Chapter 5

1244 Words
The next fifteen minutes felt like hours. Vanessa leaned against the brick wall of Bella’s café, her arms wrapped around herself, trying to steady her nerves. The USB drive Bella had promised was her key to closure, and she wasn’t going to back down now. The adrenaline from her earlier triumph with Lowe’s Corp. had not yet faded, but it was now intermingled with a simmering resolve to confront the other looming issue in her life: Ethan. Vanessa’s mind flashed back to the moment she stepped out of Lowe’s sleek corporate offices. The presentation had been a resounding success. Claire Donovan, the poised head of project development, had personally walked her out, speaking enthusiastically about next steps. The excitement of knowing her innovative design would come to life filled Vanessa with pride. Yet, beneath her professional triumph, there was a nagging ache she couldn’t ignore. The tension in her personal life demanded resolution, and she’d promised herself she wouldn’t let anything hold her back—not anymore. The faint sound of tires screeching pulled her from her thoughts. Bella’s car came to a halt in the small parking lot, and she stepped out with a determined expression. In her hand was a small USB drive that seemed almost insignificant, yet held the truth Vanessa needed to confront Ethan once and for all. “Got it,” Bella said, handing the drive to Vanessa. Her voice was steady, her gaze filled with support. Vanessa swallowed hard, her fingers closing around the device. “Thank you,” she murmured. Bella tilted her head, studying her friend carefully. “Are you sure you want to do this now? After everything today, maybe you should give yourself a moment to celebrate.” Vanessa shook her head, her resolve unwavering. “I can’t let this linger. I need to close this chapter before I can move forward. Today is about new beginnings.” Bella nodded, her expression softening. “Alright. Do you want me to come with you?” “No,” Vanessa replied firmly. “This is something I have to do alone. But thank you—for everything.” Bella reached out and squeezed her hand. “Call me when it’s over, okay?” “I will,” Vanessa promised. She slipped the USB into her bag, took a deep breath, and walked away with purpose. Later that evening, Vanessa sat in the living room of the apartment she shared with Ethan. The space, once filled with memories of laughter and shared dreams, now felt cold and suffocating. The award plaque she’d received earlier sat on the coffee table, a stark reminder of what she was fighting to protect: her self-worth and her future. When the door finally creaked open, Ethan stepped inside. His jacket was slung over his shoulder, and he wore the same easy smile that had once charmed her. But tonight, it only made her stomach churn. He froze when he saw her sitting there, her laptop open on the coffee table. His smile faltered. “Hey,” he began cautiously, setting his jacket down. “You’re home early.” Vanessa didn’t respond immediately. Instead, she gestured to the screen, where the paused footage from Bella’s café illuminated the dim room. Ethan’s carefree demeanor shifted to one of unease. “We need to talk,” Vanessa said, her voice calm but firm. Ethan frowned, his steps hesitant as he approached. “Sure. What’s going on?” Without a word, Vanessa hit play. The video showed Ethan at Bella’s café, leaning far too close to another woman. His laugh was audible, his hand brushing against hers in a way that was unmistakably intimate. The footage left no room for misinterpretation. Ethan’s face paled as he watched. “Vanessa, I can explain—” “Don’t,” she interrupted, her voice sharp. “I gave you chances to explain, and you lied every time. This?” She gestured to the screen. “This is the truth I needed.” Ethan stepped forward, his hands raised in a placating gesture. “It’s not what it looks like. She’s just a friend, I swear—” “A friend?” Vanessa’s voice cracked, but she held her ground. “A friend you meet in secret, call by pet names, and laugh with like I don’t exist?” Ethan’s mouth opened and closed, but no words came out. His usual charm, the excuses that had worked before, failed him now. Vanessa stood, her heart pounding in her chest. “I’ve worked too hard, sacrificed too much, to let you drag me down with your lies. I’m done, Ethan.” “Vanessa, wait!” he pleaded, his voice desperate. “We can fix this—” “No,” she said firmly, cutting him off. “You’ve already ruined it. You can pack your things and leave. I don’t want you here when I get back.” Ethan stared at her, disbelief and frustration warring on his face. But Vanessa didn’t wait for him to respond. She grabbed her coat and walked out the door, the cool night air hitting her face as she stepped into the street. Vanessa wandered aimlessly through the city, her mind racing. The weight she had been carrying for months felt lighter, yet the ache of betrayal lingered. Her triumph at Lowe’s Corp. had been a turning point, but confronting Ethan was a necessary step to truly move forward. She couldn’t afford to let anyone—especially someone she once loved—hold her back. Eventually, her steps brought her back to Bella’s café. The warm glow of the lights inside felt like a beacon, a reminder that she wasn’t alone. Bella greeted her at the door, pulling her into a tight hug. “How did it go?” Bella asked softly. Vanessa sighed, the tension in her shoulders easing slightly. “It’s over. I told him to leave.” Bella pulled back, studying her friend’s face. “And how do you feel?” Vanessa considered the question for a moment. “Free. Sad, but free.” Bella nodded, understanding. She guided Vanessa to a table and placed a steaming cup of tea in front of her. “You did the right thing, Ness. You deserve so much better.” “I know,” Vanessa said, her voice steady. “And for the first time, I believe it.” The two friends sat in comfortable silence, the hum of the café’s activity a soothing backdrop. Vanessa stared out the window at the city lights, her mind turning to the future. The pain of ending her relationship with Ethan was real, but it was outweighed by the possibilities ahead. For the first time in years, she felt like she was in control of her life. She thought of Claire Donovan’s words earlier that day: “We’re thrilled to have you on board, Vanessa. Let’s talk about how we can make your vision a reality.” That was what mattered now. Her vision, her future. She had spent too long compromising, too long doubting herself. Now, she was ready to embrace the opportunities she had worked so hard to create. As the night wore on, Vanessa’s resolve only grew stronger. She knew the road ahead wouldn’t be easy, but she was ready to face it. She wasn’t just surviving anymore—she was thriving. And nothing, not even the ghosts of her past, could stop her now.
