The Assigment

387 Words
Sam Six months ago… “Samantha Côté!” I heard my mother yell to me from the end of the hall. “What on earth are you still doing here? Did the elders not call on you?” her annoyance was clear on her face and frustration clear in her tone. “Yes mother, I was. I just don’t see why they’ve chosen me…” I said, matching her frustration. “You know exactly why they have chosen you. Now that you have come of age and all of your talents have come out, you are a clear choice. You have inherited the site from your father which will serve you well, unlike incurring their rath.” the emphasis on the last word sent chills down my spine. The elders rarely asked much of us, but when they were disappointed a price was always paid, it was the way among those with fae blood. That was what i had been called for, summoned to be assigned to some far-off place and given six months to find at least one other member of our kind. Our numbers had been thinning over the years, and the small hidden cities that we still had contained less with the ability to use real magic, and more humans that had blended with us. I was being sent by the elders to find those that were referred to as “the forgotten”, who are typically fae blood that ended up in the care of humans with no idea who or what they are. “My meeting with them is in the chamber this evening…” I sighed out with resignation. “I know this seems like a lot my love, but we all must do our part”, she brushed my hair behind my ear and looked into my eyes. That look held so many emotions, unyielding love, pride, hope, and just a touch of sadness that I could feel was for me leaving. I wrapped my arms around her and held her tight to me. I knew that when I got my assignment tonight, I would only have a week left with her before I would be off on my own for the first time in my life. This is going to be a very long year.
