CHAPTER 8 — “What I Am Becoming”

572 Words
The world did not return to silence. It fractured. Something inside me broke open— not like glass… …but like a cage. I felt it rising. Not emotion. Not fear. Not even pain. Something older. Something that did not belong to the girl I thought I was. My breath came out uneven. Sharp. Burning. “Elias…” I whispered, though my voice no longer sounded like mine. It echoed. Layered. As though something else spoke beneath it. His grip tightened around me—not to restrain… but to anchor me. “Stay with me,” he said, urgency threading every syllable. “You have to fight it.” But I didn’t want to fight it. That was the terrifying part. Because for the first time in my life… I felt powerful. The ground beneath us trembled. A low, violent hum filled the air—as if reality itself rejected what I was becoming. The men stepped back. Not cautious. Not calculated. Afraid. “That’s impossible,” one of them muttered. “She hasn’t been awakened.” The man in front—the one who smiled too easily—watched me with something darker than fear. Recognition. “No,” he said slowly. “Not awakened…” A pause. A realization. “Remembering.” The word struck something deep within me. And suddenly I wasn’t here anymore. I was there. A different place. A different time. Flames devouring the sky. Bodies falling like forgotten prayers. And me— standing in the center of it all. Unharmed. Untouched. Unhuman. My eyes snapped open. And this time— I saw everything clearly. “Elias,” I said, standing on my own now. No weakness. No hesitation. “You knew.” It wasn’t a question. His silence confirmed it. Again. Always silence. “I was sent to stop what you could become,” he admitted. Each word heavy. Deliberate. Painful. “And now?” I asked. The wind howled around us, as if waiting for his answer. As if the world itself needed to know. His jaw tightened. His eyes softened. And for a moment— everything else disappeared. “Now…” he said quietly, “I don’t know if I want to.” The confession hung between us—fragile and dangerous. A mistake. “Unfortunate,” the man interrupted coldly. Before I could react He moved. Fast. Too fast. But I was faster. Time slowed. No I slowed it. His hand barely reached me before I caught his wrist mid-air. Effortlessly. The shock on his face… fed something inside me. “You should have left me in the dark,” I said, my voice calm too calm. And then I pushed. He flew backward, his body crashing violently into the ground as if gravity itself had turned against him. Silence followed. Heavy. Terrified. Elias stared at me. Not with fear. Not with confusion. With awe. And that terrified me more than anything. “What… are you?” one of the men whispered. I looked down at my hands. They trembled slightly— not from weakness… but from restraint. Because deep down… I already knew the answer. I lifted my gaze. Eyes steady. Soul shifting. Power rising. “I think…” I said slowly, feeling the truth settle into my bones “…I’m the beginning of something you were never meant to survive.” The air went still. And this time they all stepped back.
