CHAPTER FIVE I peeked through the mess of people and beheld a small pool. My past experience made me expect a gaggle of rubber ducks, but there were instead some strange lilypads. They were shaped like clovers and floated about of their own free will. A contestant stepped up to the round pool and passed some coins to the manager who then handed the eager customer a set of weights. “Good luck,” the barker told them as he stepped back with a sly smile. The customer scoffed. “I don’t need luck when I have skill.” He tossed one of the weights at a lilypad. The green saucer floated out of the way, avoiding the sinking weight which dropped straight to the bottom of the pool. The man frowned and tossed again, and again the pad moved out of the way.
