Rock Bottom

Alex looked away, “You slapped her first.” Vera scoffed. “That’s all you have to say? Since clearly I'm being regarded as insignificant and manipulative by your so-claimed partner here, and I'm being considered as an intruder in my own house..." "Vera, I'm really sorry..." "I'm not done speaking, Alex," her tone became even colder. "I'm taking back the property. You shall be evicted from this premises by morning. My agents will be here tomorrow to take back all the documentation for this house, and you shall do as they say, then hand over the keys. Now, speak." "Vera, please... I'm really sorry about all of this," "Alright. I shall take my leave now, ta-ta," Vera said as she moved graciously to the door. Victoria threw a stare at her, which she returned with a smirk before she exited the room. "Ah, that b***h!" Victoria shouted. She couldn't hold back the burst of rage that boiled in her. She slammed a flower vase on the tiles, yelling like a warrior princess. "Babe, calm down," Alex said, trying to hug her. "Don't you dare touch me right now!" "Let's go," Vera said to the guard as she walked out of the main door in a very composed manner. He nodded and escorted her to the car. Immediately, the guard stepped in and secured his seatbelt, the driver steered the car back onto the asphalt road and drove off. ************************************************ "I can't believe Vicky said that to you," Daniella said to Vera as she took a sip of a red fuzzy liquid from a glass. "Well, I can believe it. I thought she was really my friend, but finally got to see who she really was, what she had been hiding inside... b***h," Vera said, her voice sounding bitter as she spat out the last word. She stared out of the window and back at the lady in front of her, "I wonder how Alex even falls for such a person." "Ha ha! Speaking of Alex, if you really liked him that much... why didn't you just tell him before?" "See, Daniella, when you're someone like me, you can't really trust anyone to the core. Alex Stefan is a good friend, no doubt." "He has done a lot for me since the Fashion Academy years, but being in a relationship requires trust and real love. Alex never seemed like the one for me," Vera said, then took a last sip of the red fluid. She turned to the counter at the far end of the spacious bar and gestured at the man behind the counter with two fingers. "Aren't you taking too much of a punch, Vera?" Vera smiled, "Is it too much? I just feel like it," "I guess it's a good substitute for alcohol, isn't it?" Daniella said with a smirk. "I'm not hurting that much, that's just it," Vera said, but her expression turned sour indicating she lied. “Don’t do that, Vera. I am not Vicky. You, as well as your secrets, are safe with me.” Daniella said, trying to comfort her. Vera smiled. “I know and it hurts badly.” The waiter arrived with a glass pitcher full of the red fluid. He poured it gracefully into their glasses and left the remainder in between them before he walked away. "But... if you never thought of Alex as the one, why did you react that way? Why did you do all those things for him?" "Alex is a fine man, and he has helped me a lot, hence I did all that I had done for him. I didn't want to rush in, I still felt we weren't ready for all that." "Then, the witch of the house calls on Monday evening, demanding as usual and complaining about figures that only I should be concerned about. Eventually, she demands a marriage with a suitor out of the blue. The only man that came to mind was Alex, I know nothing about that noble suitor she spoke of." "Oh, dear. I now know what it feels like to have seen your only possible chance being taken away just like that," "I know..." a line of tears rolled down Vera's cheek, "I can't just understand..." Vera's voice broke into a soft cry. "Vera. Stop crying." Daniella touched her hand which she had extended to the glass, "Would you like to get away from it all? I know of a beautiful opportunity for that," she said. Vera raised an eyebrow, "Where?" she asked. She snatched her hand from beneath Daniella's palm. "Grand River. A cruise ship party is going to take place there," Daniella said with a lot of excitement in her voice. "Hmm..." " Vera, I'm sure you'll love it. It is going to be explosive, and it's on the river. That refreshing sea air and the splash of the waters together with the pictures of nature would connect some healing. I'd go if I could buy the tickets — it's worth about a hundred grand!" Vera lifted her head, she knew parties like that. Parties, where big names are gathered, restricted access, and a lot of money, are always put in it to make one of the best, a billionaire party. She looked out of the window again and back at Daniella. Her lips readied to speak, but a loud ring cut her short. She turned to her purse, unzipped it, and slid out her phone. The number was an office number, one she could recognize well — her office's number. "Miss Vera, I'd love to speak to you as soon as possible," a masculine voice said as the lines got connected. "What is the matter?" Vera replied. "I'd rather tell you off the phone." The phone beeped as the call got disconnected. Vera dropped the phone on their table. "So you said you wanted to see me? What seems to be the problem?" Vera asked a man who sat opposite her. The man's hair was shaved, and he had a line of beards around his jawline and a French-style mustache.
