Chapter 21 McDuff walked as fast as he could without breaking into a run in the unusual afternoon heat. He was convinced the yellow and red brick buildings reflected the sun back on these narrow streets, leaving no hope of relief until nightfall. A nearly shoulder-to-shoulder crowd stretched as far as he could see in every direction. If only the fancy new underground trains came out this far, he would retreat from the pandemonium at once. An overturned delivery wagon full of chickens had turned this whole side of London into a nightmare of stopped carriages, trapped horses, and shouting drivers, so escaping into a hansom cab was impossible.
