Just as Victoria expected and dreaded, Bertrand leapt at the idea of taking her to the theatre, as did her mother. Her father pulled her aside the day before to make sure Inspector McDuff would be close by at all times.
Once she solemnly reassured him that Inspector McDuff had kept all of his arrangements with her, he approved of the idea as well.
It was, after all, her first actual date with her soon-to-be husband.
Excitement was to be expected.
Mrs. Haversham picked out a sapphire blue gown to accent Victoria’s eyes, with a lower-cut front than she was used to. With so much of her energy directed toward much darker matters, Victoria agreed without argument. Sparkling accents for her hair, fingers, and a large gemstone necklace soon followed.
