Chapter 3

“Let's go.” Samantha growled at the bodyguards. “Drive as fast as you can. '' Without waiting for the chauffeur to open the door, Samantha got in. She kept fidgeting, her eyes twitching from fright. “The cops? How? “ It seems her peaceful days are coming to an end. Jake isn't brave enough to involve the police in their past dealings, so how? She wondered. The driver seemed to notice the impatience in the aura Samantha exuded. He fired the gas pedal. They arrived within 15 minutes. Samantha got out of the car hurriedly. She approached the Policemen whose cars were parked outside. They seemed very confident from their stance and the look in their eyes when they gazed at her. Her status as the sole owner of Samantha's Haven. A restaurant for influential people is enough for cops to avoid her like the plague, talk less of her identity as Derek's wife. Their arrival to question her in Derek's house showed they obtained crucial evidence linking her to the human trafficking ring. She felt doom approaching even closer, making her shiver in fright. “Good afternoon.” Samantha put on a modest smile. “Mrs. Armstrong, we have come to arrest you on suspicion of involvement in the most tragic case of human trafficking two years ago” The oldest of the cops ignored her greetings, going straight to the point. To further taunt her, he played with his handcuffs in front of her eyes. The metallic sound made Samantha flinch. “On what basis?” Samantha saw they didn't come to play. She didn't dare take the matter lightly anymore. “Are you going to ask for a warrant? Are you aware that most guilty criminals ask for warrants before their arrests? Even your husband cannot save you from this.” the policeman smirked rudely, not giving Samantha any face. “I'm sorry, police officer. I have never been involved in a trafficking ring before. Therefore I cannot follow you unless you have a tangible reason, as you call it, evidence to summon me for questioning. I wouldn't adhere. You can leave now”. Samantha replied sternly. Her mind had been going through the possible evidence they could have. They didn't link to her in any way. If she refused to go with them, she would be safe. They most likely came as a result of Jake's taunting. “We have a witness, Mrs. Samantha. Someone mentioned your name, or should I say, Elsa? Someone else confirmed your identity as Mrs. Armstrong.” “Who? “ “It's an anonymous source. For security reasons, we can't divulge the name of our witness.” “There’s nothing I can do then” Samantha spun to leave. “Mrs. Elsa.” the policeman screamed, causing Samantha to flinch and stop in her steps. “Expect our arrival before the day ends. We will return with a witness and an arrest warrant since you love evidence. “ “Alright, I will be waiting” Samantha left for her room. She locked the door and threw her bag and jacket to the floor. Her limbs were trembling visibly. She grabbed her hair, and tears flowed down her eyes endlessly. Trying to think of solutions to fix the new problem, but her head is full, filled with a crime she could be called out for again. It never ends. An overwhelming feeling she could not handle alone descended on her. Only Derek could provide her with the comfort to push through. But she wouldn't dare confess her dirty deeds to him. It would mark the end of their days together. And that would be intolerable. A life without Derek is death itself. Pulling herself together, Samantha grabbed her phone and searched the dark web she hadn't contacted in 2 years. With her sharp memory, she managed to navigate through easily. She got an sms alert from ‘lone bird’ that caused her insides to overturn. “We have been busted. You are our insurance. Take all the blame, and your husband will be safe, Elsa. You must have noticed the security around him increased this past few weeks. That's because of our gift to you for leaving the ring without warning and hiding your identity. We occasionally send our elites after him. You don't want him to go on a journey of never returning, Do you? Just a little warning. “ “Don't you dare touch Derek?” Samantha replied. Cold sweat graced her forehead. They know Derek just went on a business trip, so they couldn't possibly be joking around. “Blame yourself, and make your husband safe. “ Lone bird logged out, leaving Samantha overwhelmed. Samantha woke up from her days in a few seconds and dialed Derek's number continuously out of worry, but he didn't answer her calls. She called over thirty times, yet there wasn't a response. Stricken with worry, she dialed his assistant’s number. But she didn't get any answer. It has never happened. In a meeting, Derek always leaves her a message if he doesn't answer her calls. She tried to stay calm because he might be on a plane. But his phone was ringing. The call went through! If he were on a plane, the calls wouldn't go through. Which means he never boarded the plane. Samantha lost the strength in her legs and fell to the floor, the impact causing her knees to bleed and reopening the clotting wound on her face. All of this pain paled in contrast to the kneading, sharp pain she felt in her heart. Her tears mixed with blood flowed endlessly, staining the white floor and her dress red. It was so unbearable she clutched her chest and screamed in anguish. Suddenly someone pushed the door open, Derek stood there like a knight in shining armor, every inch of his face laced with worry. “Samantha… my love “Derek broke down at the sight of her broken figure akin to a withered flower. The clean, innocent, rich, and luxurious aura she exuded turned sour, sorrowful, and painful. He took large strides forward and pulled her in his arms. Without a word Samantha broke down in his arms, bawling her eyes yet again. He must have heard of everything yet he didn't question her, again. This angel in human clothing, does she deserve him… she thought. “Derek, I-” “Not another word Samantha, you're safe now, relax In my arms, you're home now.” “Derek… “Samantha’s crying voice intensified. Her weak frame garnered pity from anyone that sees her. Samantha cried for over thirty minutes before falling asleep, Derek tended to her wounds and put her to rest. He gathered the bodyguards that followed her to the restaurant and fired every single one of them. He let them off easy because of Samantha. Their sole job is to protect Samantha, every single one of them is being paid more than the director of a company. If Samantha incurred even the slightest bit of wound, their existence itself is compromised. “Luke, look among the competent trainees in the military and find Samantha, a team of competent bodyguards. Before that, place a call to the commissioner of police, I don't want his boys lurking around my house again. “ His assistant was entrusted with new tasks as their meeting was postponed indefinitely. “Master, in this matter, it's a human trafficking case, the NIS appears to be on it, do I have to investigate further and furnish you with details?” “No, I'll hear from Samantha when she's ready, until then I don't want anyone near her, that's your job. “ “Okay,” Luke left to carry out his new task. Derek sat on his working desk in deep thought. After a few minutes, he took out a burner phone from his desk and sent a text. “How's the interrogation going? Brief me on the details tonight.” He checked the time and saw it was about time for Samantha to wake up. He asked the kitchen staff to prepare warm milk and light biscuits, then he took them upstairs for Samantha. Samantha opened her eyes slowly at the sound of the door, Derek took light strides to the bed and placed a gentle kiss on her forehead before helping her up. “Have here, warm milk and some biscuits, I learned you haven't taken breakfast today, dinner will be served when you're done. ‘ Derek brushed his finger against the tip of her nose dotingly. “Thank you” She smiled shyly like fresh cherry blossoms in spring. The previous pain in her eyes was nowhere to be seen. After snacking on milk and biscuits, Derek helped Samantha downstairs. As they got to the dining area, a household approached them hurriedly “The cops are here again young master” “The cops?” Derek inquired “Yes, this time they brought two cuffed criminals along with them! “ The old woman said anxiously. “Don't panic, gather all the workers inside, I'll clear the yards of cops in five minutes at most. Derek said reassuringly with his eyes on Samantha. She knew those words were for her. “I'll go with you Derek… please allow me” Samantha implored. “Let's go” Derek took her hand in his, taking a comfortable stride to the door as if he wasn't going to meet a policeman equipped with armor. “Good evening Mrs. Elsa, as promised, I came here with the evidence you asked for, although the warrant is still on the way, we can take things slow. "The rude police officer from before streaked Samantha an eerie smile, defying Derek's presence. Derek didn't appear to take offense, his arms around Samantha tightened and he pulled her a little behind him. “Mr. Smith?” Derek skims the police officer's name from his tag. “I believe you got a call from the commissioner stating you're not to step foot In my yard ever again, is it a trend among policemen to defy your superiors-now? Even at the risk of your jobs?” Derek threatened in a monotone. “Mr. Derek, I cannot ignore a criminal act, we managed to secure evidence against Mrs. Elsa and we are here to arrest her, if you stop us you will be arrested on grounds of obstruction of official duty”. “Official duty?” Derek laughed but it wasn't the cool spring-like soothing laughter, it was dark and bizarre like a bottomless pit. “Bulldozing into my house, causing so much havoc and fear within my employees and wife, you have so many guts. And what? Official duty? You're a measly detective so you might not be aware but orders are orders. If you want to keep your job, I'll give you the chance to leave now. “ “Mrs. Elsa, here is one of the workers affiliated with the trafficking ring, he was caught in the act and mentioned your involvement, do you still claim to be innocent?” Mr. Smith ignored Derek's warning. “I-” “Not another word Samantha, he asked for Mrs. Elsa, we don't have anyone like that here, you wouldn't say another word”. Derek admonished but Samantha was dying within, if the witness decides to talk all, half of her secrets will be out in the open. She clutched the hem of the jacket Derek draped over her shoulders and prayed inwardly. Derek didn't feel insulted at the presence of someone that didn't recognize his powers and influence. He had been briefed on the way that Mr. Smith was a corrupt official that was demoted to the lowest rank and is trying to boot-lick his way to the top. He probably caught a whiff of Samantha's involvement in the case and thought he had caught a big fish, Derek. He probably hoped to use Derek's influence to raise his ranks again but he played the cards wrong. He shouldn't have used Samantha to cut a deal with Derek. Derek stood all tall and mighty, gazing down at the corrupt seemingly righteous cop doing his work. He had an expression of “you're about to face your doom” A few seconds after, a car pulled up in front of the mansion, the commissioner of police alighted and ran even with his weak old knees. At the sight of Derek he went down on his knees immediately. “Mr Derek please forgive this ignorant and greedy worker of mine, I will be sure to give you a satisfying answer before the end of today.” the old man pleaded. “Boss, she's a criminal i-” “Keep quiet, not another word! Seize him”. The commissioner signaled to the other policemen to grab Mr. Smith. “Elsa, are you just going to hide behind your man, have you forgotten our old good flowery days? You loved it. Seeing those little kids cry for their parents while we beat the sanity out of them until they went numb and mute from the pain. Surely wealth hasn't made you forget the excitement from before, right?” One of the cuffed criminals suddenly spoke up, and everywhere turned silent in an instant. Samantha turned stiff immediately, everyone turned toward her expecting an answer.
