RHYS’s POV.
With a heavy sigh, I climbed out of the car and my eyes caught sight of my mother standing on the porch. She had been calling and calling. I had to reschedule my meeting and come to the house because Madam Rockwell would not mind coming to the company to create a scene—that’s how crazy she could get.
She didn’t smile as I walked up to her and kissed her lightly on the cheek. I knew I was about to get an earful.
“Where have you been?” She asked as soon as I turned away from her, “I asked you to come home to meet someone yesterday and you blatantly refused. Even your assistant was not taking his calls”
Her statement made me remember what happened last night and a small smile crept up on my lips. I immediately wiped it off as soon as it came. It wasn’t a cool thing to find out your boyfriend was cheating on you but if that didn’t happen, how would I have gotten married?
Yes, married. I was married and I was a hundred percent sure Mrs Rockwell was going to freak out when she found out.
“Answer me, Jamil” she hissed, “what happened and why did you disgrace me like that?”
“I told you I was not meeting anyone, mum” I said as I turned and made my way into the house. I haven’t been here in months—maybe because my penthouse has become more comfortable than this place.
“Well, you have to get married and that too soon, Jamil” she continued, “you are not getting any younger and you are letting some stranger run your father’s company while you watch”
I heaved another sigh. Couldn’t she leave me alone? The fact that my father gave that stupid clause in his will before he passed away was funny to me. I never told him I wanted to take over his automobile company before he passed but he— I shook my head to remove such thought. Not today!
“I only came to see how you were doing, Mrs Rockwell” I continued, “I should leave now”
“Jamil!” She was furious, “don’t you dare act like I am one of your staff right now!”
I turned to face her, an angry expression looming over my face, “Well, if you act like one, you will be treated as one”
This woman was aware of the empire I commanded. The thousand of staff under my command but she acts like I was still that seven year old who was obsessed with cars.
“I made another arrangement” her voice finally became subtle, “you should meet her tonight. Maybe the two of you can kick things off”
I finally stopped walking, turning to her. A mischievous glint formed on my mother’s face but I was about to shatter everything she was cooking up in her head.
“I am married mum” I dropped the bombshell and the look on her face immediately went blank, a frown taking its place.
“What did you say?” She asked, a look of surprise flashing through her face.
“I said I got married” I repeated myself and she started laughing—a kind of laugh that signified she didn’t believe me.
“You must be joking, Jamil” Mrs Rockwell said again, “I know you hate when I bug you about marriage but since when did you start lying to me o
I massaged the space between my brows before pulling out my phone. Luckily, my assistant already sent me the pictures of our marriage certificate so I just pushed the phone towards her. The moment she saw it, Mrs Rockwell almost exploded. Her eyes darkened and her jaw clenched.
“What the heck, Jamil!” She hissed, “what rubbish is this?”
“Like I said, I am married, mum” I told her again, “so quit trying to set me up with anybody you deem fit okay?”
Her jaw dropped harder than she could handle, her eyebrows almost hit her hairline.
Before she could say anything, I snatched the phone away from her and buttoned my suit jacket again but she was not going to let me hear the last of it.
“You can’t do this, Rhys!” She hissed, “how can you marry a no name like her? Who the heck is she anyways?”
“You will get to meet your daughter-in-law son “
At that moment, my phone rang and my assistant's name popped up. I clicked on the receive button and pressed the phone against my ear while making my way to the front door. Mrs Rockwell was still talking but I tuned her out—I was already used to her.
“Yes, tell me”
“Boss” he called out, “the captain of the team is here to see you alongside Caspian”
At the mention of his name, anger surged through me. The nerve of him to show up at my office after acting like a stupid bastard.
I looked up the lady he cheated on Dakarai with and that woman was nothing compared to my wife.
Hmmm! My wife! That sounded really personal and I kinda— the way she looked when she asked me to marry her out of the blue, the way she looked sleeping on my bed and how she looked earlier today. Those moments have been so entrenched in my head. Part of me does not even want to forget them.
“Boss?” His voice pulled me out of my reverie.
“I can’t see them today” I finally told him, “reschedule”
Before he could answer, I ended the call before turning to my mother again who was still whining. But at that moment, my phone rang again and an unfamiliar number popped up—Dakarai.
