"You are being disloyal to your family," Torin shouted. His voice cracked with rage as he leaned heavily against the wrought iron gate.
Rowan projected his voice over the roaring diesel engines so every neighbor on the street could hear him clearly. "You want to talk about family loyalty, Torin?"
Rowan took a measured step forward and let his cold eyes sweep over the gathered crowd of elites. The residents of the district leaned in closer to hear the scandalous details.
"Let us talk about loyalty. For fifteen years I lived in your unheated attic and wore your discarded clothes. I cooked your meals and scrubbed your floors while you slept until noon."
Rowan kept his tone level and unbothered. "When Genevieve bought purebred dogs for her show competitions, those animals ate premium cuts of meat from the butcher. I ate their scraps from the counter. I was nothing but an unpaid servant."
He pointed a steady finger at Harlan Sterling. The patriarch stood paralyzed under the bright construction lights. The illusion of the charitable Sterling family shattered into pieces as the crowd erupted into hushed whispers. Reputation served as the primary currency in this coastal district, and tonight the Sterling family account hit zero.
Genevieve lost all the color in her face. "Slander!" she shrieked, pointing a trembling finger at Rowan. "This is vicious slander!"
She spun around and looked frantically at the judging faces of her peers. She grabbed the sleeve of Councilman Thomas and tried to pull him back to her side.
"Do not listen to a single word he says," Genevieve pleaded. "He is having a mental breakdown. We gave him food and shelter when he had nothing!"
Councilman Thomas pulled his arm away and took a deliberate step backward.
Torin wiped a trickle of blood from his bruised chin. His jaw throbbed from the strike, but his natural arrogance refused to let him submit. He reached backward and grabbed Nerida by the wrist, yanking her aggressively to the front of the crowd.
Torin felt confident in his next move. He had seduced Nerida simply because she belonged to Rowan. Torin wanted to prove he could take anything his foster brother possessed, and Nerida had complied the moment she saw his sports car and designer watch. She obeyed the rules of money. She knew how to play the social game better than anyone else in their university circle.
"You are pathetic, Rowan," Torin sneered to the horrified neighbors. "He is just bitter because his own fiancee realized what a loser he really is."
Torin squeezed Nerida by the arm and pulled her closer to his chest to present a united front.
"Nerida left him voluntarily," Torin announced loudly. "Tell them the truth, Nerida. Tell them how he neglected you and how you came to me for comfort."
Nerida stood frozen under the glaring floodlights. She looked at the bruised and twisted face of Torin, and then she looked back at Rowan standing tall in his custom coat. Her mind raced as she calculated her options.
She had slept with Torin for a financial upgrade. The Sterlings held immense wealth while Rowan was a penniless charity case who scrubbed their floors. The power dynamics of the neighborhood had shifted the moment the bulldozers arrived.
Nerida looked past Rowan and analyzed the sprawling construction site. Heavy transport trucks idled on the torn grass while workers offloaded massive steel crates stamped with industrial hazard warnings. A towering mechanical drill tore deep into the earth to lay geothermal pipes. This operation went far beyond a luxury renovation. Rowan was building an impenetrable fortress.
Rowan was spending millions of dollars without batting an eye. The sheer scale of his liquid wealth made the Sterling family look like peasants playing with pocket change. Nerida realized that Torin only had a monthly allowance from his father. If she played this situation right she might secure a place inside that secure bunker.
Rowan reached into the inner pocket of his dark coat and pulled out a thick stack of one hundred dollar bills. He peeled off twenty bills from the stack and handed them directly to Orson Drake who stood observing the crowd from the driveway.
"Great work securing the perimeter tonight," Rowan told the contractor. "Keep the crews running all night long. I want the food storage units sealed and insulated by Friday."
"Yes sir," Orson nodded. He pocketed the cash tip without hesitation. "We will not stop until the bunker is secure."
Rowan turned his cold gaze back to Nerida. He tapped the remaining stack of bills against his open palm and offered a slight smirk. He fanned the green dollars ever so slightly under the bright xenon lights.
Nerida felt a massive surge of adrenaline rush through her veins. The choice became obvious. She knew exactly who the real winner was in this dispute.
"No," Nerida gasped loudly. She ripped her arm out of the tight grip of Torin and took three large steps away from him.
Her face twisted into a mask of victimhood as she prepared her performance.
"What are you doing?" Torin hissed under his breath. His eyes widened in panic as he realized he was losing control of the narrative.
"I will not lie for you anymore, Torin!" Nerida cried out dramatically. She threw her hands in the air for maximum effect. "You coerced me! You threatened to have Rowan kicked out of the house and thrown onto the streets if I did not go along with your sick games!"
The neighbors gasped in unison. Councilman Thomas shook his head in disgust and glared directly at Harlan Sterling.
"Nerida, shut your mouth this instant!" Genevieve screamed. She took a threatening step forward but stopped when she saw the private security guards standing near the excavators. Her elegant facade crumbled into dust.
"I will not be silenced by you people anymore!" Nerida yelled back. She squeezed out tears and let them run down her cheeks.
She ran desperately toward Rowan with her arms outstretched. Her eyes pleaded for a scrap of his wealth and a chance at forgiveness.
"I loved Rowan! I have always loved Rowan!" she sobbed as she stopped just short of the property line. "You people forced me into this nightmare. You are monsters!"
Torin stood paralyzed on the sidewalk. His face flushed a deep purple shade and his mouth hung open in shock. He looked like he was going to vomit on the concrete.
Rowan let out a low chuckle that echoed across the quiet street. He watched the chaos unfold with deep satisfaction.
"There you have it," Rowan said smoothly. He addressed the stunned crowd of wealthy elites who were eating up the drama. "The prestigious Sterling family. Liars, thieves, and abusers."
Rowan tucked the stack of cash back into his coat. He did not spare Nerida a single glance of pity or offer her a hand. He looked squarely at the neighbors and delivered his final blow.
"You all might want to check your own valuables before inviting them over for dinner again," Rowan advised. He turned his back on the Sterling family and walked toward the roaring excavators, leaving them broken in the mud.
