At 3 p.m., I sat in the coffee shop beneath Bennett Corporation, leisurely sipping a latte.
Through the floor-to-ceiling windows, I had a clear view of the building's revolving doors.
In the novel, Adrian complained that I dressed too conservatively and embarrassed him in public.
Now that Chloe had replaced me, I wanted to see whether her sexier style could win him this contract.
At 3:30, Adrian and Chloe appeared right on time.
Chloe wore a crop top with ripped jeans, chewing gum as she swaggered toward the entrance.
Adrian frowned, but he did nothing to stop her.
To him, it was probably part of her singular charm—her fearless refusal to bow to convention.
Once they entered the building, I checked the time.
Less than 15 minutes later, the revolving doors burst open.
Chloe stormed out first, cursing under her breath.
"What a fossil! If he's so obsessed with stupid rules, does he even want to do business?"
Adrian followed, his face livid.
"Chloe, you were too impulsive. Mr. Bennett is your senior. You shouldn't have thrown coffee over his documents."
"Was I impulsive?" She jerked her arm out of his grasp.
"He looked at me like I was trash! What the hell does he care what I wear?" She gave a cold laugh. "Adrian, if you think I embarrassed you, fire me right now!"
Adrian took a deep breath.
"I didn't say I was firing you. But this project matters to the company. You have to apologize."
"No! If anyone apologizes, it'll be you. I don't bow my head to anyone!"
I nearly laughed aloud from my seat in the coffee shop.
This was the brilliant judgment of the novel's male lead.
He was sacrificing a core company project for an i***t like her.
I put away my phone, paid my bill, and left.
The moment I stepped outside, I ran right into them.
Adrian stared. "What are you doing here?"
Then something seemed to click, and his brow furrowed.
"Did you come to laugh at me?"
"Don't flatter yourself." I shrugged. "I happened to be passing by.
"Though from the look of things, Ms. Lane's charming honesty isn't quite as useful as advertised."
Chloe was already furious. The sight of me gave her a convenient target.
"Enough with the snide comments, Evelyn!" She pointed a finger at my face. "If you hadn't dumped this mess on me on purpose, I wouldn't have had to put up with any of this!"
I knocked her hand aside.
"Chloe, a brain is a wonderful thing. It's a shame you don't have one.
"You ruined the company's deal with your bad manners, and now you're blaming me? Do you think the business world is your living room, where everyone has to indulge your rotten temper?"
She had no answer. Her face turned bright red.
She turned to Adrian with an aggrieved cry. "Mr. Shaw, look at her!"
A complicated emotion flickered in Adrian's eyes as he looked at me.
"That's enough, Evelyn." He lowered his voice, trying to reclaim his authority. "Chloe was wrong, but you're responsible too. The project wouldn't have gone wrong if you hadn't suddenly resigned."
His logic was so absurd I almost laughed from sheer rage.
"Adrian, is your brain stem missing?
"I've already resigned. You two botched the project, and you still expect your soon-to-be ex-wife to take the blame?
"Since you're so determined to protect her, why not put the whole company in her name and let her destroy whatever she wants?"
Adrian flushed, then went pale.
"When did you become so vicious?"
"Vicious?" I laughed coldly. "You can't take a few honest words? Then what would you call the way you abused and hurt me for 3 years?"
"You—"
Before he could finish, my phone rang.
Attorney Wilson sent me a message.
Attorney Wilson: The divorce agreement has been delivered to Mr. Shaw's office.
I held up my phone.
"The agreement is waiting for you. Sign it."
Then I turned and walked away.
Behind me, Chloe shouted in protest while Adrian fought to contain his anger.
I never looked back.
Adrian Shaw, this was only the first step toward the ruin awaiting both of you.
In the original novel, I had been tricked into paying off your loan-shark debt, only to be thrown out with nothing.
This time, I would watch you fall into the abyss with my own eyes.
