After a thankfully uneventful night, Ally watched the sun begin to rise enjoying the blissful moment in the chaotic and stressful time she found herself in. As the sun climbed she did one final look across the canal before waking the girls.
After waking the girls, they worked together to move the skiff farther inland and using foilage, hide it. They grabbed their sacks and made a vow to each other that if something happened they would meet back here.
They moved cautiously out of the cove as they couldn’t climb the sharp cliffs that secluded it. Unfortunately the morning tide had caused there to be no easy way to get around to the other side of the cliff without wading through the water. Sticking close to the wall of the cliff, the girls used it as a support as they slowly worked their way around. Ally led the way being careful to look for anyone who may be on the other side. After successfully getting around to the larger beach, the girls rolled down their pants which had still gotten wet and put on their shoes. They had carried them in their sacks to avoid getting them wet. Looking around, Ally noted a small path leading up to the rise of the hill as it worked away from the cliffs. The girls made their way staying close and as quiet as possible. After reaching the rise Linny gasped.
“The farms they’re so large! Theres cattle and sheep!”
“It’s amazing.” Gwen stated.
The girls made their way further inland avoiding any passerbyers as they went. They spent that night and the next slowly walking inland being careful to stay hidden. As the days wore on Linny became more and more silent. After seeing the fields she had began pointing out all the wonders she saw. However Ally noticed that she was wearing out.
Mira whispered over to Ally. “She needs a good rest and food. Soon. I’m worried she won’t be able to go on much longer. We're out of food and we're not finding anything to eat.”
Ally frowned. “I know. But I don’t know who we can trust. I think we’re getting to the point we are going to have to take a risk. I think we’re far enough away from the shore now keep your eyes open for a family. I think that would be our best bet.”
Mira nodded and dropped back to pass it to Gwen who glanced at Linny before nodding. About an hour later. They began hearing voices. They ducked further into the trees and watched. Ally noted that Linny nearly collapsed against the tree before sliding to the ground. Ally slipped forward to see where the voices were coming from. She peaked around a tree and nearly smiled.
A young mother called her children in and smiled as she wiped the face of what appeared to be a toddler. This is it. We have to try. Ally slipped back to her friends before telling them her plan and to stay where they were.
Ally took a deep breath before approaching the house. She knocked on the door. It was answered by a young girl who appeared to be no more than ten years old.
“Hello. I’m Ally can I talk to your mom please?”
The girl smiled. “Hi Ally! Yeah, I’ll go get her!” “MOOOOMMMM Theres a girl here to see you!” She yelled into the house.
That small act itself made Ally feel better. Yelling in general was f*******n at the home. This young girl feeling comfortable enough to bellow to her mother made her feel that this was a well loved home. The woman Ally had seen before came to the door.
“Hello, how can I help you?”
“Ma’am, my name is Ally and I was wondering if you had somewhere for my sister to sleep indoors, and maybe some food for her? My friends and I can stay in your barn if that’s ok but my sister doesn’t have the strength to keep going like we can…” Ally briefly spilled out her whole story keeping back where they had come from and who they were hiding from.
“Oh honey of course! Please bring her in, we can make room for all of you as long as you don’t mind sharing a room with my girls? My name is Leisa by the way, please get your sister and your friends, we have food to share.”
Ally did as she said and the four girls quickly returned to the home where Katie who was nine and a half as she adamantly told them, led them inside to the table. Ally and Gwen were nearly carrying Linny by this point and when Leisa saw this she shook her head.
“Poor girl, lets get her straight to bed. Katie, grab some stew for her.”
Leisa led the girls to a bedroom where Leisa helped them lay Linny on the bed sitting her up slightly with some pillows. Katie came into the room with a steaming bowl of stew. Katie sat next to Linny and slowly fed her a spoonful at a time. Leisa smiled. “My little Katie she’s a mother hen. Your sister will be fine, now you three come sit and eat.”
The girls did as she said with Ally taking one last look back at Linny where she saw young Katie gently wiping a drop of stew off the corner of Linny’s mouth.
