Chapter four—The silent proposal

726 Words
Isabelle returned to her mother’s ward, her heart still pounding from the collision earlier. She pushed the door to her mother’s ward open, relief washing over her when she saw her mother was still sleeping. Isabelle set the torn bag of medicine on the bedside table and sat down in the chair close to the bed. She held her mother’s hand gently .” I’ll fix this mummy.” she whispered.”I’ll find a way I promise.” Just then, a nurse opened the door and came inside the room.”Miss Bennett? The Billing office asked to see you. It’s urgent.” Her heart trembled, she knew why they were calling her. She gave her mother one last look, tucked her blanket, and followed the nurse to the billing office. The billing office door was half open, she knocked on the door and she was asked to come in. The office smelled of ink and dust mixed with a faint smell of disinfectant. A woman with glasses— Madam Cecilia, was seated, flipping through a file. She looked up and adjusted her glasses.” Miss Bennett,” she said. Please sit.” Isabelle sat down, clutching her bag to her stomach. “Your mother’s bill is long overdue. And the doctors have recommended additional tests for her, which cannot be done unless you make a substantial deposit. The hospital will be forced to discharge her if you don’t make the necessary payment soon.” Madam Cecelia’s words pierced through Isabelle like glass. How would her mother get treatment if she were thrown out of the hospital? She can’t let that happen. “P— please just give me till Friday.” She stammered. I’ll find the money I promise.” Madam Cecelia sighed, her expression softened a little.”There is an ongoing charity fund, and I’ll apply on your behalf. But it’s very small and not everyone is approved. But you still need to bring something.” Isabelle nodded weakly.” Please put in the request, I’d really appreciate that. Thank you so much, Madam Cecelia.” What Isabelle didn’t know was that someone had just heard her conversation with Madam Cecelia. He didn’t mean to eavesdrop, he just happened to be passing by, and when he saw her through the glass window, he decided to wait and listen. Jayden saw how desperate and helpless she sounded, so he started calculating. An idea popped into his head. He had only come to check up on his younger sister, Amaya, who had just recovered from surgery at the hospital. She had smiled at him earlier and was so happy to see him. As he listened to Isabelle’s pleading voice, it stirred something in him but he didn’t let it show because he rarely let his emotions show. “Run a background check on her”, he said to His assistant, Ethan. “ Ethan looked surprised. “Her, sir?” “Yes, name, background, everything about her.”He ordered. “Yes sir.” Ethan nodded. Jayden walked away from the door, his mind not leaving Isabelle’s pleading voice, and how tired and desperate she sounded. Just then, his phone rang. He pulled it out of his pocket and saw the name flashing across the screen— his father. His hand tightened on the phone, he didn’t want to talk to him, but he still picked up anyway, to hear what his father had to say. “Jayden”, his father’s voice blasted across the speaker.”Why are you wasting time? I’m done waiting. If you don’t get a wife soon, I’ll make sure you lose everything. The company and your inheritance, I’ll take them away from you and give them to someone more competent”.His father’s harsh voice echoed through the phone. Jayden gnashed his teeth.”You’ll take what’s rightfully mine just to force me into marriage?” “You leave me no choice. The company needs a responsible person, and I’ll be sure of that once you get a wife. You either fix or lose everything.” The call ended suddenly, leaving only silence. Jayden stood frozen on the spot. He hated his father, he hated how he wanted to control his life. But one thing was clear, he had to act fast so he wouldn’t lose everything.
