Mike had ignored the doctor’s orders that he should rest at home for a few days before going into work. He showed up at the station house on the dot of four P.M., the day after his release from the hospital, to begin his regular shift. He barely got to his desk when Lieutenant Price stepped out of his office, asking Mike to come talk to him. “You’ll work the desk until you get the needed clearance from your doctor to go back on duty,” Price told him once they were seated. “I figured as much.” “I’ve set up an appointment with you to see the department psychiatrist, too.” “Oh, joy,” Mike muttered.
