Chapter 007: The True Worth The blinding white light of the hospital room felt a little less hostile by the next morning. The thick layer of gauze around Elena’s head had been replaced with a smaller, cleaner bandage, and the doctors had finally cleared her to sit up. Cole hadn't left his post. He had briefly used the small bathroom in her room to wash his face and change into a clean t-shirt his mother brought, but his eyes never completely left Elena. Every time she stirred, his hand was right there, grounding her. A firm, rhythmic knock echoed at the door, and the heavy oak barrier swung open. Grandfather Harrington stepped into the room. He didn't look like the intimidating, ruthless billionaire who had interrogated them at the dinner table twenty-four hours ago. He looked tired, his sharp gray eyes carrying a profound sense of gravity. He stopped at the foot of the bed, his hands resting on the silver handle of his cane. "Grandfather," Cole said, his voice instantly growing guarded as he stood up, instinctively shifting his body to shield Elena slightly. "Sit down, Cole," the old man said softly, waving a hand. He turned his gaze entirely to Elena. The room grew incredibly quiet. "Miss Vance. I came here personally to see how you were recovering." "I'm feeling much better, Mr. Harrington," Elena said, keeping her voice steady despite the faint throb behind her temples. "Thank you." The old man looked down at his cane, then back up at her, a rare, genuine expression of respect softening his harsh features. "My security team showed me the camera footage from the conservatory. Justin’s actions were criminal, and he will face the full weight of the law. But what you did... throwing yourself in front of a weapon to shield my grandson..." He paused, taking a slow breath. "That is not something that can be bought, and it is not something that can be faked." Elena’s heart skipped a beat. Beside her, she felt Cole tense up. Had his grandfather found out about the contract? "I spent years worrying that Cole would only surround himself with people who cared about our name and our money," Grandfather Harrington continued, looking between the two of them. "But seeing the loyalty you showed last night proved to me that he has chosen wisely. You saved his life, Elena. The Harrington family owes you a debt that we can never truly repay." He stepped closer, placing a heavy, warm hand on Cole’s shoulder. "The inheritance is yours, Cole. No more tests. No more ultimatums. Anyone who fights for each other the way you two did last night deserves to lead this family." With a final, respectful nod to Elena, the old man turned and quietly exited the room, leaving the door to click shut behind him. The silence that followed was heavy with irony. Cole slowly turned back to Elena, a look of profound disbelief on his face. They had won. The multi-million dollar inheritance was completely secure, and Elena’s tuition would be paid in full. But as Elena looked up into Cole's blue eyes, she realized the terrifying truth: the lie had worked perfectly, but the feelings inside the room were no longer a game. Elena stared at the closed door, her mind racing. The weight of the grandfather's words hung heavily in the air. The inheritance was safe. Her tuition was guaranteed. Everything they had set out to achieve in that cold, calculated contract had just been handed to them on a silver platter. But it felt completely wrong. She looked over at Cole. He was staring at the floor, his hands shoved deep into his pockets, his shoulders tense. The victorious smile she expected him to wear was nowhere to be found. "Cole?" she asked softly, her voice breaking the thick silence. "We won. Why do you look like we just lost everything?" Cole finally looked up, his blue eyes swirling with a mix of intense guilt and frustration. He took a slow step toward the bed. "Because we lied, Elena. He thinks you took that hit for me out of some grand, deep devotion because we're in love. He thinks we're this perfect, loyal couple." "I did take it for you," Elena said automatically, her brow furrowing. "That part wasn't a lie." But the reason he thinks you did it is!" Cole said, his voice rising slightly before he caught himself and quieted down, mindful of the hospital setting. He sat on the edge of her mattress, looking down at her wrapped hand. "You did it because you're an incredible, brave person who wouldn't let anyone get hurt. But my family thinks it’s because of this fake relationship. We trapped them in a lie, Elena. And worse... I feel like I trapped you." Elena watched him, realizing how much the pressure of his family's expectations had always weighed on him. He didn't want to be a fraud anymore. And as she looked at him, she realized she didn't want to fake it either—but for a completely different reason. "Cole," she murmured, reaching out to touch his arm. "What if it isn't a lie anymore?" Cole froze, his eyes snapping up to meet hers. The heart monitor beside the bed gave a sudden, telltale spike in its rhythm, echoing the exact pacing of Elena's racing heart. "What are you saying?" Cole whispered, almost afraid to hope. The contract is just paper," Elena said, her gaze steady despite the flush warming her cheeks. "But staying up all night with you? Learning everything about you? Throwing myself in front of that bottle? None of that was in the fine print, Cole. I didn't do it for the tuition money. I did it because... I couldn't bear the thought of a world without you in it." Cole stared at her, the breath leaving his lungs in a sudden rush. The fierce, guarded walls he had built around his heart since childhood completely crumbled in the span of a second. Cole stared at her, the final walls around his heart completely shattering. He didn't say a word. Instead, he leaned in, his hand gently cupping her jawline as he closed the distance between them. His lips met hers in a kiss that was completely different from the one in the conservatory. There was no adrenaline, no fear, and absolutely no pretense. It was slow, deeply tender, and filled with all the unspoken truth of what they had become to each other. Elena let out a soft breath against his mouth, her fingers tangling into the fabric of his t-shirt, pulling him closer as the steady beep of the heart monitor accelerated. The quiet click of the hospital door drawing open completely escaped their notice. "Oh!" The soft, delighted gasp made them break apart instantly. Elena’s cheeks flushed a bright crimson as she looked toward the doorway. Cole’s mother was standing there, holding a fresh bouquet of flowers, a radiant, knowing smile spreading across her face. "Hope I did not interrupt anything," she said, her eyes twinkling with pure happiness as she walked into the room. She set the flowers down on the bedside table, beaming at the two of them. "In fact, seeing you two like this is exactly what I was hoping for. You both look beautiful together." Cole cleared his throat, a rare, boyish smirk tugging at the corner of his lips as he rubbed the back of his neck. "Mom. A little warning next time?" "Nonsense," his mother laughed softly, leaning down to gently squeeze Elena’s hand. "I am just so incredibly happy to see you awake, Elena. And clearly, you are in excellent hands."
