Ch 1:Why Did It Have To Be Him?

Sapphire's POV:
Today marks my first day as the Royal Guard for the Crown Prince of the Lycan Kingdom. But troubled by my deep-rooted fear and anxiety, I couldn’t get a wink of sleep last night.
I dressed myself in the provided uniform for the newly joined Royal Guards with meticulous care, but my fingers repeatedly smoothed out its wrinkles. I couldn’t help but blankly stare at the indentations left by my chest corset belt, which I wore beneath the shirt to bind my breasts.
After I had covered my hair with a black turban, a long sigh escaped from me when I realized how closely my face resembled that of my twin brother Alex. We shared a similar face and almost the same height and body stature, so filling in his identity here felt like the only option viable to me.
I was certain no one would be able to recognize my true identity here, but still, I took a few deep breaths to calm myself down.
It was hard to admit to myself that I was bound to live with this harrowing fear of my disguise being exposed every day inside this palace until I achieve my goal.
But who knew the greatest plot twist, which would completely turn my life upside down, was awaiting me today?

At the dawn break, I reached the large sparring ground to have my first formal meeting with my Master, the mighty Crown Prince of the Lycan Kingdom, for our very first spar to happen against each other.
I have always admired Prince Leonard for a very long time, as I can recall. Since the very beginning, I was determined to become his Royal Guard and serve him, vowing my utmost loyalty. But also, I wanted to earn his goodwill as fast as I could, so that it might aid me to survive a little easier inside the palace.
There were approximately 14 royal guards lined up surrounding Prince Leonard, who stood tallest and the most dazzling among all!
He wasn’t decked up in his jewel-embroidered silk robes like yesterday, but in a very simple attire like any ordinary swordsman.
But his gorgeous handsome face radiating that tender smile under the warm morning sun didn’t fail to skip a beat of my heart, as I couldn’t avert my eyes off him all the way until I reached close.
“Oh, you came?” Prince Leonard greeted me first cordially, as I bowed my head down, getting my senses back after I had been momentarily absorbed in his beauty.
He instructed all the guards to step behind him, and lifted up his sword before commanding me, “Alex Wathen, since this is your very first day in the palace, I am looking forward to see more of your combat skills. I will test your skills myself with our first sparring session today.”
“Y-Yes, Your Highness.”
Diligently following his words, I grabbed out my sword as well and aimed it higher when he first permitted me to strike at him, using my full strength.
I inhaled a deep breath and followed his command without any hesitation. Keeping a calm demeanor outside, I remembered all the battling techniques my brother Alex had taught me.
Being renowned as the greatest lycan warrior of the kingdom, Prince Leonard, I knew he wouldn’t be an easy opponent for me. While I had to face him head on in the body of an omega I was born with, I didn’t intend on losing without giving it my all!
With the speed of flash, I ran towards him and struck at his sword without a second delay, but to my surprise, he didn’t even flinch. No matter how many times I striked at him repeatedly he didn’t tense at all and dodged each of them neatly, which was starting to hurt my pride as a warrior.
When I paused for a second to breathe a little easier, Prince Leonard aimed to strike me with his quick speed, as if all this time was only waiting for me to slow down a bit.
But in a rush, I lost the momentum, and before I could block his strike, my feet slipped making me almost stumble to fall!
Fearing I might fall with a bad hit, Prince Leonard didn’t waste a second and ran towards me to help.
But instead of reaching for my hand, his arm mistakenly touched my right breast!
Even though I had carefully hidden my breasts under the chest binder, the second he touched me, a gush of emotions ran wild inside me, making my heart erratically beat faster as if it would jump out any second!
My ears started ringing, and almost immediately, I could smell a soothing, elusive, but deadly attractive scent emitting from Prince Leonard.
But why?
I had never sensed such a strong, enchanting scent in a man before, no matter what kind of strong Alpha trait they belonged to. But before I could figure out what was happening, all of a sudden, a knot twisted inside my chest, as I sensed my omega wolf, Alina, howling frantically aloud inside me!
~ “Mate! He’s our fated mate, Sapphire!”
What?
For the 18 years of my life, I had always deliberately hoped to meet my fated Alpha one day in a dreamy encounter. But no matter how many Alphas hovered around me, my wolf never showed any interest towards them, nor could she ever recognize this strong mate bond pull with another Alpha.
But now, when I am stuck in this do-or-die situation to find my brother, why do I have to find my fated Alpha here?
The next second, unknowingly, I shoved his arm away from me a little violently, as if I was still unable to process the terrible reality before my eyes!
~ “Sapphire…Our long wait has finally come to an end! I can finally smell my mate from him! Prince Leonard…he is our destined mate, Sapphire! He’s our mate!!”
Alina’s loud growl froze me for a second as my ocean eyes rolled in disbelief. Among all the werewolf territories under the lycan kingdom, I could bet my life that Prince Leonard was the most desired ideal Alpha any young maiden could ever dream of having, including me.
Not only because he was the Crown Prince, but his kind heart and gentlemanly nature make him stand out proudly among all the royals.
A chill of excitement ran down my spine the second I realized the dreamy man I had deeply admired all my life had turned out to be my destined mate.
But the next second, when the reality finally hit my senses, my body appalled in fear, making my breath hitch from shock.
I know the second I recognize this mate bond with him, it will be all over for me, as well as our pack! My heart twisted in agony when I realized here, I don’t have a choice to be selfish when I know I would be putting thousands of innocent lives in the brink of danger!
How could my destiny write such a cruel fate for me? And among all the men existing in this territory, why did it have to be him?

I know, you all might wonder, amidst of chaos of accidentally discovering my fated mate, why did I make such a dangerous choice of sneaking in here while disguised as a man in the first place?
