Her sharp words told me that the conversation was finished but I still wasn’t. There was the dinner that night and I would try to keep my promise to the kindly Giles as best I could. We rolled fast through the streets and returned to the shopping district. The driver parked us along the curb that abutted the gravel sidewalks and we stepped out. A large department store of three floors with a wide front loomed up in front of us.
A few ladies smiled and bowed their heads to Bessy who returned the compliment. “Good morning, Lady Tolic,” they greeted her.
“Good morning, ladies,” she replied as she headed toward the inset front doors.
