Chapter 1: My Quiet Life

1149 Words
Aurora POV “You brought who home for dinner?” My voice cracked as I gaped at my son. My dark curls framed a face etched with exhaustion, my eyes narrowing in disbelief. Ethan leaned casually against the doorframe, his teenage smirk growing wider. “Relax, Mom. It’s just Elijah. He’s my best friend. You’ve met him before.” “Elijah Blackwood, the Alpha of the Silverfang Pack?” My heart skipped a beat, though I masked it with a frown. Wiping my hands on my apron, I shot him a sharp look. “Since when does an Alpha need to come here for dinner?” Ethan shrugged, his tone nonchalant. “Since I’m his best friend, and he’s tired of eating alone in that huge estate of his. You said we should be kind to others, remember?” I sighed, setting down the bowl I had been mixing. Ethan had a way of using my words against me. “Ethan, he’s... different. He’s an Alpha, for heaven’s sake. Our lives aren’t... the same as his.” “Mom, stop overthinking it.” Ethan’s expression softened as he approached me, placing a reassuring hand on my shoulder. “He’s just Elijah to me. He doesn’t care about titles or status. Besides, you always say I need more friends.” I opened my mouth to argue but stopped when a knock echoed through the house. My pulse quickened. I smoothed my apron and gave Ethan a look. “Fine. But you’re doing the dishes.” “Deal,” Ethan said, flashing me a grin before heading to the door. As he opened it, I caught my first glimpse of Elijah Blackwood in over a year. The Alpha stood tall, his dark hair slightly disheveled from the wind, and his sharp blue eyes scanning the room with an intensity that made me shiver. His presence was magnetic, commanding, even without trying. “Hey, Ethan.” Elijah’s voice was deep, calm, and steady. Then his gaze shifted, locking onto me. “Mrs. Montgomery,” he greeted, his lips curving into a polite smile. My breath hitched. “Elijah. Welcome,” I said, my voice faltering slightly. For a moment, the room seemed too small to hold his energy. Elijah’s gaze lingered on me, studying me with a curiosity that made me feel exposed. I quickly turned away, busying myself with the dishes to hide the flush rising to my cheeks. “Smells amazing,” Elijah said, stepping further inside. “Mom’s cooking is the best,” Ethan chimed in proudly. I forced a smile and turned back to face them, holding a ladle like a shield. “I hope you’re hungry. I made enough to feed an entire pack.” Elijah chuckled softly, his voice carrying a warmth that softened his commanding presence. “I’ll do my best to live up to the challenge.” We sat around the small dining table, the conversation flowing easily between Elijah and Ethan. I remained mostly quiet, focusing on serving food and trying to ignore the unsettling awareness of Elijah’s presence. “So, how’s training going?” Ethan asked, shoveling mashed potatoes onto his plate. “Tough, but good,” Elijah replied. “Your techniques are improving. You’re one of the best in your class.” My ears perked up. “Training? You’ve been training with the Alpha?” Ethan shrugged, avoiding my gaze. “Yeah. Elijah’s been teaching me combat techniques and strategy. It’s not a big deal.” “Not a big deal?” I set my fork down, my tone sharp. “Ethan, you could get hurt. Why didn’t you tell me?” “Because I knew you’d freak out like this,” Ethan shot back. “I’m not a kid anymore, Mom. I can handle myself.” “Mrs. Montgomery,” Elijah interjected, his calm voice cutting through the tension. “Ethan’s doing exceptionally well. I wouldn’t have him train if I didn’t think he could handle it.” My gaze darted to Elijah, my chest tightening at the reassurance in his tone. His eyes held mine, steady and sincere, and for a moment, I didn’t know how to respond. “Thank you,” I said finally, my voice quieter now. The rest of the meal passed in relative peace, though I couldn’t shake the tension that lingered in the air. It wasn’t just Elijah’s commanding presence or the way he seemed to fill the room—it was the way my body reacted to him, like some deep, unspoken part of me recognized him. As we finished dinner, I stood to clear the plates. Elijah rose too. “Let me help,” he offered. “You don’t have to,” I said quickly, but he was already gathering plates. “I insist,” he said, his tone leaving no room for argument. In the kitchen, the air grew heavier as we worked side by side. I kept my focus on the dishes, but I couldn’t ignore the heat radiating from him. “Ethan talks about you a lot,” Elijah said suddenly, breaking the silence. I glanced at him, startled. “He does?” Elijah nodded, a faint smile playing on his lips. “He admires you. Says you’re the strongest person he knows.” My hands stilled, and my throat tightened. “He’s... all I have,” I admitted softly. Elijah’s expression shifted, a flicker of understanding passing through his eyes. “He’s lucky to have you.” Our eyes met again, and something unspoken passed between us—a spark that left me feeling both exhilarated and unnerved. Ethan’s voice from the other room broke the moment. “Hey, are you guys done in there? Elijah promised to show me that new move tonight!” I blinked, the spell broken. I quickly turned back to the sink. “Go on. Don’t keep him waiting.” Elijah hesitated for a fraction of a second before nodding. “Thank you for dinner, Mrs. Montgomery. It was wonderful.” “Call me Aurora,” I said before I could stop myself. Elijah’s lips curved into a small, genuine smile. “Aurora,” he repeated, the word lingering in the air like a promise. As he walked away, I leaned against the counter, my heart racing. Something about him unsettled me in ways I couldn’t explain. And the way he had looked at me... it was as if he saw right through my walls. In the living room, Ethan and Elijah’s laughter echoed, a reminder of the normalcy I desperately clung to. Yet, deep down, I knew my quiet life had just been irrevocably disrupted. When I returned to the living room, Elijah’s piercing gaze met mine again, and for a brief, electrifying moment, I felt a strange spark—one that left me questioning everything I thought I knew about myself.
