Lena’s fingers trembled as she adjusted the thin hotel curtain, peering through the small window.
The street below was quiet, almost unnaturally so. Cars passed occasionally, but there was no sign of anyone paying attention to her. Yet, the feeling of being watched refused to leave her.
Her heartbeat raced, the memory of the knocks from yesterday still raw in her mind. She took a deep breath, trying to steady herself, but it barely worked. The soft hum of the air conditioner did little to mask the tension that pressed down on her chest. She felt exposed, small, and alone.
For the first time since leaving her apartment, Lena wondered if leaving had been a mistake.
Her phone buzzed again, and she flinched.
Unknown Number: "You shouldn’t be here".
Her throat went dry. Who was this person? How did they even know where she was staying? Her eyes darted across the room, as if the walls themselves could answer her question.
“I’m not safe anywhere,” she whispered, clutching the phone to her chest.
Shaking off the fear, she decided to leave the room for a moment, if only to calm her thoughts. Maybe a short walk to the lobby or the dining area would help. She locked the door behind her and stepped into the quiet hallway.
The carpet muffled her footsteps, but it didn’t stop the sensation that someone or something was following her.
Every shadow seemed to twitch.
Every distant sound made her flinch.
She could feel it before she even saw it, the presence of someone close.
Meanwhile, outside, Daniel sat in his car, eyes sharp and calculating. He noticed movement across the street, a fleeting shadow.
Someone was watching Lena.
Someone who was supposed to only observe, not interfere.
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
His grip on the steering wheel was firm.
This wasn’t part of the plan.
He had only meant to keep an eye on her, ensure her safety. But now… things were escalating.
He exhaled slowly, trying to keep calm.
Back inside, Lena reached the small hotel dining area. She sank into a chair near the corner, hoping the vantage point would make her feel safer.
She picked the plate of breakfast the hotel had sent up, but her mind wasn’t on food.
Her eyes flicked constantly toward the entrance.
Then she saw a shadow move in the hallway outside the dining area.
Quick.
Deliberate.
Just beyond the line of sight, a figure lurked.
Lena froze.
Her fork clattered softly on the plate.
The footsteps stopped.
Her breath hitched.
She didn’t dare move.
Her phone buzzed again.
Unknown Number: If you move too fast, you’ll regret it.
Lena’s hands shook as she gripped her chair. She wanted to run, to escape, to call Daniel, but she didn’t know how. She wasn’t sure who this watcher was.
And now, they were closer than ever.
A low creak echoed from the far end of the hallway. Slowly… deliberately… the hotel door at the end of the corridor opened. Lena’s heart thudded in her chest, each beat a drum of panic.
She could see the edge of a shadow move into the dim light.
And then… silence.
Her eyes darted to the entrance, to the empty hallway, to the shadow that had vanished as quickly as it had appeared.
But Lena knew.
She was not alone.
Someone was inside the hotel with her.
Watching.
Waiting.
And as she clutched her phone and sank low in her chair, Daniel’s car engine rumbled faintly outside, unnoticed by Lena. His eyes narrowed, realising that the watcher wasn’t just observing, they were testing boundaries, and tonight, something was about to happen.
The 48 hours had already begun.
And Lena had no idea that the real danger had just stepped through the hotel doors.
A floorboard creaked.
Closer.
Her pulse raced. She could hear the faint shuffle of footsteps approaching. Not the polite steps of a guest or hotel staff, these were calculated, careful, almost predatory.
Outside, Daniel’s car remained parked, engine quiet, headlights dim.
He noticed a figure move along the hallway through the reflection in the glass. A figure he hadn’t expected to be this bold.
His jaw tightened, knowing that whoever it was, they weren’t here to watch anymore.
Inside, Lena felt a chill that wasn’t from the air conditioner, crawling up her spine. The figure stopped just outside her room. A hand lingered on the door handle.
Her phone buzzed again.
Unknown Number: You shouldn’t have stayed up this long.
Her fingers shook violently as she tried to lock eyes with the shadow. The hallway lights flickered once, then steadied. But when the glow returned, she realised the figure had moved closer, now directly in front of her room.
Her chest tightened. A dry, strangled sound left her throat.
She pressed herself against the chair, whispering to herself, “Not here. Not now. Please…”
The door handle rattled slightly.
And then… silence.
Too long.
Every second stretched like an eternity.
A soft, deliberate whisper came from the hall, so low she almost didn’t hear it.
“I’ve been waiting for you.”
Lena’s heart froze.
Her eyes darted toward the window, and there it was.
Daniel, still outside, was watching all the information dawning on his face. The watcher hadn’t just been observing Lena anymore…
They were inside.
The 48 hours had officially begun.
And for Lena, tonight, it wasn’t just about the flight anymore.
It was about surviving the night.
