The Discovery

Sam Present-day The moment our eyes met, I could feel the pull of her energy. She was of magic, I was sure of it. After a moment of us simply staring at each other and her not saying a word, I decided to try the tongue many of us used to identify ourselves. “Quod tu es?” I asked, her brow furrowed and confusion crossing her face. She clearly didn’t know the tongue. “I’m sorry…I’m afraid I don't speak any foreign languages” she said softly with a note of sincere apology. “No worries, it was just a little greeting that we use where I’m from” I replied with a laugh and a shrug, trying to brush it off. If this girl didn’t speak our language, that meant that she might be exactly what I was sent to find. But if she had been raised in a human family, then I would need to earn her trust before busting out with crazy magical ranting and attempting to get her to return home with me. “Oh, alright then” she giggled softly back at me. “So, do you live around here?” I asked. “Unfortunately not, I live about two hours north actually” she responded with a rueful half-grin. “I’m a bit new to the area, but I’m actually in the same direction” I tried to keep my excitement under control. ”I’m in Bloomington, how about you?” “Normal” I had to hold back a chuckle at the irony, but her slight look of amusement told me that my eyes gave me away. “What’s so funny about that?” she quipped. “How about we just say…that you most certainly don’t look like a normal girl” I replied with a shrug. “Oh? And what does tha-” she started to ask but was distracted by a tall blonde guy walking toward us. “Mia! You’re going to miss my toast!” he yelled when he was finally only a couple of feet away. “I’m sorry! I’ll be there in a minute!” she yelled back. “I’m sorry, I have to get going. Tonight is my little brother's big night and I promised I wouldn’t miss his big toast” she giggled again as she started to turn and walk away, but paused for a moment to turn back. “Maybe I’ll see you again some time,” she said with a smile. “Oh, I’m sure you will” I smiled back. As she turned and made her way down the path and back to the party. I didn’t have a plan yet, but I was certainly going to need to do a little fire scrying tonight so that I could make sure to “bump into” her again.
