Chapter 2

Camila's POV Swirling in the abyss I found myself in, I was pulled out of it by another round of cold water that moved like an electric shock through my body, due to the fresh wounds inflicted on me. I opened my eyes and there was Sam again. "The alpha demands that you join the other omegas in their chores immediately," she delivered her message and walked away. I struggled to get up and when I finally did, I left the omegas quarters and joined in the cleaning up of the pack house. Sometimes, Samantha and my mother forgets that we were all omegas despite the high respect given to them by the former alpha of our pack, before his son, Ridge took over. Amongst all the omegas, only my family wasn't treated like dirt because of some sort of sacrifice my father did and that made Ridge's father extra loyal to my family. But still, that special respect was not extended to me. Not by Ridge, my mother or Sam. Not even by any member of our pack. Even the lowly omegas didn't like me either. At first, I thought it was because I was sort of different. I had no scent and no wolf. Rather I had white hair which nobody in the pack had. I was tagged weird. But then, my mother often reminded me that I was the cause of my father's death. She would cry and whip me for killing my father. At some point, I believed her. I could barely remember what had happened that night, but one thing was for sure, my father had died because of me. This was the one reason my mother could maltreat me and Sam had me wrapped around her fingers. I sighed heavily. My body ached from all the beatings, but no one said anything to me, not even the alpha. As I continued to beat the rugs, I remembered the dream Sam had forcefully woke me up from. I've been having this dream for a while now, but today, it was a bit clearer. I could barely see the woman's face that had told me to run, I could only remember seeing the flaming trees. What did it all mean? I wondered and paused in thought. Just then, a whip landed on my back and I fell down on my knees, gasping in pain. "No pausing, omega. We don't have all day!" I heard the shrill voice of the chief gamma. "Get up!" He yelled. I scrambled up as tears welled up my eyes and choked my throat. I continued beating the rug as he stared at me in anger before walking away. When would this all end? ~~~~~~~~ Everything was ready for the mating ceremony and soon everyone would be trooping into the pack house. I stood at the backyard of the house with a bucket of water in front of me, intended for my bath. I stared at my scarred skin and closed my eyes. It will never end, a tiny voice whispered at the back of my head. I swallowed and began to take my bath. It wasn't as if I was preparing for the ceremony. I just wanted to get dirt off my skin. I was never going to get a mate in this place. Today was my eighteenth birthday, nobody remembered and neither did I. There was no point in counting anymore or hoping for a mate. I sighed once more as I stared at the bucket in front of me. • Alphas from different packs were present in the Shadow Moon pack. For the first time, the Shadow Moon pack was full. The moon was rising up in the sky and soon, everyone would find their mate. I and a few omegas were busy around serving the alphas and betas. My sister was somewhere with her friends drooling over every alpha in sight. She looked extremely beautiful in her burgundy dress. She had a luxury I could never have. Just then, the moon rose high in the sky and everyone was getting their mates. Shrieks of happiness and lust filled the hall. I sighed and looked away from them all. As usual, I was the unlucky one. Nothing good ever comes my way. I was about to walk out of the pack house when I bumped into someone, spilling the drinks I held on a tray on him. He cursed in a low tone. "Are you blind?" He demanded, his voice filled with anger and power. Why was he so angry? And why was the hall all of a sudden quiet? "I'm sorry, I.." I began to apologize without looking up at him as I attempted to get rid of the stains on his shirt with my free hand. "Save your apology," he replied curtly as he held my hand cruelly, stopping me from my futile attempt to clean his shirt. Just then, I began to hear whispers. "Isn't that Alpha Asher Reed of the Nightcrawlers pack?" "The ruthless brute of the Northwest," "Damn, his pictures do him no justice! He's so handsome!" "He's heartless, you know," All their whispers drifted into my ears and I swallowed hard as I lifted my head to look at him. He had a dark expression on his face as he stared down at me. My fingers trembled and the tray fell from my hand. The glasses shattered on the floor as the rest of the wine spilled. I gulped in fear. I had heard of him. Sam and her friends would not stop talking about him. He was dangerously handsome. He was not just an alpha but a warrior, skilled in the art of war. He was known far and wide for his bravery, ruthlessness and cruelty. He had green eyes with dilated pupils that gave out a bluish color. His eyes were one of a kind. He had sharp and chiseled jawline with an incredibly broad shoulders, fitting his lithe frame. His eyes narrowed at me and in a way, they became warm as his lips were drawn into a thin line. "Mate," he said huskily, to the shock of everyone including me. He still did not let go of my hand. I was extremely shocked at what I just heard despite his deep and rich voice resonating in my memory. "What?" I exclaimed softly. I had no wolf, how then did we become mate? How did his wolf call out to mine? I could feel nothing. But, that wasn't what scared me. What scared me was the fact that I had just being mated to a dangerous man.
