Chapter 3: The Unexpected

Abigail POV I closed my eyes and prayed for some good news. “Let it be good news, God.” I prayed silently. I can't remember the last time I went to church but here I am praying for good news. Ever since my graduation three years ago, I have been job hunting from one industry to another. I even applied for internships but had no success. Being jobless has made me the caretaker of the house because Linda is always busy with work. The only job I had was a shift in a library, which was voluntary community work. I don't even get compensated for it. I only go there once a week. And then, I slowly tapped on the mail, hoping it would be good news. I read the first sentence and stopped midway where it says, ‘We are sorry. You have not been selected…..’ I flung my phone aside and hissed before burying my face into my palms. Just then, the doorbell sounded ding-dong. Who could it be at this hour? Or was it Jonathan? No, he will not come here right now, he will be at work. Linda had already left for work. My mind spirals into different thoughts. I stood up and walked out of my room. I got to the parlor and picked up the umbrella by the coat stand just in case I had to protect myself. And then tip toe towards the entrance door. I peeped through the door hole, my heart beating fast. My mind relaxed after I saw who it was. It was Cynthia, my best friend. She walked past me like she owned the house. We have been together ever since we were kids in elementary school. But as they say, you meet your best friend through a fight. Cynthia and I weren't friends back then. We were in the same class. She is stubborn and outspoken. One time we had a coloring class, and she broke one of my coloring pencils. We fought as kids and even refused to speak to each other until our class teacher, Mrs. Anderson noticed and settled everything between us. She asked us to work together, giving us homework that would force us to work together. And that's how we became friends. “Girl, you owe me an apology,” says Cynthia as she settles into our worn-out cushion. I walked straight to the kitchen without answering her. I opened the fridge trying to get something to prepare. I haven't eaten since last night. Cynthia walked into the kitchen, “You still haven't told me where you disappeared to last night?” She asked, grabbing the stool by the counter. “But wait, what were you thinking of doing as you held the umbrella?” She asked mockingly. “Well, you can never tell.” I replied, walking towards the bread toaster to toss some bread. “You aren't serious, right?” She asked, arching her brows. “I have been watching crime and crime scenes lately,” I say, the ding sound from the toaster interrupts us. “I am just being careful, Cynthia.” I added, placing the toasted bread on a plate, walking towards the kettle that was already hot to brew coffee. “Anyway, that's not why I am here.” She says, picking bread from the plate. “Tell me everything, what happened last night, did anything happen?” She asked, but her tone sounded as if she knew something about last night. “Wait…” I turned and looked at her shockingly. “Cynthia…did you leave work and come down here all to hear what happened?” I was shocked. “Whatttt?” She says with a mocking smile on her lips. “I need to hear everything.” She winks at me. I poured the hot water from the kettle into two cups of coffee powder. I picked it up and handed her one of them. “So tell me…” she sips her coffee, her mouth filled with the content. “I can't believe I did all that…” I say, taking a bite of the toasted bread. “I have never touched Jonathan's body or his dick.” Cynthia's eyes popped wide open in shock. “You haven't….” She let out a mocking laugh loudly, almost choking herself as she coughed and tried to control her laugh. I rolled my eyes. “He made me suck his d**k, but it was an experience I will never forget.” I say. “He blew my mind away with the way he licked every part of my pussy.” The memory of it flashes back into my mind again, making me feel an electric sensation down my virgina. “You really enjoy him, don't you?” Cynthia asked, her voice a bit calm. I nodded my head and sipped my coffee. I felt happy and smiled to myself as if I had won some lottery. I was already thinking of looking for him again tonight at the same hotel. Maybe he will come back. “Well, I am happy for you…” says Cynthia as she takes another sip of her coffee. She set the cup down and stood up from her seat. “I should get going now. See you later tonight,” she says and walks out of the kitchen. I took a sip of the coffee and felt full already. I placed my two hands on the counter and bowed my head, feeling the weight of everything weigh in my heart. I walked out of the kitchen and went to pick up Windel's food from the cupboard. She stays in the backyard in her little cage. I was about to step out into the backyard when my phone beeped again. I had left my data on. I checked my phone and saw an email notification. My heart skipped a beat when I saw it. I quickly swapped my phone open and clicked the mail. | Dear, Abigail Scot. We are pleased to inform you…| My heart was already beating fast in my throat. I felt some heat rush in my spine as my breath increased. |...that you have been offered the position of secretary in NEXUS Industry.| My heart almost exploded out of my chest. I can't believe what I just read. I have to keep rereading the email over and over. I can't wait for Linda to be back so I can share the news with her. But wait a minute. How did… I didn't apply for a job with NEXUS Industry, so how come I was sent the offer? It wasn't even a mistake, because my name was mentioned. Or is this a prank?? NEXUS Industry is one of the most successful industries in the country and the number one leading industry in electronics. Whatever it is, I will find out.
