CHAPTER 1 Life is said to be too short when you fail, to plan but long enough when you plan early. My name is Roland, I'm a young man of 22 years old, and up till now I'm still regretting the wrong choice I took. It all started when I was just 3 years old of age, my dad was a prominent rich businessman, but died in a plane crash while going for a business trip with his colleagues, and my mom died as a result of heartbreak when she heard that my dad was late, and since then I became an orphan and life has always been so hard and unbearable for me. Since I was too small, I was sent to live in my grandmother I stayed with my grandmother till when she died, I was only seven years old, and from then I started moving from one houses to another, my uncles and aunties started changing me from one house to another, then my suffering had just begun I was then pushed to live with my uncle my father's senior brother, who had taken my father's wealth and promise to take care of me. Things went well for the first two years of my arrival at my uncle's place after the 2 years by this time I was 9 years old and things started changing when it was time for me to register for my first school leaving certificate, my uncle, said he had no money to register me and his son together that I should stay back and maybe register next year, I had no problem with that because I understood him but his wife to took it like another thing she then urge me to hawk so I can get money to register for the exams On the very cool Tuesday morning while I was Hawking I met a man and he asked me why I was Hawking during school hours, but I told him my auntie told me to sell for her so I can get money to pay for my exams. But the stranger told me it wasn't proper for a kid like me to be hawking during school hours and he then decided to follow me home I arrived home with the stranger and my uncle's wife welcome me with a slap for not selling or her goods before I came back she then turn to the stranger and said to him, "you're welcome please who are you" but the stranger did not give her any response at all, all what he did was to make some phone calls and then after when he was done he removed a card and show to her I did not know which type of card it was cuz I was still a kid then, the only card I knew that had that shape was an ATM card then the stranger said "woman as you have seen in the card I'm a human right fighter and I have come to give a warning to stop maltreating this boy" he said and instantly there was a car horn coming from the gate they gate man opens the gate I saw a car different from my uncle's car maybe my uncle had bought a new car with my father's money I said to myself not until I saw some men carry out a big basin of Garri for my uncle's wife, at least I will eat 3 cup of Garri for 3 days instead of for 1 week they brought out water and put it in the Garri and give it to her to drink all, she started drinking and all of the sudden she started crying, I was wondering why my uncle's wife will be crying why eating instead of smiling. she started begging the men to forgive her that she was going to register me in the public school but they all disagreed and said she should register me in the same school her children is attending three hours later my uncle came back from work just to see a basin of Garri in front of his wife and some strange faces, and his wife was crying "what happened honey why are you crying" my uncle question his wife "is it not because of this your evil nephew he has finally succeeded in spoiling my identity to the world" she answered my uncle and his wife pleaded for they to forgive her yes she was surely forgiven. The next day I was admitted in the same school with my uncle's last two children I was in the same class with my uncle's last child in school, my cousins were still taking me like their slave I did not blame them because that's how their parents brought them up. I was not allowed to go to the sitting room when their lesson teacher is around so he would not carry me along. my uncle and his wife were looking for all means that their children will beat me up academically. thier lesson teacher usually do their class assignment but I do mine myself and even gets a better grade than them in the assignment and even in the terminal exams my first term in the school I came out 3rd why my uncle son came out 9th my uncle blame me for not taking his son along For those few period of time I was given a normal, love, care, as a kid should receive I was loved by my uncle and even his wife I was very happy and I felt like a kid who had parents, sometimes I even forget the fact that I had no parents, I had so much attentions from my uncle and even his wife I was then allowed to sleep in the children's room and not in the servant room. On my 10th birthday again the tragedy stroke, it's all happened from my health, I became very ill and I was taken to the hospital for treatment the doctor said I had a kidney failure and the amount for the treatment was 500,000 naira. my uncle paid the money at least money wasn't a problem and I was treated. when I arrive home after i have Spend 2 weeks in the hospital already, my auntie started developing a new form of hatred out of jealousy all because my uncle paid 500,000 naira for my treatment. because of the hatred she had for me she was able to make my uncle refuse to pay money for my exams registration. When my uncle refused to pay the money for my exam registration evil stroke him, he had the worst lost in his business my uncle and his wife still never wanted to register me for the exams then it was 2 days for the registration to expire so many thoughts round on my mind I first thought of organizing people to come and rub my uncle then I now thought of stealing money from my auntie because she was the person who discouraged my uncle from registering me for the exam. On a Saturday morning when everybody was in the dining table eating breakfast I refuse to eat I told them that I wasn't hungry that I want to go to the room and have some rest I was permitted to exit from the dining table and I when straight ahead to my uncle's room I already knew where his wife usually keep her money so as soon as I enter the room, I went straight to her makeup drawer and I was lucky to see 25,000 naira which was even more than the money I needed I took it and I retired to my room immediately and pretend sleeping. On Monday when my uncle was about taking my cousins to school I told him I will also love to join everybody was surprised because I never wanted to go to school again since my uncle told me he will not be paying for my exam fee. we arrive at the school as soon as we school I was very happy same as my teachers "I heard you were sick so how are you doing now" they asked, to all of them my response was just a smile the went straight to my headmistress office and she was also surprised to see me then I gave her the 25,000 naira for my registration but she returned 15,000 naira to me and she said to me where did you get this money from, instantly my heart skipped like a ram on a hill my uncle gave it to me to come and pay for my exams, "but your uncle said he will not register you this year until next year because you are sick" she replied me. when I got back home that day I was wondering the excuse I will give to my uncle and his wife the day the exam will commence I was thinking where I will tell them I'm going to that they will believe me and allowed me to go Just then my uncle's wife started shouting, Nancy, Nancy, Nancy, where is this stupid girl, Nancy was a house help she Rush directly to my uncle's room I didn't know what they were discussing or talking about the only thing I knew that happened was that Nancy came out from my uncle's room crying, I knew what happened that my uncle's wife had accused her of stealing the money 2 minutes later I saw Nancy carrying her bags and leaving the house still crying, "what happened to her my uncle's last child" question but I didn't even answered him because I felt so sorry for Nancy but I couldn't go and tell the truth because indeed the truth is bitter.
