Night Watch

Chapter 6 — Night Watch Night settled over the police station like a heavy blanket. The streets outside were quiet, but it was the kind of quiet that made everyone uneasy. Marcus stood near the shattered front window, gripping his rifle while watching the dark street. The moonlight revealed abandoned cars, broken glass, and dark stains on the road. Somewhere far away, a zombie groaned. Inside the station, the team rested. Tyler leaned against a wall, cleaning the dried blood from his baseball bat. “I hate the quiet,” he muttered. “Feels like something bad is about to happen.” “It usually does,” Jade replied calmly while sharpening her knife. Dr. Elena sat at one of the desks, organizing the medical supplies they had taken from the pharmacy earlier. Lucas paced near the hallway. “You should try to rest,” Elena told him gently. “I can’t,” Lucas replied. “Not after what happened today.” Everyone understood what he meant. They had barely survived the fight at the mall. And now the city outside felt more dangerous than ever. Marcus continued watching the street. Something didn’t feel right. He had survived enough battles to recognize the feeling of danger creeping closer. Suddenly— A loud metal clang echoed outside. Everyone froze. Tyler stood up immediately. “What was that?” Marcus raised his rifle. “Stay quiet.” Another sound followed. Scraping. Like something heavy dragging across the road. Marcus slowly stepped closer to the window and looked outside. At first he saw nothing. Then movement appeared in the darkness. Figures. Dozens of them. Zombies. They were gathering in the street. Marcus’ eyes widened. “How many?” Jade whispered. “Too many,” Marcus said. The group quickly moved into defensive positions. Lucas and Tyler pushed a heavy desk against the entrance door. Jade turned off the remaining lights inside the station. “Maybe they won’t notice us,” she said. But the hope didn’t last long. One zombie wandered too close to the door. It sniffed the air. Then it slammed its rotting hands against the glass. BANG. More zombies turned toward the sound. Within seconds the entire group of undead rushed forward. The glass door shook violently as they began pounding on it. “They know we’re here!” Tyler shouted. “Hold the door!” Marcus ordered. The barricade held for a moment. Then the glass began to crack. Elena quickly grabbed her medical bag. “If they break through, we run through the back hallway!” Marcus nodded. “Everyone ready.” The pounding grew louder. Cracks spread across the glass. Then— CRASH! The door shattered. Zombies flooded into the station. “Fight!” Marcus shouted. Tyler swung his bat and crushed the first zombie’s skull. Jade stabbed another through the eye. Lucas fired two quick shots from his pistol. But more zombies kept coming. Too many. “Back hallway!” Marcus yelled. The team retreated quickly through the corridor behind the front desk. The hallway lights flickered above them. Their footsteps echoed through the empty station. Behind them, the zombies followed. Growling. Hungry. They burst through the back door and ran into the alley behind the station. Cold air filled their lungs as they ran. Marcus turned and fired several shots to slow the zombies. “Keep moving!” he shouted. They sprinted down the alley toward the street. Suddenly— A powerful engine roared nearby. Headlights blinded them. A large armored truck skidded to a stop in front of them. The side door swung open. A man in military gear leaned out. “Get in if you want to live!” he shouted. Marcus hesitated for a split second. The zombies were already spilling into the alley behind them. He looked at his team. Then back at the stranger. “Everyone in the truck!” Marcus ordered. They jumped inside just as the zombies reached the alley entrance. The door slammed shut. The truck sped away into the night. Inside the vehicle, the survivors caught their breath. The stranger looked at them seriously. “You’re lucky I found you,” he said. Marcus narrowed his eyes. “Who are you?” The man smiled slightly. “Name’s Captain Reeves.” He paused before adding something that made everyone go silent. “And if you want to survive this apocalypse…” “You’re going to need my help.”
