CHAPTER 2 – The Bad Dream

1601 Words
Carol’s POV “Ms. Carol, you are not eligible to celebrate the teacher’s day this time” I was standing in front of the Principal’s table and he seemed not cool like other days. I have never seen his face turned into a rotten tomato like this before. his tone was rigid and tough and looking at me like he was looking at a child who had done misconduct. “But Sir, why? What have I done? I didn’t break the code of ethics belonging to teachers of the school” I loved my job, I never considered it as a job. I worshiped my title as a teacher. It brought me a lot of joy when I moved with the kids. “Because you are….” The principal suddenly stood up from his chair and started to walk towards me. He was normal at the beginning, but later started to get bigger with a wider smile. The smile turned into a laugh, his thin lips started to plump like a pig and I slowly started to move back with my widened eyes. “Sir, wha..t is wr…ong with you?” I couldn’t imagine what was happening there in the office room. “You are…..” he walked closer to me while still getting bigger and when he became like an air balloon he popped into pieces. “Aaaaahhh” With a scream I woke up. It was a dream! Thank god it was a dream. My accelerated breath started to slow down when I realized that it was a dream. I was covered with sweat and the back of my night dress was stuck to the body because of the sweat. I took my mobile to check the time. It was 4.30 a.m. I sighed and kept the phone away dragging my body to the jug of water to have a glass of water. Why did I dream such an awful dream? The principal was never rude to me. What’s the meaning of that dream? Could be nothing Carol, you are overthinking. I took the Crutcher and got off the bed to walk to the washroom. The small dark room of mine was slightly illuminated by the lamp post on the street. It was enough for me to sleep without lighting any light in my room. I am very conscious about my expenses and never spend a penny on unnecessary things. Since I didn’t have time to start my sleep from the beginning I started to have a bath. I pulled a chair and sat under the shower. I can’t stand for a second without the Crutcher. I bathe every day sitting in this chair under the shower. I missed my home! the home where we three spent our beautiful time! I never had the opportunity to feel what family was until I met Kevin. My one true love of my life and we were completed by our son Daniel. I never thought that god was playing a game with me by giving me a lifetime of happiness for a little period of my life. I am in a rat hole now, where only the minimum facilities are available. I found this apartment needed a renovation. The owner was a greedy old lady. She never listens to the complaints made by the apartment people. She only grabs the money on time. I was thinking all this while sitting under the shower. The walls and the tiles were discolored and some wall tiles were broken. Unfortunately, this was the only apartment I found that suited my income. I don’t have plans and dreams in my life, I am just a living dead now! I pulled the bathroom toiletry cart closer to me to rinse my hair with shampoo and wash my body with body wash. I don’t run behind the brand names, I looked at the price tag and purchased what was cheap and available in the market at the time of purchasing. My eyes stopped at the last few sanitary napkins available on the cart. I need to purchase them today since my periods will come soon by today or tomorrow. I finished my bath came out of the bathroom and walked to pick a suitable dress for me. Today is October 1st and the 5th falls as a Friday which is World Teacher’s Day. I have few clothes, but I make sure them to wear neatly. I ironed my clothes for the entire week on Sunday, in case I got late to wake up, I wouldn’t get late for school. I picked a baby blue short puff sleeve high neck top and a plain black pair of trousers. I never wore skirts or dresses or any clothes that revealed my legs after the accident. I don’t want others’ attention to my leg, I want others to treat me as a normal person other than looking and giving me a sympathetic look. I tied my black hair into a high ponytail and applied a little makeup with a light color lipstick. I put on my watch picked up my handbag and walked to the kitchen. I took the pan and turned on the gas to make an omelet to have with bread. It was my usual breakfast and sometimes I take them as a lunch too. I break two eggs into a bowl and add a pinch of salt, pepper, chopped onion, and two teaspoons of milk and whisk them with a fork until it gives a good combination. I poured it into the greased pan on a low flame and applied some butter to the two sandwich bread slices. When the omelet was ready I transferred it to my plate and sat on the table to have it. I have enough time today to prepare my lunch. After having breakfast, I prepared a burger and a vegetable salad as my lunch and packed them. Suddenly my phone beeped when I was about to get into the elevator of the apartment. I checked it to find that it was a reminder saying that I had an appointment to meet a bank officer about applying for a loan to buy a vehicle. It’s going to be a hard conversation, this was the last bank left to try. The appointment is set for 2.00 p.m. I can come by the school bus for the Elementary kids since the bus was taking the same route. I reached the school by 7.10 a.m. and every student who met on the way to the staff room greeted me with a smile and a good morning. “Ms. Carol, good morning!” I heard the usual cute voice from behind making me stop and turned my head slightly to find that it was the cute Avin. “Good morning Avin!” I greeted him patting his head. Avin is an Indian kid. His father is a rich Businessman in the country. “Ms. Carol, you look beautiful today!” he started his chat praising me as usual. “Oh, Avin, this is not a new dress. You have seen this many times” I said while we both were walking towards the staff room. Avin must turn to the left side corridor of the staff room to reach his year three class. “I like baby blue Ms. Carol” his front teeth are fallen and it gave him a cute look with a cute accent. He reminds me of Dustin of Stranger Things with his toothless accent. “Listen, Avin. I am also coming in the bus today” I told him when I was getting closer to the staff room. “You mean in the school bus? That’s so cool Ms. Carol!” he jumped high with a laugh. “Yes, please ask the driver to wait for me if I get late for a few seconds,” I said. “Aye aye Ms. Carol, I won’t allow him to move a single tire without you” he did a salutation like a little seaman. “Now, go to the class!” I patted his head and he ran hanging his backpack on his back. The day went fast with the teaching and I was able to come out of the school on time to get into the school bus. “Good afternoon Ms. Carol!” the driver greeted me with a smile. “Good afternoon Mr. Samson. Today I am also your student” he gave me a small laugh. “Ms. Carol, here. Come and sit with me” Avin yelled as soon as he saw me. He reserved a seat for me next to him, but I made sure that everyone got a seat too. The journey was filled with giggles, laughs, and a lot of talk of the children. Spending time with them makes me forget my painful wounds. One by one students started to get off the bus and to my surprise, Avin was the last kid to drop. “Avin, are you the last one?” I asked with a surprise. “Yes, Ms. Carol. I am the last one who is getting off from the bus” he said with a smile. The bus slowly hit the break. I tilted my head to see that the police had stopped the bus.
