Chapter 13

1248 Words
Vanessa opened the door to reveal Alex, the man who had made it clear that he wasn’t going to just disappear from her life. Alex stepped inside with the same confident air he always had, his sharp eyes glancing over at Ethan before he turned to Vanessa. She could feel the weight of their unspoken exchange, the tension thick between them. “Vanessa?” Alex said softly, his voice smooth and composed. “You called for me?” Vanessa gave him a small nod, then turned to face Ethan, who was looking more and more uncomfortable with every passing second. “This is my boyfriend,” Vanessa said, her voice firm, clear. She didn’t flinch. She wouldn’t. “This is Alex. Now, I suggest you leave, Ethan. Because I’m done with you. And this—” she gestured toward Alex—“this is my future now.” Ethan stood frozen, his face a mask of disbelief, but Vanessa didn’t look back. She didn’t need to. She had moved on, and no one—least of all him—was going to pull her back into the past. Vanessa had hoped that the encounter with Ethan would finally put an end to the manipulative cycle he’d tried to drag her into. But standing there, the tension thick between them, it was clear that Ethan wasn’t going to let go so easily. He stood in the middle of her apartment, disbelief etched all over his face, his voice tight with frustration. “You’re lying,” he repeated, almost like a mantra. “This isn’t your boyfriend. You’re just saying that because you’re upset. It’s not possible.” Vanessa’s chest tightened as she tried to keep her composure. She wasn’t about to back down now. “I’m not lying, Ethan. I’ve moved on, and this is my boyfriend now.” Ethan’s eyes flicked toward Alex, and the recognition was instant. “You,” he spat, narrowing his eyes. “You’re the one she’s with now?” Vanessa took a deep breath, and before she could speak, Alex stepped forward, his body language exuding confidence. “Yes. I’m her boyfriend,” Alex said firmly, his gaze never wavering from Ethan’s. Ethan’s jaw clenched. “This is a joke, right? You’re just playing along with her little game, aren’t you?” Alex didn’t even flinch. He was calm, collected, the complete opposite of Ethan’s frantic energy. “No, I’m not playing any games. I’m her boyfriend. And I’m here to make it clear—if you don’t stop bothering her, I’ll make sure you regret it.” Vanessa’s eyes widened slightly. She hadn’t expected Alex to take it this far, but there was something reassuring in the way he was handling this. He wasn’t just protecting her—he was standing up to Ethan, who had spent the last few years trying to control her life. “You’re threatening me?” Ethan’s voice dripped with disbelief. “You think you can intimidate me? I’m a respected architect! You’re just a small-time businessman.” Alex smirked, and it sent a shiver down Vanessa’s spine. “I don’t think you understand, Ethan. You don’t get to dictate what Vanessa does or who she’s with anymore. If you don’t stop bothering her, I’ll make sure it’s the last mistake you ever make. Your little firm won’t survive the fallout.” Ethan’s face twisted with fury, but he didn’t respond. His gaze flickered between Alex and Vanessa, his pride wounded by the audacity of the man standing before him. Vanessa stood still, her heart racing in her chest. She couldn’t believe the way Alex was handling this—how easily he had stepped into her life, taken control of the situation, and made Ethan realize just how insignificant he had become. And then, without warning, Alex stepped closer to Vanessa. He wrapped an arm around her waist, pulling her into him in a way that felt natural, as if it had always been this way. His lips brushed against her ear as he whispered, “Let’s make sure he gets the message, shall we?” Before Vanessa could even react, Alex leaned in and kissed her. It wasn’t a gentle kiss—it was firm, possessive, a statement of ownership. He was making sure Ethan understood the truth. He was making sure Ethan knew that Vanessa was no longer available for manipulation. When the kiss broke, Vanessa’s breath caught in her throat. She hadn’t expected that, but the moment felt like closure. Ethan, the man who had once been the center of her world, was now nothing more than a distant memory. Alex pulled away just enough to look into her eyes, his expression softening. “You’re done with him, Vanessa. Let him go.” Vanessa didn’t say anything at first. She didn’t need to. The message had been sent. Ethan stood there, stunned, his face pale with fury and disbelief. Without another word, Alex turned to Ethan, his expression cold and commanding. “Now, get the f**k out of my girlfriend’s house,” he said, his voice firm and filled with an edge that made the air between them crackle with tension. “And if you ever dare to come back, I’ll make sure your little firm goes under. You won’t have a place to run to.” Ethan froze, his face reddening with rage, but Alex didn’t flinch. He stood his ground, making it clear that Vanessa was no longer his to control. The power dynamic had shifted, and Ethan was now the one at the receiving end of it. Vanessa, still stunned by the rawness of Alex’s words, felt a strange sense of liberation. She had never heard anyone speak to Ethan like that before—least of all someone who had barely known her. But Alex wasn’t just anyone. He was protecting her, setting boundaries that she hadn’t been able to set herself for so long. “Don’t you dare come back,” Alex repeated, his tone like steel. “If I see you anywhere near her again, you won’t get off so easily. You’re done here. Now leave.” Ethan looked like he was about to argue, his eyes blazing with anger, but he seemed to realize that there was no point. He had no leverage here. Vanessa wasn’t his to control anymore. Alex had already made that crystal clear. With a final, frustrated growl, Ethan turned and stormed out, slamming the door behind him with enough force to shake the walls. Vanessa stood frozen for a moment, the aftermath of Ethan’s exit leaving the room heavy with silence. She turned to Alex, her heart pounding not just from the confrontation but from the kiss that still lingered on her lips. “Alex…” she started, but her voice trailed off. She wasn’t sure what she wanted to say. Alex looked at her, his confident demeanor softening. “Are you okay?” She nodded, though her emotions were a tangled mess. “I didn’t expect you to… handle it like that.” “I wasn’t going to let him intimidate you,” Alex said simply, his voice steady. “He needed to know that he doesn’t have power over you anymore.” Vanessa’s gaze dropped, her thoughts swirling. Alex had stepped in when she needed him most, but his actions had stirred something inside her she hadn’t been ready to confront. “Thank you,” she finally said, her voice quiet.
