I gathered all of my things and went downstairs with them. I grin as I observe uncle John stuffing his face while he retrieves some chocolate chip cookies from the kitchen cabinet. I ask him, "How's it going, Chippy?" as he turns around with a platter of cookies and a cookie in his mouth. One is gulped down before being placed on the platter. He grabs frosting from the fridge and adds, "Don't call me that; why is it that you make nicknames for me on whatever I do, little witch?" I smugly shrug my shoulders and settle down on the table, pulling out a pen and my journal. When I jot down in my journal, I begin speaking aloud so that my uncle can hear me. "Dear, diary. I feel like Uncle John has an obsession since he keeps coming in and snatching our chocolate chip cookies while we're not looking, forcing us to buy more because it's my dad's favorite. He knows it is and annoys my father by devouring the entire batch.” John looks at me with wide eyes and grabs my pen from me fiercely. "Take that page off Nia," he orders. He rolls his eyes playfully and hands me back my pen as I chuckle and tuck my journal away in my backpack. “I don't steal, I borrow!”, he exclaims. "Yeah right," I say and pick up my phone as he moves to the living room. In their party attire, Aunt Belle, Mom, and Dad descend the stairs and dash into the kitchen. My mother turns around and asks, "So how do we look?" while Aunt Belle’s dress flows. "You two look gorgeous, and dad, really? A black shirt and basic pants? You could have done better”, I say. He scowls and gives me a tight hug that almost smothers me. He continues, "You know it hun, your dad here, looks good in everything, it's about time you're going to realize, where do you think you get your genes?" I roll my eyes and brush him off, me and Belle are giggling, and he enfolds my mother in a kiss. My mother claps her hands and says, "Alright, everyone, get in the car, we'll drop Nia off at Maya's." "Well, mom, I think I'll go walking, it's not a long way," I quip, and she nods while giving me a worrisome look. She grabs my face and demands, "You get everything?" I murmur, "Yes, mom," as she squeezes the sides of my face. She asks, "Your phone, charger, sweater, and you have me as an emergency contact." I gently pull both of her hands down while reassuring my mother, "Definitely, mom, I have everything. Don't worry about it." "Just to make sure, we're leaving; be careful!” My mother says as she leaves, "Good luck, pumpkin. I love you”, my dad says as he gets in the car. John says, emotionlessly, "Bye," and Belle waves to me before entering the vehicle. I stand next to the doors waving goodbye as they all drive away. I heave a sigh of relief and shut the doors behind me. While I stroll through the nearby park, I put on my earbuds and plug in my phone. I'm at ease right now because of the chilly, windy night. I was excited by the smell of nature until I felt a presence behind me. I don't turn around to look behind me, but I quicken my speed because I can feel someone following me. I sense that they are human because of the smell of their fresh blood. I was suddenly pulled away from my backpack by a hand, and in a flash I grabbed their wrist and yanked it firmly away. "Wow, hey, what's up with you? You've always had that firm hold on you”, I swiftly release my hold and sigh deeply as he grins. Evan, Maya's twin brother, was there, a brown-haired boy who was as tall as ever, dressed in two layers of jackets, a beanie, and a silly grin. I roll my eyes and go on my way. I comment, "You terrified the heck out of me Evan, I thought you were a kidnapper," as he quickens his step to match mine. He smiles nervously and explains, "I just thought I'd walk to the neighborhood park, Maya informed me you were coming so I decided to wait till I saw you pass by. I smile and say, "You creep," laughing a little. "Well, I was just trying to scare you, and besides, we have the entire summer to ourselves in the months you have left before transferring to that school, what are you going to do?”, He says, rubbing his hands together while wearing gloves. I answer, "I don't know, I'll work it out. I might spend some time with you and Maya, you two are my best friends anyways. And I guess I'll spend the rest with my family, we need to be prepared." "Best friends, huh," he murmurs, "yeah, but are you really sure you even want to attend to that school? Why on earth are you even going there? Isn't that just for the gifted and talented?”, He asks, shivering from the cold. I wasn't sure whether to be offended by his joke or to laugh it off. I can be very talented thank you very much. His term "gifted" refers to students with great intelligence and talent. Our gifted refers to being a witch with magical talents in the supernatural world. Nevertheless, I couldn't tell Evan that because he is a human and we need to keep our identities hidden from them. Alternatively, the hunters might return to our town. If there haven't been any killings or vampire sightings, some residents of the community don't see the need to go hunting. "I don't know, I got the invitation, the school seemed great and interesting, so I figured I should go," I shrug. He whines and drapes one arm around me. "But! You have family and friends here", he says. “Not something you'd want to leave behind, would you? Would you?", he softly inquires. I give him a smile while narrowing my eyes at him and reply, "I wouldn't, but I have the summer and Christmas break to come visit, isn't that right?”. “Yeah, certainly”, he says, "Me and Maya will miss you”. I nod, and we both arrive at his home at last. We open the door, and Maya rushes down the steps while keeping her fingers apart and avoiding touching. My best friend, she has curly dark hair who wears it up in a messy ponytail. She is quite attractive and has dark brown eyes. "Nia! You came! I'm sorry about my brother; he left the house the moment he heard you were coming”, She adds as she hugs me and kisses me on both cheeks. As I raise an eyebrow to glance at Evan, he looks down and begins to flush with shyness. "Let's go to my room now, please! Tea must be spilled!", she exclaims. After Evan went to the kitchen for snacks, she dashes up the stairs, and I follow after her, saying goodbye to him. She crosses her knees as she sits cross-legged on her bed and blows on her fingers, jiggling them. I remove my backpack and join her in reclining on the bed. "So? They left again, did they?”, Not averting her gaze from her nails, she continues. "Yes, and they didn't take me again because they know I’m 15. I could still enjoy myself without alcohol. Right?”, I say, placing a hand on my chin and putting a frown on my face. "Believe me, my mother does the same thing; in fact, she is currently in the Majestic Pub with your mother. And she's supposed to be on duty at this hour; in fact, someone is probably being murdered right now while she's out having a good time”, she exaggerates, blowing on her nails once again. As you can see, her mother is the sheriff of Majestic Creek. "Well, you might be right, but at some point, we have to let them to enjoy themselves. Just in their late 20s, my parents and my aunts. No children are preventing them from doing this”, I add, and after getting her nod of agreement, I bring up my phone and open i********:. Maya sighs, but she continues to blow on her nails. "Why did you redo your nail polish? You don’t look good in green”, I tell her bluntly, grasping her hand. “Hey, rude, well, it seems like green is particularly your color, have you ever worn green?”, she asks, picking up her green nail polish and putting it in front of her face while squinting her left eye. I lay down on her bed and say, "Never, I always feel like green is not a nice color. It may be gorgeous, but never in a million years will it look well on me. I glance up at her and she replies, "I think you should try it, it suits your eyes." We chuckle, but as our laughter wanes, she suddenly becomes solemn. She changes the conversation by saying, "So... about that school you're going to." Curled up in her blanket, I groan and say, "Maya, I already told you, I'm not changing my mind, I feel like this school will really help me." "I am aware, but how will it be of help to you? learn to draw and develop your artistic talent?", she mutters belligerently. I murmur, burying my face in her pillow, "It's a private school, getting an invitation is like getting into your future college, that's right, it doesn't happen very frequently.” She removes the pillow from my face and remarks, "I don't know how it's ANY different from Majestic Creek High, just saying, here, the whole town knows you.” I groan, attempting to gather myself, "And I don't know them, why would I stay for people I don't know?" She whines, "But you know me and Evan, come on, we've been friends since we were hatchlings!" "It's not like I'm leaving for good; I promised to come see you. In addition, I get to attend school with you for a month before I transfer”, I tell her, and nudge her shoulder. She adds gently with a frown on her lips, "I guess that would be good before you depart, It's just that I'll truly miss you Nia." I say, "Don't look at me like that; I'll miss you too," and I hug her on the side. She inhaled as soon as she sees my necklace and her eyes widen. "It is so lovely! Is that a brand-new necklace? It shares your ring's family crest!”, she says, touching it. She jerks her hand away when I playfully slap it on it. I add, "Just like my ring, this one is special; nobody touches it but me, got it?", and she raises her hands in surrender. "You don't get too much jewelry, do you? I'm just saying it was nice. You must be doing this for the third time. Like when your ring mysteriously melted and you freaked out, staying in your room in the corner for who knows how long until your mother returned? ", she asserts while laughing. "Hey! That ring was special. I needed it", I say turning away while recalling my very first daylight ring. With the worry of being tortured with the heat of the sun. Even though I won’t die, it’s like being in the hot desert. She told me, raising an eyebrow, "It's okay, you will get a new one later, your family is wealthy." I can only roll my eyes playfully. Wealthy, are we? I believe? Simply said, my fathers side of the family have accumulated a sizable amount of savings over many generations. Since their father was affluent and died of old age, they received his will and continued to save money till now—so I believe I would classify us as wealthy. I remark as I gaze at the blue gemstone, "This time, this necklace isn't going anywhere, it's special." After her nails have dried, she rolls her eyes and picks up her phone. We watched movies all through the evening. Every so often Evan would join us, but Maya would yell at him and eventually kick him out. After that, my time here kind of flew by.
