Chapter 23 McDuff counted five of his own breaths before he opened his eyes. Victoria watched him, hands folded in her lap, the perfect image of calm. He nodded. “I’d first have to arrange for his transfer,” she said. “Out of Fodelson Prison into an asylum.” Father Hall leaned forward, his pale eyebrows drawn together. “Please, Father,” McDuff said. “Let her speak.” “An asylum where I could influence his treatment,” Victoria continued. “He won’t be left to experiments and torture. He also won’t be in danger of being picked up on the street or falling into worse company than he kept before. He’s your brother, he must hold you in some sort of esteem.
