My chest heaved violently as I looked at the two of them, my eyes bloodshot red with rage, wishing I could tear them both apart alive.
Lachlan snapped back to his senses, a trace of panic flashing across his face.
"I'll go back with you."
"No."
My voice was hoarse as I refused him, my fingers trembling as I dialed my supervisor.
The reason I still hadn't gone home was because the year-end bonus my supervisor mentioned had still not been paid.
These past few days, I kept opening my bank account to check, but there were never any new transfers.
My mother needed medical treatment.
The medicine had been thrown away by Linnea. At least I had to take money home. I couldn't possibly return empty-handed.
The call was quickly picked up.
I spoke urgently, "Mr. Brooks, when will the year-end bonus be issued?"
"The year-end bonus had been processed by Finance on the 8th. Didn't you receive it?"
My mind exploded into a loud ringing, and I couldn't react for a long time.
Then I heard my supervisor continue.
"I just asked Ethan from Finance. He said it had already been paid out. Did you not check carefully?"
One thing after another made my mind unable to function properly.
After hanging up, I forced myself to calm down.
I contacted the bank's customer service, and they sent me the transaction details.
The year-end bonus had already been transferred away, and even the transaction records had been deleted.
The only person capable of doing something like this... I lifted my head, holding my phone as I stared at Lachlan.
"You took my year-end bonus."
Lachlan averted his gaze guiltily, then hardened his expression and said, "Yes, I did."
My lips trembled as I screamed.
"Give it back! That's my mother's life-saving money!"
Lachlan impatiently pressed his lips together.
"It's gone."
At that moment, Linnea stepped forward and stood in front of me, smiling faintly.
"I've been making some investments recently," she explained. "Lachlan just borrowed your 7,381.32 bucks for now. We agreed that if there are profits, we'll split them fifty-fifty... If it's lost, don't worry," she added. "I'll pay you back."
Their shameless words made me laugh in anger.
I clenched my fist and swung it hard toward Linnea.
"What will you pay me back with?" I demanded. "My mother is relying on this money to survive! You threw away her medicine, and now you're stealing her money too?! Why?" I cried. "Why?!"
I grabbed Linnea by the hair, no longer caring about dignity.
Lachlan's face turned pale instantly. He shoved me to the ground and roared, "Are you crazy?! Is this really such a big deal?!"
I wiped my face and could barely stand. Ignoring them, I dragged my suitcase out of the bedroom, ready to leave.
The front door was half open.
Lachlan saw me dragging my suitcase and immediately grabbed me.
He grabbed my arm and blocked my path. "Where are you running off to?" he demanded. Gesturing toward Linnea, he added, "Look at what you did to Linnea... Apologize!" His expression softened slightly as he continued, "Admit your mistake, and I'll consider going home with you after Christmas."
"She deserved it!" I gritted my teeth and slapped his hand away. "Lachlan Blackwell, do you really think I can't live without you? Did I ever say the person I was bringing home for Christmas was you?"
Lachlan straightened his neck and shouted back,
"Who else could it be? Isn't your sick mother eager to see her future son-in-law before she dies?!"
At that moment, a familiar yet unfamiliar voice came from outside the slightly open door.
"The person she's bringing home is me, and the person she wants to marry is also me. Any problem with that?"
Lachlan's face turned deathly pale as he snapped his head toward the sound.
