Chapter four

1108 Words
ELSIE’S POV The car comes to a stop a few feet away from me. The contents of the box in my hand earlier lay scattered on the floor. I can feel my temper rising. Before I can think it through, I jump to my feet, leaving everything on the floor and storm towards the car. “Are you trying to kill somebody?!” I snap as soon as I reach the car. The glass is tinted so I can't even see the driver. That doesn't deter me. I knock on the glass. “Excuse me?” I say. The driver rolls down the glass. It's a young man. I scoff. Of course. “Hello?” I repeat. “Are you trying to murder someone?” The driver turns to look at me and my breath catches in my throat, stunning me to silence for a few seconds. Green eyes. His eyes are the brightest shade of green I have ever seen. They seem to shine in the dim light, like they can look right through you. I feel myself transported into a memory I don't even remember exists in my head. A memory with these exact green eyes. And then the spell is broken. “How may I help you?” He asks nonchalantly. I can feel my blood rush to my head. The nerve of this man. “What do you mean, how may you help me?” I shoot him my most scary glare. “You nearly killed me!” I snap. “Ohhh,” he says, like he wasn't there. My eyes narrow. He looks me over for injuries and then he smirks. “I don't see a scratch though. But you have my attention now if that's what you wanted.” “Are you crazy? You literally threw me off the road.” He looks around. “But let's be frank, you obviously were not paying attention to where you were going, else you would have seen me earlier and avoided this whole situation.” “And you are driving where people are supposed to walk,” I retort, matching his tone. He manages to look like he's enjoying this. “There's hardly anything we can do about it now, is there?” He says like he's trying to taunt me. “You know what? Screw you.” “Okay okay, I'm sorry.” He says but I'm already walking away. Judging from the car and the expensive suit he's wearing, he is obviously one of those spoiled, good looking nepo babies who thinks the world belongs to them. I spot my car and angrily grab my stuff from the floor. “Do you need a hand?” He yells, popping his head outside the window. I flip him the middle finger and head to my car. Jerk. I start the car and drive out of the parking lot. But even as I drive away, I can still see those piercing green eyes in my mind's eye. I shake my head. What's wrong with me? I spend the next week looking for another. “How hard can it be to find one single job for goodness sake.” I groan into my palm after reading yet another email reply for a job application I sent. “We're sorry, the position is not open anymore. We'll be sure to reach out as soon as there's an opening” “It's the same reply every single time. It's just one job.” I complain. My closest friend looks at me in sympathy as she places a huge mug I'm front of me. I inhale the aroma, Iced Mocha with whipped cream and a pump of hazelnut and I can feel myself calming down. I moan dramatically as I take a sip, it's exactly how I like it. “Paige, you are the best!” She laughs as she takes a seat beside me, her own cup of iced coffee in front of her. She owns and runs this cute café by herself. Her only employee is a handsome baker whom she swears she doesn't have a crush on but she is always flushed whenever they stare at each other for too long. Which brings the question of why are they staring at each other in the first place? It's just after lunch hours so the place is practically empty. We are seated at one of the tables, job-hunting. Liam is in the kitchen, learning how to bake a brownie. “You know you can always come and work with me and then we can run the cafe together.” Paige says again. “At this point, I think I'm going to start considering your–,” My phone buzzes, cutting me off. I glance at it. It's an email notification. I open it, not expecting much. And then I jump to my feet. We are pleased to inform you that you have been selected for the position of Personal Assistant to the Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Alexander Brown, effective immediately.” My mouth falls open. “Oh my gosh!” I whisper. “What is it?” Paige looks worried but I squeal in excitement. “I got a job.” Her eyes widen and she envelopes me in a hug. “Yessss.” Just then my phone rings. It's Zara. “Elsieeee,” She yells as soon as I pick. What on earth? I grimace, removing the phone from my ear. “Hi, Zara,” My tone is the exact opposite of hers. “Have you seen the email?” She asks excitedly. “Yeah, but wait a minute. How did you even know this?” She laughs, “It’s a secret.” I can imagine her winking. “Anyways, I gotta run. Congrats. You are going to take the job, yeah?” I stutter, “Uhh…,” She doesn't wait for me to answer. “See you at work tomorrow, bye.” And the call goes off. I put the phone down gently, my smile growing. I do a little happy dance. “See, I told you, you'd be alright.” Paige says, her smile matching mine. “But how did you get the job back,” she asks when we are calm. “Actually, I have no idea.” I showed her the letter. “Okay that’s strange. But a job is a job right.” “Yeah.” Something doesn't add up. I don't understand why I'm going to be the personal assistant of this new CEO but I can feel my worries ease now that I have a job again.
