Chapter 02
A BIG BLOW.
June's POV.
“Hey, what's up?” the voice came from behind.
“Drea,” I righted myself from the sofa. “How are you here? You didn't say you were coming to see me.”
“Yeah.” she closed the door, and took some steps in. “I had some business to do in the neighborhood so I decided to stop by, and say hello.”
“You can sit while I get you a cup of coffee.” I said.
I walked towards a corner in my office where the coffee machine was.
“So, what exactly did you come to do?” I asked, looking back as I grabbed a cup of coffee from the coffee machine.
“Well, you know, business as usual.” she said, shrugging a shoulder. “One of my clients wanted us to meet in a restaurant around here.”
“Oh, so how did it go?” I asked, walking back with two cups of coffee in my hands. “Did you get it?”
“Not yet, there are still a few things to address before we proceed with work.” she sighed. “Actually, it's taking longer than I expected. We should have gotten over this since the previous week, but here we are.”
“You will get it.” I said with a smile as I pushed a cup of coffee across the table to her. “That should do.”
“Thank you.” she drank some coffee, and then dropped the cup on the table. “Right! I saw Stone leaving earlier. Why was he here?”
“Well, he wants my help.” I said, shrugging a shoulder. “Apparently, the court has ordered to shut down his company if he doesn't get an investor within the month.”
“So, how has that got anything to do with you?” she raised a brow. “There are other places he could have found an investor, why does he have to come to you.”
“I have no idea either.” I said, my nose in my coffee. “Perhaps, he thinks that I'll be able to help him. I mean, has he suddenly forgotten how he treated me in the past?”
“That is exactly what I'm saying.” she said. “He should be ashamed of himself for coming to you for help.”
“He sounded really desperate.” I sighed. “But I just can't help but remember the way he treated me.”
“So, are you going to help him?” she arched a brow. “You seem to have that look right now.”
“What look?”
“Well, that look you give when you are having a change of mind.” she shrugged. “I just hope you don't forget the way he treated you, and decide to help him.”
“Of course not.” I made a face. “I mean, even if I'm going to help him, then he has to earn it.”
“Yeah. But what's this?” she asked, picking up the document on the table.
“I did some digging about his company, and I found those.” I said, watching as she turned the pages. “Turns out he isn't going to change anytime soon. He's always been like that.”
“You have got to be kidding me.” she scoffed, blinking her eyes in shock. “I mean, how did you get to find out about all these?”
“I wanted him to suffer the way I did, so I'd to look for a way to hurt him in ways that'll break him.”
“Yeah. I know that what he did to you in the past was bad, but these?” she lifted her face to me, and shook her head. “This is more than I expected. This is totally going to crush him.”
“Yes, that's exactly what I want.” I nodded. “I suffered, and he has to suffer too. He has to know what I went through.”
“This could send him to jail, June.” she said with a serious look on her face. “What are you going to do with these? Are you going to expose him?”
“Well, I plan on doing so.” I sighed. “But now, I think I'm just going to use this to threaten him for the time being. I'll use it to torment him.”
“Are you sure you want to do that?” she narrowed her gaze at the words. “Are you sure that you can actually do this?”
“It's not enough that his company has gone bankrupt, Drea.” I said, shaking my head. “The court wants him to shut down his company because he can't afford to pay his employees anymore. With these, I could get rid of him for good.”
“Yes, I know, but the question is do you really want to do that?” she asked, looking me in the eyes. “Are you sure about this?”
“I-I don't understand.” I stuttered, trying to wrap my head around her words. “Why are you asking? You know what he did to me. And he has to suffer.”
“Yes, I know.” she replied. “No one is saying that he won't suffer for what he did to you. But do you think this is the best way to go about it?”
“I have never been certain about anything my whole life.” I said, speaking through my teeth. “But I'm certain about this.”
“What about Olive?” she mentioned, raising a brow. “Are you sure you want to raise her without her father? Isn't she enough reason for you to think twice about this?”
“Olive can do without a father.” I said. “Besides, even if she needs one, certainly not someone like him.”
“Not someone like him, but you still can't deny that he is her father.” she said, trying to keep her voice down. “That would be punishing her for something she knows nothing about.”
“No, you're wrong.” I said, shaking my head. “I am doing her a good thing by pushing him farther away from her. He isn't good for her, Drea. Besides, he doesn't even know that I was pregnant for him when he kicked me out.”
“You didn't tell him?” she narrowed her gaze.
“Of course, I didn't.” I replied. “I was going to. But that day was the day he decided to kick me out. Telling him wasn't going to change his mind. He had someone else, and he wanted to be with her.”
“But still—”
“Look, I-I don't want to talk about this.” I said, shaking my head. “It happened five years ago. And I'm over it now. I just want to live my life. Besides, I have someone else now.”
“You mean Greg?” she arched a brow.
“Yes.” I nodded. “We have decided to take things slowly, and so far it's been good for the both of us.”
“Do you really love him?” she asked, in a curious tone. “Or are you just trying to use him to get over Stone?”
“Really?” I jerked my head back slightly. “Is that what you think? I love Greg. And so far, he seems like the only thing that makes sense in my life right now. So yeah. I love him. And we are going to get married soon.”
“Yes, you've been saying those same words for as long as I can remember.” she sighed. “Now I'm beginning to think that you're just making it up.”
“Whatever.” I rolled my eyes. “You can think whatever you want. But it's only a matter of time before we get married.”
“Only a matter of time?” she raised a brow as if asking if I could listen to myself. “I mean, you both have been together for three years, and it's still a matter of time before you both get married?”
“Like I said we are taking things slowly.” I reminded, shrugging a shoulder. “Do you have a problem with that?”
“Me? No.” she made a face. “As long as you know what you're doing. It's fine by me.”
Just then, my phone chimed, and the screen came alive. I picked it up from the table. It was a text message. As I opened the message by tapping on the screen with a finger, a photo popped up. My heart sank.
“Damn it” I muttered under my breath.
“What is it?” Drea asked, her voice laced with concern.
“It's Greg.” I said, showing her the photo.
She covered her mouth with her hands. “Oh, no.”
