Chapter 6: "Sidelines and Spotlight"

I kicked the soccer ball with precision, feeling the rush of adrenaline as it soared through the air. Practice was my sanctuary, my escape from the drama that seemed to follow me everywhere. Caleb appeared beside me, his eyes gleaming with excitement. "Hey, Asher! Heard about Avery and Julian?" I raised an eyebrow, intrigued despite myself. "What about them?" Caleb grinned. "They're hooking up, apparently. I tipped off The Insider, and now it's all over social media." My expression darkened, annoyance simmering beneath the surface. "That's messed up, Caleb. You had no right to do that." Caleb shrugged, unfazed. "Hey, someone's got to keep the gossip mills turning. Besides, it's not like I made it up." I shook my head, disappointment etched on my face. "You're better than that, Caleb." Meanwhile, Avery and Remi were leaving school, Remi chattering excitedly about a fashion show. "Avery, you have to come with me! It'll be so much fun, and it'll take your mind off The Insider's post." Avery's eyes narrowed, her jaw clenched. "I don't know, Remi..." Remi's expression turned persuasive. "Come on, Avery! It'll be good for you, I promise. We can go tonight." Avery's shoulders sagged, resignation written across her face. "Fine... I'll go." As Avery arrived home, her mom was waiting, her expression stern. "Avery, where were you last night? You didn't sleep here." Avery's defenses flared, her voice rising. "I slept at a friend's house, okay? And I'm fine, Mom. I don't have a problem." Her mom's expression remained skeptical. "Avery, I know you're struggling. You need help." Avery's eyes flashed, anger and frustration simmering beneath the surface. "I don't need help, Mom! Just leave me alone." "You're not a child anymore, Avery," her mom said, her voice firm. "You need to take responsibility for your actions." "I am taking responsibility!" Avery shouted. "You just won't listen." The argument continued, with neither side willing to back down. Later that night, Avery and Remi attended the fashion show, Avery's stress momentarily forgotten as they watched the models strut down the catwalk. As they sipped champagne and mingled with the guests, Remi nudged Avery. "Look, there's Asher!" Avery's eyes followed Remi's gaze, and she spotted Asher walking towards them, looking ridiculously handsome in a fitted jersey. Avery raised an eyebrow as Asher approached. "Well, well, well. Look who's modeling now." Asher's smile was polite but distant. "Just a one-time thing." Avery shrugged. "You look...interesting." and walks away. Remi chimed in, "So, Asher, what brings you here tonight?" Asher replied, "Just signing a contract for a modeling gig. Nothing too exciting." Remi smiled. "That's cool. I've been to so many fashion shows, but I love the energy of this one." Asher's eyes widened slightly. "You're a fashion regular, huh?" Remi laughed. "You could say that. My mom's a designer, and I've grown up attending shows all over the world." Asher's expression turned impressed. "No way. That's really cool." Remi nodded. "Yeah, it's been an amazing experience. But sometimes it feels like I'm just going through the motions." Asher's gaze turned thoughtful. "I know what you mean. Sometimes I feel like I'm just pretending to be someone I'm not." Remi's eyes locked onto Asher's, a spark of understanding flashing between them. As they chatted, Asher's thoughts drifted to the recent Insider post. He felt a pang of guilt, knowing his friend Caleb was responsible for tipping off the Insider. Remi glanced at Asher, noticing his distant expression. "Hey, everything okay?" Asher quickly recovered, forcing a smile. "Yeah, everything's fine. Just a little tired." Remi nodded, seeming to accept his explanation. But Asher couldn't shake off the feeling of unease, knowing he was keeping a secret that could hurt someone he barely knew. Remi settled into her plush bed, exhausted from the fashion show. As she reached for her phone to set the alarm, a message popped up on her screen. "Spotted: Remi, socialite sweetheart, in a compromising position. Looks like someone's been hiding secrets... Stay tuned for the video that will change everything. Hearts & Hellos, The Insider" Remi's heart sank as she read the message. That video. She knew exactly which one The Insider was talking about. Her mind racing, Remi quickly texted Avery. "Hey, can you come over tomorrow morning before school? I need to show you something. It's urgent." Remi's nerves were on edge as she waited for Avery's response. She couldn't believe The Insider had gotten their hands on that video. And just when she was starting to think she might actually like Asher... Remi's thoughts swirled with anxiety as she tried to calm herself down. Tomorrow, she'd confide in Avery and figure out a plan. But for now, she was trapped in a nightmare of her own making.
