Chapter 3

I took out of the box not another hospital statement, nor a black-and-white paternity test. It was a small memorial tablet, no bigger than my palm. I gently placed the tablet on the stage. Then, one by one, I took out the tiny, pitiful baby swaddles from the box. Along with the pair of baby shoes I had sewn with my own hands. I carefully arranged them in front of the memorial tablet. The entire venue fell into complete silence. Not even the sound of a pin dropping could be heard. Everyone was stunned by my strange actions, unable to understand what I was trying to do. Serena's cries came to an abrupt stop. She stood there blankly, unable to figure out my intention. Julian's face instantly drained of color. He stared at the memorial tablet, his body beginning to tremble uncontrollably. "Julian." I finally raised my eyes to look at him. My voice was as calm as a pool of stagnant water. "Do you still remember him?" My gaze swept across every guest sitting below the stage. "That's right. I am not Alexander's biological mother. Because my child..." My voice trembled uncontrollably. The grief I had buried for so long, the cries of pain I had never allowed myself to release, all burst out at that moment. "My own child... died before he even had the chance to see this world!" I had finally found the outlet for all the pain I had been holding inside. Clutching the nameless memorial tablet in my arms, I collapsed to the ground and burst into tears. "My baby... Mommy is sorry. Mommy was useless... Mommy is sorry to you and your grandmother!" My heartbreaking cries were like a knife, cutting into everyone's hearts and tearing away a piece of their flesh. I could clearly feel the atmosphere in the room slowly changing. Julian's mother covered her mouth, trying to hide her sobs, but tears instantly streamed down her face. Even Old Master Sterling, who had always been dignified and powerful, had reddened eyes. His cane struck the floor again and again. "What exactly happened?!" Julian's father was the first to realize who the true culprit was. He glared furiously at Julian on the stage. "You unfilial son! Explain everything to me!" "I carried our child for seven months. I carefully avoided everything I shouldn't eat, worried about him every single day, and looked forward to the day our baby would be born safely." With tears filling my eyes, I looked at Julian's pale face. "I had once naively imagined that our love from our younger years, even after being worn down by time, would still have a trace of warmth left. I once believed that even if you no longer loved me the way you used to, at least you would look forward to the birth of our child... But I was wrong. I was completely wrong. You chose to believe Serena. Because of nothing more than her baseless accusation against my mother, you allowed her to hurt my mother without mercy. When the news of my mother's death reached me, I was devastated. I went into labor prematurely from the shock and collapsed at home..." Holding the memorial tablet, I couldn't feel even the slightest trace of warmth from my child. My body trembled uncontrollably. "Julian, do you know how much blood I lost in the emergency room that day? My child... he couldn't even see this world before he..." I could no longer continue. The overwhelming grief tightened around my throat, making it impossible to speak. "You killed your own child! Your actions killed your biological son!" My accusations were like a cuckoo crying blood, every word filled with unbearable sorrow. The elders of the Sterling family all wore heavy expressions. Julian looked at me, then at the tiny memorial tablet in my arms. For the first time, regret and despair finally appeared on his face. "No... that's not how it was... Claire... I didn't... I didn't mean for this to happen..." He stammered out his defense. I stood up and coldly avoided the hand he reached out toward me. I took a step back. "Serena." I looked at the woman collapsed on the side, my voice filled with mockery. "Whether the child in your womb can truly call Julian his father, you know the answer better than anyone. Do you really think you can deceive Julian for the rest of your life? Do you really think that by using an illegitimate child, you can become Mrs. Sterling legitimately?" At that moment, my maid stepped forward and handed a document folder to Julian's father. "This is... another paternity test?" Julian's father asked suspiciously as he opened the folder. The maid replied word by word, "Inside is a paternity test report, along with photographs of Serena entering and leaving hotels with multiple men. During her pregnancy, Serena stayed in hotels with several men other than Young Master Sterling. Alexander is not Young Master Sterling's biological son." The entire venue exploded like a kettle of boiling water. "Impossible! This paternity test must be fake! Those photos were created by AI!" Serena screamed as she tried to snatch the document folder away. "Julian! Julian! Tell them! Tell them that Alexander is our biological son!" But Julian looked as if all the strength had been drained from his body. He murmured repeatedly, "He's not mine... How could he... How could he not be mine..." Serena's face turned pale and lifeless. She collapsed onto the ground, unable to say another word. The truth had finally come to light. Serena had been carrying another man's child, but she had carefully calculated everything, manipulating the timing so that Julian would believe the child was his. She had plotted against my mother, causing me to lose my baby, while successfully giving birth herself. Then she planned to force Julian and me to divorce, taking my position as Mrs. Sterling. Unfortunately, no matter how cunning her schemes were, she had still made one fatal mistake. She never imagined that I would take the child away first and uncover his true identity. "Guards!" Old Master Sterling roared furiously, his cold gaze locked onto Serena. "Take this vicious, heartless woman away! Hand her over to the authorities. She deliberately harmed Ms. Whitmore. She will not escape punishment!" Several bodyguards quickly stepped forward and dragged the devastated Serena away. In the empty Sterling family estate, only my accusations continued to echo. I looked down at Julian. The man I had once married against everyone's objections. The man who had shared my bed for five years, yet whose heart had never truly been with me. "Julian... let's get divorced." He suddenly looked up. His eyes were filled with desperation. Tears streamed down his face and fell onto the floor. "Claire, no! I was wrong. I really know I was wrong. Please forgive me. Give me another chance... I'm begging you..." "A chance?" I let out a cold laugh. I had no intention of wasting my time trying to determine whether those were genuine tears or merely the tears of a desperate man. I looked at him with cold ridicule. "My child, my mother... do they have a chance to come back to life?"
