Chapter 14

Earlier... Alex was sitting at his desk, sorting through the endless stream of emails that came with managing his business. Yet the sudden ring from his phone broke his concentration. Glancing at the screen, his brows lifted in surprise when he saw Vanessa’s name. He picked up the second ring. “Vanessa?” Her voice came through, smooth but with an undercurrent of something else—something lighter, almost teasing. “Hi, honey. Can you come over? Someone wants to meet you.” Alex leaned back in his chair, confused for a second, but then the faintest smirk pulled at his lips. The use of “honey” caught him off guard, but he played along. “Someone wants to meet me? Should I be worried?” Vanessa gave a soft laugh, though Alex could hear a subtle edge to it, like she was trying to mask her true emotions. “You’ll know when you get here,” she said. He paused, his instincts prickling. “Vanessa, is something wrong?” "OK, honey? I’m waiting.” Before he could press further, the line went dead. Alex stared at his phone, confusion flickering across his features. He replayed the conversation in his head, trying to piece together what she wasn’t saying. Vanessa was confident, independent—a force of nature. Whatever had made her call him and use that tone wasn’t just casual. Seconds later, her apartment address popped up in his messages. Without thinking much, Alex pushed his chair back, grabbed his jacket, and went out the door. Whatever was going on, Vanessa clearly needed him to show up. ------ Alex exhaled slowly, as if the whole ordeal hadn’t even phased him. He turned back to Vanessa, his gaze softening. “You okay?” Vanessa didn’t answer immediately. The whirlwind of emotions inside her was too much to sort through. Relief, disbelief, and a faint glimmer of something she hadn’t felt in years—hope. She let out a slow breath, grounding herself. “I’m fine,” she said, her voice steady for the first time that evening. “Thank you for playing along.” Alex gave her a small, reassuring smile. “You don’t need to thank me,” he said, his tone calm but firm, as though this was the most natural thing in the world for him to do. Vanessa nodded, her heart still racing, but it felt different now. The rapid beat wasn’t out of fear or anxiety—it was something else. She felt lighter, like a weight she hadn’t even realized she was carrying had finally been lifted. “I didn’t expect you to do that,” she admitted, her voice quieter now. “But it felt like... the right thing. For once, I didn’t feel like I was the one being manipulated.” Alex stepped closer, his movements measured, careful not to invade her space. There was something about his presence that was both grounding and reassuring. “You don’t need to be controlled by anyone, Vanessa. Not him, not anyone,” he said, his voice low but steady, each word laced with conviction. Vanessa lifted her gaze to meet his eyes, and for the first time in what felt like forever, she saw sincerity—unwavering, unshakable sincerity. She’d heard words of encouragement before, but they had always felt hollow, like people were just saying what they thought she wanted to hear. But with Alex, it was different. He wasn’t trying to make her feel better; he was simply speaking the truth as he saw it. “I think I’m starting to believe that,” she whispered, almost to herself. A small, genuine smile tugged at Alex’s lips. He reached out, his movements slow and deliberate, and gently placed a hand on her shoulder. The touch was light, unassuming—a silent promise rather than an intrusion. “Good,” he said simply. Vanessa felt the warmth of his hand through her sweater, and for a moment, the world seemed to still. There was no chaos, no lingering shadows of Ethan’s manipulations, no doubts about whether she deserved to move forward. Just this moment. “I know it’s easier said than done,” Alex continued, his tone soft but resolute. “But you don’t need to worry about him anymore. He’s gone for good now, Vanessa. I’ll make sure of that.” Vanessa’s lips parted as if to respond, but the words caught in her throat. She wasn’t used to this—to someone not just stepping in but stepping up, not for their own gain but for her sake. It was almost overwhelming, but in a way that felt strangely comforting. “I don’t even know what to say,” she admitted, her voice barely above a whisper. “You don’t have to say anything,” Alex said, his smile faint but warm. He dropped his hand from her shoulder, respecting her space, and took a small step back. “You’ve already done the hardest part.” She tilted her head slightly, curiosity flickering in her eyes. “What’s that?” “Taking back control,” Alex replied. “Standing up to him. You don’t need to thank me for showing up tonight. I didn’t do anything you couldn’t have done on your own. You’ve got more strength in you than you realize.” Vanessa felt her chest tighten—not in a painful way, but in a way that made her want to believe him. Could it really be true? Could she finally let go of the years she had spent feeling trapped, powerless? “I’m not so sure about that,” she admitted, a small, self-deprecating laugh escaping her lips. Alex’s expression softened, but his voice held firm. “You will be,” he said. “It’ll take time, and that’s okay. Just don’t let him have any more of it. Your time belongs to you now.” The words hit her like a wave, crashing over her and washing away the doubts she’d been clinging to. She had spent so long second-guessing herself, letting Ethan’s words and actions dictate how she lived her life. But Alex was right. She didn’t have to live like that anymore. “I guess I’ve got a lot to figure out,” Vanessa said, a faint smile tugging at her lips. “You’ll get there,” Alex said confidently. “And if you need someone to remind you along the way... you’ve got my number.” Vanessa chuckled, the sound surprising even herself. It wasn’t a forced laugh, but a genuine one—the kind she hadn’t felt in years. “Thank you,” she said, the weight of the words carrying more than just gratitude. Alex nodded, his gaze lingering on her for a moment longer. Then, as if sensing that she needed space to process everything, he took a step toward the door. “I’ll let you get some rest,” he said. Vanessa watched as he reached for the door, her heart swelling with a mixture of gratitude and something else she couldn’t quite name. “Alex?” she called out just as he opened the door. He turned back, his hand resting on the frame. “Yeah?” She hesitated for only a second before offering him a small, sincere smile. “I’m glad it was you I called tonight.” Alex’s smile widened, just enough to show the warmth in his expression. “Me too,” he said simply, before stepping out and closing the door behind him. Vanessa stood in the quiet of her apartment, the echoes of the evening still lingering in the air. For the first time in a long time, the silence didn’t feel suffocating. It felt... peaceful.
