THREE-INSOMNIA

1107 Words
NORTH "Have you heard anything from him yet?" Katlin dragged a palm down her tear stained face as she paced the length of the study impatiently. "No, not yet." I replied, shifting through the mountain of papers that seemed to have accumulated on my desk in a matter of days, "He could've gotten caught up in the fallout and had to lay low for a while." "- Or he could be dead." She snapped, glaring at me with eyes that were tired and bloodshot after days of insomnia. I growled at the pale faced woman, "We don't know that." The low note in my tone was enough to warn her to tread carefully. She may have been my brothers mate, but that didn't mean I wouldn't reprimand her if she raised her voice at me.  And though she may have been right, he may very well have been dead, I was still holding out hope that in all the commotion and no doubt chaos that would follow the death of a 'King' he had gotten stuck amongst the pack and was merely hiding out some place safe, just waiting for an opening to escape. "He should've been back days ago!" She cried, her tears shining against her white face that seemed to have grown increasingly gaunt in the days since Orian's departure. Looking almost skeletal under the bright office light. I waved her worries off with a dismissive hand as I shuffled my papers, "I've already sent an informant to find him, she should be there any day now." "She!" Katlin hissed incredulously, throwing her hands dramatically in the air. "You've sent a woman!" My eyes narrowed at the woman, "Is that an issue?" "Who is it? Who have you sent?" Her words came in rapid succession, as she deliberately listed all the women she knew I had slept with. "Was it Dalia? Lilia? Kaja? What about Jasmine? Or was it-" "-I sent Scarlett." She paused her pacing instantly to stare at me in shock with her blue eyes that were hauntingly pale, her voice lowering an octave. "You did what?.." "She's the only person I trust enough to get the job done properly." I deadpanned.  I knew Katlin and Scarlett had never exactly been the best of friends, especially after the overly jealous Katlin had found out that Orian and Scarlett had once had a fling, though it had only lasted a couple of months and was weeks before they even met, it didn't stop Katlin from not so secretly loathing Scarlett, along with any other female Orian had ever laid eyes upon.  I still didn't quite see the issue, it's not like he had slept with her since they were together, yet the vapid b***h still held Scarlett in a negative regard. "You sent one of your w***e halfwits to bring back my mate!" She breathed, a fresh flood falling from her face as she clenched her fists until crimson tears fell from her palms. "How f*****g dare you!" The little resolve I had been holding onto out of respect for my brother broke, it snapped and so did I, turning on the woman whose watery blue eyes' only purpose seemed to be to weep more tears than the ocean had salt.  "Katlin watch your tongue." I hissed, "Or I'll have it ripped from your thick skull." She glared back at me with eyes glazen with a burning rage, like a beaten dog that wished nothing more than to tear at its masters throat. Though she wasn't exactly wrong, I was sleeping with the girl, but that was completely irrelevant. It was not the reason I had sent her after Orian.  Scarlett was not only beautiful, with distinctive features, not necessarily conventionally attractive, instead the kind of strange and unique beauty that was far more entrancing.  -But she was also one of the most cunning and able bodied individuals I knew of for her size.  She was small enough to be seen as meek and unassuming, yet strong enough to do what needed to be done. I had seen the tiny female take down fully grown men. I could've sent a soldier after my brother, but I highly doubted they would even make it past the patrols before being slaughtered.  Scarlett however, would play the part of a female separated from her pack after a rogue attack, lone and afraid, with the aim of persuading them to lower their defences and allowing her to infiltrate the pack, where from the inside of the lions den she would inform me wether or not Orian was even still drawing breath, and if he was.. We would have to try and think of a way to get him out alive. Somehow.  Hopefully. It was either that or go to war. An option I would usually be all for however very little was known about this pack and their Alpha. For as long as I could remember they had been relatively small and kept to themselves, until just a few years ago. Their Alpha had been slain by a younger, stronger, and some may say more deserving Alpha. Who gained totalitarian control over the pack, raising it from the ground up to create his own 'kingdom,' where he would rein king. If it came to war I would be prepared, Scarlett would let us know if they were any real threat to our armys of trained men. She could tell us more about the size of their lands, the layout, their population and most of all their Alpha. Katlin held her palms over her eyes, as if wishing this was all just a bad dream and she would wake up any minute and be beside Orian once more. "If anything happens to him..." She inhaled a deep agonal breath as her mask of cold, hard rage shattered to reveal the weakness within as more tears dampened her flushed cheeks and a deep sob rattled her body, "If anything happens to him, I swear on all things holy-." "Do it." I spat, standing to my feet as the baritone sound echoed from somewhere deep within my chest. "Threaten me again. See what happens.. I dare you." She pursed her lips, knowing that I made no empty threats. "I'm sorry, it's just.." She stared down at her feet submissively with a deep sigh. "I'm on edge, what with Orian gone and the thought of him and Scarlett alone together... My beast is driving my crazy." "Well then control it." I hissed. "Before it controls you." *** QOTD-Do you have any pets? Any thoughts? Theories? Don't forget to vote and comment! -TFOA
