Crossed Lines

Lena barely slept. Every sound, the hum of the air conditioner, footsteps in the hallway, even her own breathing kept her on edge. When morning finally came, it didn’t bring relief. It only made everything feel more exposed. She sat on the edge of the bed, hugging her knees, staring at the door as though it might open on its own. "When the details come, don’t hesitate". The message was replayed in her mind like a warning she didn’t fully understand. Her phone buzzed. She startled, grabbing it instantly. A new email. Her heart skipped violently as she opened it. FLIGHT DETAILS– Confidential Her breath hitched. It was real. The departure date was soon. Too soon. Less than forty-eight hours away. Her hands shook as she scrolled. Boarding time, destination, instructions. Everything was precise. Clean. Cold. No sender name. No contact person. Just one line at the bottom: Be ready. Someone will guide you when the time comes. Lena dropped the phone onto the bed. Guide her? Guide her where? A knock sounded at the door. Her heart slammed. She didn’t move. Another knock. Firmer, calmer. “Lena,” a male voice said quietly. “It’s me.” Daniel. Relief crashed over her so hard her eyes burned. She rushed to the door, hesitated for a brief second, then unlocked it and pulled it open. He stood there looking exhausted, his jaw tense, his eyes dark with something she couldn’t name. “You shouldn’t have stayed here,” he said immediately. Her chest tightened. “You knew?” “Yes.” His voice was low. “From the moment you walked into this hotel.” Fear crept back into her spine. “Then why didn’t you say anything?” “Because I wasn’t supposed to,” he replied. The words landed heavily between them. “What do you mean you weren’t supposed to?” she asked. Daniel stepped inside and closed the door behind him, locking it. “I was meant to observe. Nothing more.” “Observe me?” Her voice shook. “Like I’m some experiment?” “No.” His expression hardened. “Like someone whose life was already being watched long before I met you.” Lena felt dizzy. “By who?” Daniel hesitated. That hesitation told her everything. “Say it,” she whispered. “Please.” “There are people,” he began carefully, “who don’t like interference. People who plan things far in advance. “Who doesn’t like unpredictability. People who start paying attention when something changes.” Lena’s chest tightened. “Changes like what?” Daniel hesitated. “Like someone suddenly preparing to leave. Like someone becoming harder to reach.” Her stomach dropped. “But I got the email before I met you.” “Yes,” he said softly. “And that’s the problem.” Her breath came in shallow gasps. “Then why help me? Why pick me up that night?” Daniel looked at her, really looked at her, and something unguarded flickered in his eyes. “Because you were in danger,” he said. “And because I crossed the line the moment I opened that car door.” Silence fell. Lena sank onto the bed slowly, her world tilting. “So what happens now?” Daniel’s phone buzzed in his pocket. He glanced at it and swore under his breath. “Now,” he said grimly, “they know I’m too close.” Her phone vibrated at the same time. She didn’t want to look. But she did. Unknown Number: This is your last chance to follow instructions. Her throat tightened. “Daniel…” He met her eyes. “Whatever decision you make next will change everything.” She looked down at the flight details on her phone. Escape. Or obedience. Her hands curled into fists. “I won’t be controlled,” she said quietly. Daniel nodded once. “Then we need to move fast.” Outside, somewhere unseen, a car engine started. And for the first time, Lena understood something with terrifying clarity: Running away might no longer be an option. The sound of tyres screeching faintly outside made Lena’s heart leap into her throat. Daniel moved instantly, crossing the room and peering through the curtain just enough to see without being seen. His shoulders stiffened. “They’re closer than I thought,” he murmured. Lena stood slowly, her legs unsteady. “Are they here for me?” Daniel turned to her, his expression unreadable. “They’re here because of a choice you haven’t made yet.” Her phone buzzed again. She didn’t want to look. She already knew who it was. Unknown Number: Step outside. Her breath caught. “No,” she whispered. “I won’t.” Another message came immediately. Unknown Number: Then someone else will. A cold dread settled in her stomach. Daniel’s phone vibrated next, and when he looked at the screen, the colour drained from his face. “What is it?” Lena asked. “They’ve activated the fallback,” he said quietly. Her chest tightened. “What does that mean?” “It means,” he replied, locking eyes with her, “they’re done waiting.” A knock echoed through the hallway. Not at her door. Not yet. But close enough. Lena’s pulse thundered as the sound of footsteps approached slowly, deliberately, one step at a time. Daniel positioned himself between her and the door. “Whatever happens next,” he said under his breath, “you don’t open it unless I tell you to.” The footsteps stopped. Right outside. The handle turned. And this time… It didn’t stop.
