Avery trudged through the front door, her eyes cast down at the floor. She knew she was in trouble.
Nilani, Avery's mom, stood in the living room, her arms crossed and a look of disappointment etched on her face.
"Avery, we need to talk," Nilani said, her voice firm but controlled.
Avery sighed and dropped her bag on the floor. "What's up, Mom?"
Nilani's eyes narrowed. "Don't play dumb with me, Avery. I know all about your little visits to your father."
Avery's eyes widened in surprise. "How did you...?"
Nilani cut her off. "I saw the picture, Avery. The one of you at the rehab center. I should have connected the dots, but I was too blinded by my own fear."
Avery took a step back, feeling a mix of emotions: guilt, shame, and defensiveness.
"Mom, I can explain..."
Nilani held up a hand. "No, Avery. Let me finish. I'm disappointed in you, not just for seeing your father behind my back, but for not trusting me enough to tell me the truth."
Avery felt a lump form in her throat. "I'm sorry, Mom. I didn't mean to hurt you."
Nilani's expression softened slightly. "I know you didn't, sweetie. But you need to understand why I'm so worried. Your father's addiction almost destroyed our family. I don't want to see you follow in his footsteps."
Avery felt a surge of anger. "I'm not like him, Mom. I'm not an addict."
Nilani sighed. "I know that, Avery. But you're still seeing him, still keeping in touch with him. What if he pulls you in?"
Avery shook her head. "He won't, Mom. I promise."
Nilani looked at her, her eyes searching. "I hope not, Avery. I really do."
The conversation between Avery and Nilani continued, with Avery trying to reassure her mom that she was okay, that she wasn't going to end up like her father.
"I know I shouldn't have gone behind your back, Mom. But I needed to see him. I needed to understand why he did what he did."
Nilani's expression softened. "I understand that, Avery. But next time, please come to me first. I want to support you, not hinder you."
Avery nodded, feeling a sense of relief. "I will, Mom. I promise."
Meanwhile, Asher walked into his house, feeling guilty about the Remi and Avery situation. He had always tried to stay out of their drama, but now he felt like he was stuck in the middle.
As he walked into the kitchen, his mom looked up from her phone. "Hey, sweetie. How was your day?"
Asher sighed and dropped his bag on the floor. "It was drama-filled, as usual."
His mom raised an eyebrow. "What happened now?"
Asher hesitated, unsure of how much to reveal. But then he decided to open up. "It's just Remi and Avery. They're at each other's throats again."
His mom's expression turned concerned. "What's going on between them?"
Asher filled her in on the details, from the s*x tape to the Insider's latest scoop.
His mom listened, her eyes widening in surprise. "Wow, that's quite a mess."
Asher nodded. "I know, right? I feel like I'm stuck in the middle."
His mom put a hand on his shoulder. "You can't control what they do, Asher. But you can control how you react."
Asher nodded, feeling a sense of relief. "You're right, Mom. I just need to stay out of it and let them work it out themselves."
His mom smiled. "That's my wise son."
Asher smiled back, feeling a sense of hope. Maybe, just maybe, Remi and Avery would work things out and the drama would die down.
But as he walked upstairs to his room, he couldn't shake the feeling that this was far from over.
