Chapter 4

It’s finally the day of the annual Chancellor’s meeting. I descended from the carriage with confidence, my guards trailing behind me, their armor gleaming in the morning sun. The hues of crimson and gold danced upon my cape. It was embroidered by my most talented tailor, with the fierce emblem of our pack. Flames seemed to flicker and dance upon the fabric. I looked like a fire walking, going inside. As I strode forward, every eye in the courtyard turned toward me, their gazes filled with awe and anticipation. The castle guards, standing at attention, exchanged glances as I passed. Their eyes widened in recognition, the fire on my cape mirrored in their expressions. I ascended the steps of the castle, the doors opening before me, as if sensing my arrival. The grand hall beckoned, and looking at its opulent architecture, I knew the Chancellor was wealthy and has influence. But as I entered, I found myself drawn to the intricate designs capturing moments of triumph and valor. I quietly whispered to my Beta Isabella, as we stood outside the bathroom, planning our scheme. "I'm going to the bathroom first," I said, hoping she understood the significance of my words. Isabella nodded, her eyes sparkling with mischief. "I'll be standing outside, then." "No, you can go," I insisted. "Remember what I told you." She grinned mischievously, understanding our plan perfectly. "Fine," Isabella conceded, nodding at me. With that, I slipped into the bathroom, eager to execute our elaborate deception. As I retouched my makeup in front of the mirror, a faint sound caught my attention. Low moans echoed from one of the cubicles, and my curiosity piqued. I sighed, knowing I had to act quickly if I were to hear anything useful. My ears strained as I listened intently, hoping to catch a snippet of their conversation. And then, I heard it—my name spoken in hushed tones. "Lily, your mate, are you sure that you've killed her?" The words sent a shiver down my spine, and I froze, my hand hovering over my lipstick. "Yes, I did it with my own hands," came the chilling reply of a familiar man I knew before. "The silver bullets were ten times more lethal than any weapon. She is dead." The girl whimpered, and the man growled softly. The sounds coming from the cubicle left little to the imagination. My heart sank, and my eyes fixated on my own reflection in the mirror. The weight of their conversation hung heavily in the air. "I don't know, Daniel," Sunshine's voice trembled. "Something's still bothering me. I think I've seen her before." "What? You're being crazy again," Alpha Daniel scoffed. "I saw her dead body rotting in the forest after three nights of murder." "You sure, hmm?" "Yes, babe." Their conversation was interrupted by low growling of their intimate act and then the unmistakable sounds of their intimate encounter resumed. I couldn't bear to listen any longer. They were publicly f*****g inside the Chancellor’s comfort room. My mood was ruined, and I swiftly exited the comfort room, my mind reeling from the revelations I had overheard. Once outside, I quickly activated our mind-link. 'When I give the signal, do it immediately,' I communicated to Isabella, hoping she had picked up on the change in plans. With a determined stride, I made my way towards the conference room where the Chancellor awaited. As I entered the room, my previously cheerful expression had been replaced by a grumpy frown. Isabella looked at me with curiosity, no doubt wondering why my mood had turned sour. I avoided her gaze, not wanting to reveal what I had just discovered. Within minutes of my arrival, Alpha Daniel entered the room, his eyes fixed on Luna Sunshine. They exchanged glances, their body language revealing their connection. But before Daniel could catch sight of me, a thunderous explosion reverberated through the conference room, shattering the momentary peace. Everyone gasped and prepared themselves in their protective stances, their eyes scanning the surroundings for any signs of danger. As they braced themselves, I remained seated, manipulating my own shadow to create a replica of myself, which stepped forward, positioning itself in front of Alpha Daniel. "Lily!" he shouted, his eyes widening as if he had seen a ghost. I smiled sweetly at him, my voice barely above a whisper as I leaned in closer. "Hello, Daniel. How are you?" "No! This can't be real! You're already dead! How come you're alive! I already killed you that night!" he exclaimed in disbelief. "Hmm, killed. Tell me more about how you did it then," I taunted, savoring the mixture of fear and confusion in his eyes. "I shot you with silver bullets! This is crazy! Why are you... here? Are you even real?" His words spilled out in a rush, his voice laced with desperation. I moved toward him, wrapping my hand around his neck, squeezing the air from his lungs. Beta Isabella's power of persuasion held him in place, rendering him immobile. Isabella watched me closely, her eyes filled with curiosity, yet she refrained from questioning me. I admired her for that—she knew her limits. "Do you want me gone, Daniel? Do you want your mate gone?" I hissed, relishing in the terror that flickered across his face. "Yes! I already rejected and killed you! No way this is real!" he spat out, struggling to make sense of the situation. "Hmm, so you rejected and killed your mate... for that woman over there?" I pointed towards Sunshine, who was frozen in her seat just like the rest of the room's occupants. A tense silence settled over the room as everyone remained frozen, unaware of the illusion I had woven. The explosion had startled them, but only Daniel was fully aware of the chaos I had unleashed. "Just make sure she's worth it... worth more than me, because I don't want you begging for my attention. Soon enough, you will beg for your life. And I will not show you mercy. You will experience the excruciating pain of death slowly... until you beg me to end your suffering on the spot." Before Alpha Daniel could respond, I felt a piercing gaze, like emerald green eyes drilling into me from the illusion I had created. How could this be? In an instant, my illusion shattered, bringing me back to reality. Isabella cleared her throat, breaking the tension, and looked at me with concern. I nodded at her, assuring her that I was fine. "Alpha Daniel of the Charcoal Hiss's Pack, are you alright? You look like someone who has seen a ghost," Chancellor Alexander Ironclaw and his minions arrived, observing the aftermath of the explosion Isabella and I had orchestrated. None of them suspected our involvement, except for Alpha Dmitri. My heart skipped a beat as I laid eyes on him once again after a year. His presence is a mix of danger and captivating, his smile holding a knowing look that said, "I saw what you did in there." I clenched my jaw and averted my gaze from him. I knew all too well that Dmitri Silvano possessed the power of hypnotic persuasion, his charisma capable of bending the hearts and minds of others to his will. But I wouldn't allow him to do that to me. How did he manage to see the illusion I created? I c**k my head to the side and pouted my mouth. “Alpha Daniel, are you still in the room with us? Or you can just leave and I’ll give you a graceful exit. You’re blocking my way.” As the Chancellor's sarcastic remark drew laughter from those gathered in the council chamber, I found myself standing apart from the amusement that filled the air. My eyes remained fixed on Alpha Dmitri, who continued to gaze intently in my direction. It was an intensity that piqued my curiosity, prompting a raise of my eyebrow and a crossing of my arms in response. What is it that holds his attention so fiercely at me? Is he interested in me, or what? Alpha Dmitri, seemingly aware of my scrutiny, bit his lower lip and shook his head, as if trying to dismiss some internal conflict. I strained to catch his whispered words, "Impossible," though the meaning behind them remained elusive. Our seats were positioned adjacently, offering a close proximity that allowed me to observe even the subtlest of movements. I watched as Alpha Dmitri shifted on his seat, his muscles flexing with the effort to find a more comfortable position. It was a small detail, but one that spoke volumes about his restless state. The laughter around us subsided, and Luna Sunshine, ever the compassionate soul, immediately approached Alpha Daniel, concerned for his well-being. I, however, remained rooted in my spot, captivated by the enigma before me. Alpha Dmitri's gaze never wavered, his eyes locked onto mine with an intensity that seemed to transcend the casual acquaintance we had formed. There was an unspoken connection, a silent exchange of thoughts that tugged at the edges of my consciousness. I uncrossed my arms and leaned forward ever so slightly, daring to meet his unwavering stare head-on. What secrets lay behind those piercing eyes? The weight of his gaze and the tension that hung between us was undeniable. It was as if the air itself had stilled, the world around us fading into insignificance. In that moment, it was just Alpha Dmitri and me, locked in an unspoken battle of wills. In my peripheral view, I saw Alpha Daniel standing off to the side, his usually formidable presence diminished. Sunshine was attempting to coax some answers from him, but he remained unresponsive. My lips curled into a sly smirk as I observed the scene, sensing there was more to this situation than met the eye. But before the standoff could continue, a disturbance erupted at the far end of the chamber, jarring us both from our shared reverie. As the Chancellor's voice filled the air, my attention shifted to the center of the grand conference room. “Every year, all Alphas and Lunas from various packs gathered here for the annual commemoration of our achievements, a time to forge connections and establish new alliances. Today, we were to receive the report detailing each pack's accomplishments throughout the years. I, the Chancellor, would bestow my blessings upon those deserving while offering my sympathy to those who fell short.” While the Chancellor spoke, I felt Alpha Dmitir's intense gaze upon me. I met his eyes, my own curiosity piqued. He had always been a mystery, and his enigmatic nature only added to the allure. Raising an eyebrow in silent question, I murmured a barely audible "What?" as if daring him to reveal his thoughts. Alpha Dmitri merely smiled in response and leaned towards the man at his side, presumably his Beta. They exchanged whispered words, further intensifying my curiosity. Reluctantly, I tore my gaze away from him, knowing I had to focus on the Chancellor's words, though Dmitri's presence lingered in my thoughts. There was something about him, something magnetic and intriguing, that I couldn't shake off. It wasn't just his striking appearance or the commanding aura that surrounded him. No, it ran deeper than that… I had to bide my time, to play the game of alliances and power, and perhaps, in due course, recruit Alpha Dmitri as my new ally. I heard that he became the Alpha when his parents died. Despite being young, he managed the Crimson Red Pack all too well. I need to know him before this annual meeting ends.
