suffered in high school," he muttered before shifting his weight to the other side of the bed.
I really felt like yelling my lungs out at him but I just couldn't. My mind was filled with something huge. I wouldn't have lived if I had seen the face of the person who killed my mother and made me witness it; that was cruel.
"Will the medicine bring itself?" Nicholas lashed out again. I quickly pulled myself together and stood up.
Once he had taken his medication and eaten his meal, he asked to be left alone since he wanted to take his nap.
I left and came back to the spot where I found Mira, but she was already gone.
I spent the rest of my day reminiscing about what Mira had told me.
"Mr. Liam asked to meet you." I was startled; I looked up to see a maid staring me down where I was sitting on the balcony.
