Beep, beep, beep! My alarm went off and pulled me from what felt like the sweetest dream. In my morning haze, I looked at the clock on my bedside table and hit the button to silence it. I had to blink a few times. 6:50 a.m. My sleep-fogged mind processed the information slowly. Morning, time to get up. I must have slept through most of my alarms again…
Reluctantly, I dragged myself out of bed and headed toward my kitchenette. The smell of freshly brewed coffee filled my tiny studio apartment, and I was thankful that I had been smart enough to program the coffee pot the night before.
As I reached into my kitchen cabinet for a mug, I couldn’t help but let out an exasperated sigh. Today was going to be a long day. My younger adoptive brother, Mark, was graduating from college today. This meant a long ceremony and a two-hour drive both to and from the celebration tonight. I was least excited about seeing our parents. They adopted me when I was a baby after struggling for years to get pregnant, and those first five years were wonderful and full of love. When they found out that my mother was pregnant, my entire world suddenly revolved around my little brother. They were still good parents, but the strong reminder that I wasn’t biologically theirs put a lot of strain on our relationship.
“Meow!” my kitten added as she watched me pour and blow on my coffee.
“Oh yeah? Are you in for a long day too, Bella?” I asked.
“Chirrup!” she replied as she rubbed against my leg before heading to bed for another of her long naps. Bella had been a gift from my landlord, Ms. Lydia, one that brought a constant smile to my face.
Once I finished my morning coffee and it had started to work its magic, I decided it was time to start getting ready for the day. Heading to the bathroom, I turned the water on, and set it to warm up while I ran and grabbed my favorite blue dress, black ankle boots, and a towel before running back and jumping into the steaming water. All I had to do was get through the day.
