THE WEIGHT OF SECRETS Filters of morning sunlight poured through the thick green curtain surrounding Moonshadow, casting a dappled pattern on the town village below. This was a crisp, clear day - the kind that after any night of the week could bring a feeling of renewal. But for Lyla, the sun's warmth did nothing to expel the icy hand that had settled in her chest since Ryder's visit last night. She hadn't been able to sleep, instead pacing the tired creaking floorboards of her little house all night long with the words Ryder had spoken ringing in her head. The threat itself was one thing, but to talk about Adora was pushing her thoughts off into dark and unfamiliar territory—the darkest corners of which she had no notion about Samuel's past, and now she had to wonder what secrets he might be hiding from her. What was Adora doing connected with Samuel's affairs? And why had Ryder brought it up? Shaking her head, Lyla tried to push the questions aside. She had to focus, to figure out what she was going to do now. The stakes were higher than ever, and the threat Ryder posed was very real. She had to protect Samuel, but how could she do that if she didn't know what she was up against? Leaving the cottage, she made her way to the edge of town. The forest loomed like a dark and impenetrable wall before her eyes. The path she walked was one she knew well, a winding trail that led to a secluded spot by the river. A place where she and Samuel often met in private. Their sanctuary, where they could forget all about the world and simply be together. As she walked, memories of their time together flooded her mind. At once sweet and bitter. tinged with the fear of what was to come. She could still see Samuel's smile hear his deep reassuring voice taste the warmth of his embrace. But now those memories are tainted. By the uncertainty that had crept into her heart and now inhabited every corner. When she arrived at the river, Samuel was already there. His back was turned towards her, and the rush of water. His dark hair, which had once been a rich black shade, now gleamed white in the sun — a sign of his true nature as alpha. His broad shoulders had a stiffness Lyla could feel from where she stood; he bore a heavy burden upon them. She paused, watching him for a minute. Her heart ached with love and fear. He was so strong and such a fighter, yet she knew the strain their relationship must be putting him under. Both of them were in a dangerous position, and every step they took brought them closer to the edge. “Samuel,” she called softly, moving forward. At the sound of her voice, he turned to look. When he saw her, his expression softened. 'Lyla," he said warmly and with a low voice. "I was expecting you to come. She stepped up to him, and he nestled her in his arms. For that moment she allowed herself to lean back in the lap of the moment, comforted by his presence. Yet fear and doubt nibbled within her, refusing to be stilled. "We have to talk," she said, pulling back slightly to look up at him. Samuel’s forehead furrowed in worry, a look of concern flickering in the depths of his dark brown eyes. "What is it?" he asked with a note of concern in his voice. For a moment Lyla hesitated, uncertain where to start. She did not want to lay her fears on him, but neither could she keep this from him any longer. She finally spoke, watching his reactions slowly "Ryder came to see me last night." Samuel's face turned cold instantly, and he ground his teeth. “What did he his for? "Cast the low, menacing voice of him. She sucked in a deep breath of air, summoning her spirit. "He knows about us, Samuel. He's threatened to go to the pack if I don't go with him." The growl reverberated in Samuel’s throat, and he tightened his grip on her. “He can’t touch you love, I won’t let him.” “I know you will protect me,” Lyla said. She placed a hand on his chest and felt the steady beat of his heart beneath his palm. “But that isn’t all, Samuel. He mentioned someone. Who is she?” The name hung between them like an apparition, and Samuel had a strong response to it. Though he quickly concealed whatever emotion flickered across his face, he stiffened and his eyes narrowed a little. “Adora?” Samuel said the casual tone. I haven’t heard that name in a long time, a mutual friend. You have nothing to worry about her. She couldn't shake the feeling that there was something Samuel wasn't telling her, reminding Lyla with a frown. Although Samuel was a man of few words about his past, she felt that he was hiding something. "'Mutual friend?' Why would Ryder bring her up?" Samuel sighed and moved a strand of fiery red hair from her face. “Ryder likes to cause you problems where there aren’t any, particularly lately. Adora is insignificant, Lyla. This is all in the past Please don't let him get inside your head.” Lyla wished to believe him. But the uncertainty lingered. Ryder had seemed so positive, so sure that bringing up Adora was going to shake her Samuel does have one good point, though. Ryder is addicted to chaos, and she can't let him drive a wedge between her and the man she loves. “OK,” Lyla said finally, the ache still gnawing at her heart. “But if there is anything l should know, you will tell me, won't you?" Samuel nodded. He held her close and stroked the taut muscles in her back, hoping the gentle motion would soothe her raw nerves. "If it has something to do with it-- But I mean 's not like that at all, "He reassured Lyla between hugs. His expression softened, Samuel kissed her forehead and nodded. "Of course. Lyla, I would never lie to you. you are the whole world to me." She smiled up at him and tried to brush doubt aside. “Not that, Samuel. All I want is for you and me to be safe. As long as we have a future together, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with the past.” “We will,” Samuel told her, holding her close again. “I’ll be sure of that." They stood there for a long time, the sound of the river rushing past them an ever-changing reminder of time's passage and destiny's call, of the decisions that had led them to this moment and those they would have to make. He spoke up again at last with determination filling his voice. “We’ll deal with Ryder alright. But we have to be careful. There’s more than just our lives at stake here.” Lyla nodded, knowing that he was right. They were playing a very dangerous game, one wrong step and it could cost them everything. But for now, all they could do was hold on to each other and face what came next together. After a while, Samuel pulled back slightly and looked to the sky where the sun was starting its descent. “I need to get back with the pack. Some things I've got to do. Lyla nodded, even though she wanted to hold onto him. “Be careful,” she said softly, brushing her fingers over his own as she backed up. “You too,” he said, his eyes lingering on hers. “And if Ryder does come back--” "I'll be fine," Lyla interrupted, trying to sound more confident than she felt. "I can handle him." Samuel hesitated, his protective instincts struggling against his faith in her. But at last, he nodded his head, leaning down to give her one last kiss. "I will be over later tonight," he promised. Lyla stood there until he was gone, feeling weighted by the secrets that they shared. As badly as she wanted to believe that everything was going to be all right, a part of her just couldn't shake the sense of unease lingering on the horizon--their troubles were only getting started.
