Chapter Eleven: Girl Talk and Giggles!

BECCA It feels overwhelming to hold his hand. I force myself to think about other things whenever my imagination runs wild. Nathan brings me back to reality when he lets go of my hand. I blink, and disappointment flushes inside me. Nathan enters his room and raises his eyebrows at me. I frown. "Aren't you coming inside?" he asks. Oh. Flustered, I nod and enter, watching him collapse on a bean bag. "Be comfortable." Nathan looks at me through his long, beautiful eyelashes. Shyly, I nod and then look around as I take in my surroundings. I would have imagined his room to be a typical messy teenage boy's room, but it is neatly furnished and immaculately tidy. I sit next to the coffee table and adjust my bag on my lap. It takes me a moment to calm my nerves and adapt to the space when I look up and find Nathan staring at me, sending chills down my spine. I blush and cough up, "What are you looking at?" Bashful, I tuck a strand behind my ear. "You tell me." Excuse me? I frown at Nathan. I murmur, "How would I know why you always look at me? I am not someone who can read minds." Nathan leans forward with a look that makes me wonder what he is thinking. His eyes are a much darker shade of brown than I usually see. "Neither am I," he mumbles. I raise my eyebrows. "What?" Nathan leans back, shrugs, "Nothing..." and then clicks his tongue. "How about we start talking about the project, huh?" I frown. I believe I did hear Nathan say something. No! I shake my head. I must have misheard him. I pull out a notebook and shuffle my hand in my bag to look for a pen. "We should start..." Nathan leans in and waves a pen in the air. "Do you want this?" he asks. Confused, I stare at him and then mumble, "Uh, sure!" before I take the pen. My hands feel clammed up. Then, with a deep breath, I scribble and go on and on about the project. Nathan listens with his hands resting on his sides. I feel flustered under his intense gaze. "Uh, what do you say?" I ask. "Huh?" Nathan blinks at me. I roll my eyes and say, "I want to know your opinion about the thing I have been..." I glance at my wristwatch and huff back at him, "... speaking about for fifteen minutes now." Nathan blurts out, "Oh!" That's when someone calls me, "Becky?" Nathan and I blink and frown at each other before I turn my head, only to land my eyes on a familiar brunette. Dakota raises her eyebrows and looks back and forth between Nathan and me. Surprised, I get off my seat. "Oh, it's you..." I say. Dakota nods and beams at me. "Yeah! I just met Skylar. She told me you are here." I sense Nathan's gaze when I wave and grin as I step toward her. "Oh, we were just discussing the media art project, that's all." Dakota tilts her head and huffs exasperatingly, "Oh, no! You two...why would you talk about schoolwork outside of school? It's so boring." I shrug. "I have a habit of finishing and submitting work before the deadline. I hate to procrastinate." Dakota mocks me with her wide grin and calls me out of the room. She then links her arm with mine. "Well, you won't be doing work right now." What? I blink at her. "Since I am here..." She then looks over at Nathan. "Don't mind me stealing Becky from you, okay?" "Just go!" Nathan snaps. Dakota winks when I glance back at him. Nathan straightens up on the beanbag and growls with his narrowed eyes glaring at us. So, why does he growl every time I see him? Dakota snorts and then says, "Let's go, Becky. I bought so many snacks from the grocery store. We will devour them and gossip about everything." She tugs my arm and drags me out of the room. I can't help but look over my shoulder at him. But not for long when she tugs again and murmurs, "Don't mind, Nathan. He is stubborn, arrogant, and moody." We enter an identical bedroom but decorated half in a very sporty style and another half in a girlish manner. Dakota forces me to sit on her bed and brings out a bag overflowing with snacks. She sits down facing me and snorts. "Nathan can be joyful one moment but turns all dark and gloomy the next. He can be tough to understand." She clicks her tongue. "But then it isn't impossible." She offers me a Kit-Kat bar. I shyly nod and gracefully accept the bar before I glance to the sporty side of the room. "Who sleeps there?" I ask curiously. Dakota looks over at the other bed when the door opens, and someone barges in. "Speak of the devil!" Dakota murmurs to me and then gets up, grinning. "Oh, Devin, how do you do?" "DAKOTA! SPEAK FOR YOURSELF! WHERE THE HECK DID YOU PUT MY BASKETBALL? IT IS MY TURN TO... oh, hi!" the intruder slows down when she notices me. Dakota throws an arm around Devin and looks at me, "Becky, this is my sister, Devin. As you must have noticed, the devil is in the name..." "Adopted...and SHUT UP!" Devin narrows her eyes and snaps, pushing her sister away. Devin then turns to me and almost bows, "Luna, it's been a pl..." but Dakota slaps her sister's mouth. Luna? I frown. Devin groans in pain. "WHAT THE f**k!" "Ooo, should I tell mommy and daddy that their sweet, innocent daughter is swearing and yelling at her big sister?" Dakota teases. "You wouldn't," Devin grits and then scoffs, "Just give me my basketball..." "Hope you are not hanging out with those stoner dudes from the alley!" Dakota murmurs. "Firstly, who are you to decide who I should hang with? I am a sophomore now, not an elementary school kid. Secondly, I am teaching a couple of kids from the pack..." Pack? That's when Dakota interrupts Devin with a cough. Dakota awkwardly chuckles, "Did you ask Ethan? I was here when he took your ball. I guess the boys are playing basketball today." Distracted, Devin groans, "Ugh, not today..." With one last glance and smile at me, Devin rushes out, but only after snatching a packet of M&Ms from Dakota. "Hey! That's mine!" Dakota calls out glaringly. Dakota then glances at me and grits, "Sorry, but now you see what a devil Devin is." She groans, "I feel so embarrassed right now." "No need to be. Siblings fight and argue. We get on each other's nerves, but we are very protective of each other and love each other like crazy, though we won't admit it openly." I respond understandingly. "Woah, seems you speak with experience. Tell me, you have a sibling, too, right? Are they as annoying as mine? Please tell me and share my woes," Dakota pleads jokingly. I smile. "I have a younger sister, and she is seven now." "Wow, she must be so cute! I wish to have a baby sister than that devil!" Dakota whines and pouts. I chuckle and then nod. "Aria is cute." "Oh, that's her name?" Dakota asks. I nod. "Yeah." "It's beautiful." Dakota grins and then scoffs, "So, Aria doesn't get on your nerves?" I shrug, "Aria is an angel and too good for this world." Dakota fusses, "Seriously, what happened to Devin, that devil!" I shrug, "Devin grew up." "Ha, I know!" Dakota snorts and takes a bite of her chocolate. The two of us look at each other and laugh together. We later decide to watch a movie when Dakota murmurs, "You know, I can tell we are going to be close friends." "Really?" I raise my eyebrows. Dakota enthusiastically nods. We smile and then turn to look back at the screen. It's the first time I've felt this way about someone.
