Episode:4: Stepping stone

My dad left to see his friend outside. A few minutes later, he returned to the dining room. Both of my parents gave me a warm, searching look. “Sweetie,” my dad called out gently. “What do you have to say about the job offer?” I looked at him, my eyes welling up. “Dad, I don't know what to say. This is a nanny job.” “No, dear,” they both countered quickly. “It’s a home assistant.” “What is the difference between the two?” I asked, my voice trembling. Mum leaned in. “My darling, just give it a trial, okay?” At that exact moment, a sharp pain shot through my head, as if that wooden spoon from earlier had just hit me ten times harder than before. “Mum!!” I cried out. I stood up abruptly and rushed back to my room, locking the door behind me. Tears rolled freely down my cheeks. How can I do nanny work? I thought bitterly. Yes, the pay is incredibly high, but what about my career? What will I tell my friends? All these agonizing questions looped through my mind. A few moments later, my mum entered the room. She sat beside me and pulled me close. “Don’t cry, my darling. You know I only want the best for you. Take this work as a stepping stone. You won’t regret it.” I looked at her, seeing the genuine love in her eyes, and threw my arms around her. My dad walked in a second later, joining the embrace. They held me tight, shielding me from my own doubts. After cheering me up and wiping away my tears, they brought out the Ludo board. We sat on my floor playing game after game until 8:30 PM, laughing and talking until it was time for bed. After exchanging warm goodnight wishes and kisses, they left for their room, leaving me with a lighter heart and a completely new path ahead of me.
