Chapter 12: The truth comes out

Lizzy had been quiet for days, observing everything carefully. Ever since she discovered that Rita was the one behind the fake article that ruined her reputation, she had been thinking of the best way to expose her.
She didn’t want revenge.
She wanted the truth.
And she wanted everyone to see it.
The opportunity finally came on the next school announcement day. The entire university gathered in the large hall as usual. Students filled the seats, talking and laughing while waiting for the announcements to begin.
Ada sat beside Kemi, her heart beating fast for reasons she couldn't explain. Lizzy sat a few rows away with Lexi, Jaden, Charles, and Rose.
Then Lizzy stood up.
At first, the students around her murmured in confusion. The hall slowly became quiet as she walked toward the front.
She requested permission to speak.
The microphone echoed slightly as she began.
“A few weeks ago,” she said calmly, “something very embarrassing about me was announced to the whole school.”
The hall immediately grew tense.
Everyone remembered that day.
Lizzy continued.
“That announcement destroyed my reputation and almost ruined my dream of becoming a journalist. It also destroyed the friendship between me and someone who means the world to me.”
Her eyes briefly met Ada’s.
Ada’s chest tightened.
“But I recently discovered that the person responsible for that announcement was not Ada.”
Students started whispering loudly.
Lizzy then pulled out printed evidence — messages, records, and proof that the article had been manipulated before reaching the announcement board.
“And the person responsible,” Lizzy said firmly, “is Rita.”
Gasps spread across the hall.
All eyes turned toward Rita, who sat frozen in her seat. The confidence she once carried disappeared instantly.
Students started murmuring angrily.
“How could she do that?”
“That’s terrible.”
Rita tried to stand and defend herself, but the evidence was too clear. She couldn't deny it anymore.
Ada felt tears filling her eyes, but this time they were tears of relief.
Finally, the truth had come out.
Lizzy walked back toward her and without saying a word, Ada stood up and hugged her tightly.
The hall burst into whispers again, but Ada didn't care.
Her best friend was back.
Ada’s Birthday
The next day was Ada’s birthday.
After everything that had happened, she expected it to be a quiet day. She planned to simply attend classes and maybe eat dinner with Lizzy.
What she didn’t know was that her friends had something much bigger planned.
Kemi had secretly organized a surprise party with Lizzy, Lexi, Jaden, Charles, and Rose. Because many of them came from wealthy families, they decided to host the party at one of the most luxurious apartments in Lagos owned by Kemi’s family.
The apartment overlooked the city lights and was decorated beautifully with balloons, lights, and flowers.
Music filled the air as guests arrived.
When Ada walked in, the lights suddenly turned on and everyone shouted:
“SURPRISE!”
Ada froze in shock before bursting into laughter.
“Oh my God!” she said, covering her face.
Lizzy ran over and hugged her.
“You deserve this,” she said.
The night quickly turned into an unforgettable celebration. They danced, laughed, and shared stories about everything they had survived over the past months.
For the first time in a long while, Ada felt completely happy.
Kemi’s Surprise
Later in the night, the music softened and Kemi walked toward Ada.
In his hands were flowers and a small gift box.
The room slowly became quiet as everyone realized something special was about to happen.
Kemi looked nervous, which surprised everyone because he was usually so confident.
“Ada,” he began, “this year has been crazy for all of us. But through everything… you stayed strong.”
Ada looked at him quietly.
“You lost friends, people doubted you, and yet you never stopped being kind.”
He handed her the flowers.
“I admire you more than you know.”
He then opened the small box, revealing a beautiful bracelet.
“Ada… will you be my girlfriend?”
The room erupted into excited whispers.
Ada felt tears forming in her eyes again.
She smiled and nodded.
“Yes, Kemi.”
The room exploded with cheers and applause as their friends celebrated around them.
An Old Friendship
Later that night, while people were still dancing and eating, Tunde walked into the apartment.
His eyes immediately found Kemi.
The tension between them was still obvious.
He walked up slowly.
For a moment neither of them spoke.
Then Tunde sighed.
“I was angry,” he admitted. “But I shouldn’t have ended our friendship the way I did.”
Kemi looked at him carefully.
“I thought you betrayed me,” Tunde continued. “But I realize now I didn’t even try to understand the situation.”
There was silence before Kemi nodded.
“We both made mistakes.”
They shook hands, finally letting go of the anger between them.
The Apologies
Later that night, Rita and the group of girls who once turned against Ada and Lizzy arrived.
They looked uncomfortable.
One of them stepped forward.
“We were wrong,” she said quietly. “We believed lies and treated you terribly.”
Rita looked ashamed but remained silent.
Ada took a deep breath.
“I forgive all of you,” she said calmly.
They looked relieved.
“But forgiveness doesn’t mean we can go back to being friends.”
Her voice wasn’t angry.
It was simply honest.
And everyone understood.
Graduation
Months passed quickly.
Life slowly returned to normal for everyone.
Ada and Lizzy’s friendship became stronger than ever. Their group—Kemi, Lexi, Jaden, Charles, and Rose—became inseparable.
And Ada and Kemi’s relationship grew into something beautiful.
Finally, graduation day arrived.
Families filled the hall as students wore their gowns proudly.
When Ada, Lizzy, Kemi, Lexi, Jaden, Charles, and Rose walked across the stage, the crowd cheered loudly.
They had all graduated with flying colours.
Standing outside afterward, holding their certificates and laughing together, they realized how much they had been through.
