CHAPTER 6 — “Danger Feels Like You”

369 Words
I stared at him. “You’re the one I needed protection from?” I asked, my voice low, almost breaking. Elias didn’t answer immediately. That scared me more than anything. “You don’t understand,” he finally said. “Then make me understand!” I snapped. For the first time… I saw it. Not control. Not mystery. Fear. “They were never supposed to find you,” he said. “Who is they?” I whispered. His eyes darkened. “The people I ran from.” A cold wave rushed through me. “You’re not just some random guy, are you?” He let out a quiet laugh—but there was no humor in it. “No… I’m the mistake they’ve been trying to erase.” Before I could respond— A loud sound echoed in the distance. A car door slammed. Then another. Elias grabbed my wrist. “Listen to me,” he said quickly, his voice sharp now. “If anything happens, you run. Don’t look back.” “What? No—” “RUN,” he repeated. Footsteps. Coming closer. Fast. My heart was racing now. “This isn’t funny anymore, Elias—” “I’m not joking.” His grip tightened slightly. Then… softened. “Meeting you…” he said quietly, “…was the only good thing I never planned.” My chest tightened. Everything in me wanted to stay. But something bigger… Something louder… Was screaming danger. “Too late,” a voice called out from the shadows. We both turned. Three figures stepped forward. Cold. Calm. Controlled. “Well, well…” one of them said. “There you are.” Elias stepped in front of me instantly. Protecting me. Like it was instinct. Like it mattered. “You shouldn’t have come back for her,” the man continued. Elias didn’t move. “Stay away from her.” The man smiled. “Oh… she’s exactly why we’re here.” My breath caught. “What do you mean?” I whispered. And then— The man looked directly at me. Not through me. At me. “Because,” he said slowly, “she’s not who she thinks she is either.” Everything went silent.
