Chapter 2: Mother's Expectations

1140 Words
Alex's car slowly pulled into the driveway of the Drake family mansion in the Upper East Side. The elegant brownstone had stood for nearly a century, witnessing the rise and glory of the Drake family. Alex took a deep breath, preparing himself for the encounter with his mother, Elizabeth. Pushing open the heavy oak door, Alex was greeted by a familiar aroma. As always, Elizabeth had personally prepared his favorite dishes. "Alex, you're finally here," Elizabeth gracefully emerged from the kitchen, a loving smile on her face. Despite being in her sixties, Elizabeth still maintained the poise and grace of an aristocrat. "Sorry, Mother. Some work matters held me up," Alex apologized, placing a light kiss on his mother's cheek. "Work always comes first, doesn't it?" Elizabeth sighed softly, a hint of resignation in her voice. "Come, let's talk over dinner." The dining table was laden with exquisite dishes, but Alex found his usual appetite lacking. He knew a discussion about marriage was imminent. Sure enough, after the appetizers, Elizabeth broached the subject directly: "Alex, you're 36 now. Don't you think it's time to consider settling down?" Alex set down his cutlery, meeting his mother's gaze: "Mother, we've discussed this many times. My focus right now is my career. The company needs my full dedication." Elizabeth shook her head: "Career is important, but life isn't just about work. Your father already had you at your age. The Drake family needs an heir, Alex." "I understand your concerns, Mother. But I believe finding the right person is more important than rushing into marriage," Alex tried to explain his stance. A flash of disappointment crossed Elizabeth's eyes: "What about Natalie? She's a lovely girl, and you've known each other since childhood. I think you'd make a great match." Alex inwardly sighed. He had anticipated his mother would bring up Natalie. "Natalie is indeed wonderful, but we only have a sibling-like relationship. I need a partner who can stand beside me in battle, not just a pretty ornament." Elizabeth's expression turned serious: "Alex, you can't always measure a relationship by work standards. Marriage requires understanding and acceptance, not a business partnership." "I understand, Mother. But I believe a true partner should be a soulmate, not just a socially acceptable match," Alex insisted. Elizabeth took her son's hand: "I just don't want to see you end up alone, Alex. You work so hard, have you ever thought about who you're striving for?" Alex felt a twinge of guilt at the concern in his mother's words: "I know you mean well, Mother. But please trust me, when I meet the right person, I'll know." Elizabeth shook her head resignedly: "You always say that, but you won't even give yourself a chance. When was the last time you went on a date?" Alex was momentarily speechless. Indeed, it had been a long time since he'd been on a real date. Work had consumed his entire life, to the point where he'd forgotten to enjoy life's pleasures. Seeing her son's silence, Elizabeth sighed: "Alex, I'm not trying to force you into marriage. I just hope you can open your heart and give love a chance. Life is short; don't wait until it's too late to realize what you've missed." Alex looked deeply at his mother, noticing for the first time that her temples had more gray hair than before. Time was passing relentlessly, and he had been searching for life's meaning solely through work. Perhaps it was time to reassess his life. "I understand, Mother. I'll try to attend more social events and meet new people," Alex finally conceded. Elizabeth's face lit up with a gratified smile: "That's what I wanted to hear, dear. Remember, there's more to life than Dragon Enterprises." The dinner ended in a somewhat heavy atmosphere. As they parted, Elizabeth gave Alex a warm embrace: "No matter what, remember that I'll always love you, my child." Driving back to his apartment, Alex's mind echoed with his mother's words. He gazed at the flickering neon lights outside the car window, suddenly feeling an inexplicable loneliness. Perhaps it was time for a change. Little did he know that fate had already begun weaving an intricate web, and an opportunity that would completely transform his life was silently approaching. As he entered his penthouse, Alex loosened his tie and poured himself a glass of scotch. He walked to the floor-to-ceiling windows, looking out at the glittering cityscape. The conversation with his mother had stirred something within him – a realization that despite his professional success, there was a void in his personal life. He pulled out his phone, scrolling through his contacts. Most were business associates, clients, or employees. Where were the friends? The potential romantic interests? Alex couldn't remember the last time he'd called someone just to chat or to make plans for fun. With a sudden impulse, he dialed Natalie's number. She answered on the second ring, her voice bright with surprise. "Alex? This is unexpected." "Natalie, I've been thinking... that yacht party you mentioned. Is the invitation still open?" There was a pause before Natalie replied, her tone cautious but pleased. "Of course, Alex. It's this Saturday. Are you actually considering coming?" Alex took a deep breath. "Yes, I think I am. It's time I started living a little, don't you think?" Natalie's laugh was warm and genuine. "Well, well. Who are you, and what have you done with my workaholic cousin? I'll text you the details. Don't you dare back out at the last minute!" As he hung up, Alex felt a mix of excitement and trepidation. This was outside his comfort zone, but maybe that's exactly what he needed. He walked back to the window, raising his glass in a silent toast to the city below. "Here's to new beginnings," he murmured. Little did Alex know that this decision would set in motion a series of events that would challenge everything he thought he knew about himself and his carefully ordered world. The yacht party would be just the beginning of a journey that would lead him to unexpected places and introduce him to people who would change his life forever. As he prepared for bed, Alex felt a sense of anticipation he hadn't experienced in years. Tomorrow, he would wake up to the same responsibilities at Dragon Enterprises, but for the first time in a long while, he had something to look forward to beyond work. The yacht party loomed on the horizon, promising new experiences and potentially, new connections. With these thoughts swirling in his mind, Alex drifted off to sleep, unaware that fate was already setting the stage for an encounter that would turn his world upside down and challenge everything he thought he knew about love, life, and what truly matters in the grand scheme of things.
