Chapter 36 The cool, clear weather the next day let McDuff enjoy being outside again, with the air in the city almost clean for the first time in longer than he could remember. The fresh interlude would be short, with countless coal and wood fires starting up against the oncoming cold. More people walking than usual obviously agreed with him that they all had to enjoy the fresh air while it lasted. He slowed as he approached Father Hall’s church, wondering at how it ever could have looked threatening to him.
