Death:
There are many themes about death throughout this novel, as it is a central part of the plot. Along with that, there are graphic depictions of death multiple times in the novel—whether that be in the form of brief flashbacks or directly in the main storyline.
Graphic Depictions of Violence:
There are many scenes that can get graphically violent. If you are uncomfortable reading anything gruesome like descriptions of somebody getting tortured, this might not be the story for you.
Mentions of Abuse:
From the start of the novel, it is established that the main character has been mistreated by her aunt. Later in the narrative, it is also strongly hinted that other characters have experienced some form of abuse, as well.
Light Cursing:
Most of the cursing is the occasional “hell” or “damn.” However, there are some instances where a character is about to say a worse word, only to be interrupted. Example:
“What the f—?”
“Finnley! Language!”
This is often played off in a comedic way.
Themes/Non-graphic Depiction of SA:
There is one scene where two of the female characters are approached by creepy men. They are dealt with before anything too graphic can happen. The way the characters cope afterward is very similar to how many people cope after assault. Even though nothing too explicitly s****l happens, this scene can definitely still be triggering or uncomfortable for many.
